Thanks for the explanation. I will have a deeper look at it. I managed CentOS for more than two years. I say Linux is a mess because no one knows where files should be found, what settings should change, etc. Take something as fundamental as...

There some distro made to be fileserver and others of the type to play nice with windows machine on the network, almost right out of the box. You can look at OMV (open media vault) or the truenas/freenas mentioned.

No, I am not into gaming so not a problem for me. Any issues with security since WIn7 does not receive any updates from microsoft?

This seems to be the right way but with some issues. Thanks

I should also mention that I have changed the name of the default workgroup in both PCs

Actually I have the opposite problem. I can see the user from the server but not the local account on the client PC I'll summarise the setup cause, coincidentally, I noticed something else just now. I have the server pc and the clients...

No, i do not have crazy needs. I am the only person accessing the files. I still have Win Server and I know all about permissions but in this case I can not make them work correctly. This is the problem I am facing...

Linux is a mess. You need to spend time learning how to configure it. BTW, would it work with WIndows 10 on a client PC? I haven't ever tried FreeBSD

Yes, now I have server 2022 but there is a mess with permissions and I can't figure out how to resolve it. BTW, the machine works very well with 2022 but the permission thing drives me nuts

No, you should use 2022 server, give the trial a shot. Drivers are the same as win 10,11 although sometimes you have to manually install them. Some win 7 drivers arnt even avalible.. The server os are very close to what windows should be without...

Hi, I am fed up with the rubbish on Win11 and (less) on Win10 especially with telemetry and broken windoes images. So, I am really considering installing Win 7 on a PC I use as a file server. I know Win 7 does not receive any security updated...

Hi, My setup has a PC that I use as a file server (running Windows Server 2022), a client PC (running Windows 10) and ZeroTier to create a private VPN. I have shared three drives on the server and mapped them onto the client using the IP that...

I wouldn't say it is a server machine in terms of specs. It is a mini PC (AMD, 16GB mem, 2TB SSD) that I use as a file server. I will do the system health check as you propose. It may help. SMART shows very good health on all drives. The PC is...
