Is there something to this whole Mouse Rage Syndrome (MRS) (http://www.hardocp.com/news.html?news=MjMxMjIsLCxobmV3cywsLDE=) or is it all just a bunch of hooey? Can your PC turn you into a raving mad lunatic with computer-cidal tendencies?

It's Mouse Rage Syndrome, and it infects all Internet users sooner or later, according to a study of 2,500 Web users that was released Tuesday. Conducted by the Social Issues Research Centre in the United Kingdom, the study identified key factors that can negatively affect cardio functions, as well as the immune and nervous systems.

I can attest that there's *something* happening.

I have a few users that I notice get very irritable when something on the internet doesn't go their way.

Yelling, screaming, abusing the mouse, etc. From time to time I find myself yelling across the floor "Hey, stop breaking my stuff!"

I had one person bust up an LCD monitor because they lost an ebay auction. They blamed it on the mouse not moving smooth enough, so they yanked it off the desk (which was plugged into a usb port on the monitor. LCD tipped and crashed, and cracked)

You know, I am just like everyone else and I get mad now and then at my computer etc. etc. etc. but never to the extent this article talks about. Seriously, h
In the last 90 days I have had:

Flood water ruin two high end PCs (both were editors rigs)
An Xbox 360 lost by the service center for over 40 days
20" LCD dies
Furnace goes out costing almost $5000 to replace...my offices had to be tore up to replace it...while I am working.
An Xbox 360 give me the red-rings of death during a Gears Of War review (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcavBG7OMWw)
A brand new Wii gets bricked by the auto update feature...still hasn't been replaced
Hard drive fail with all my...files...yeah...files on it

and...not once did I flip out and shoot my monitor, break my PC, scream and yell at my computer.

I'm not saying it isn't possible, I'm just saying that beyond the standard expletives you might mutter when one of these things happen, I Just don't see the whole Mouse Rage Syndrome thing.

Do you guys?

it makes you wonder if these people were like this to start with...you know, the road rage types.

Well I do get angry if I click the wrong thing or the if the internet screws up.

I get especially pissed if the mouse lags or skips.

Yeah, I've beat my mouse a couple of times. :)

Biggest thing for me is to mutter a "your momma!" to my computer, when it does something I don't like.

The only time I beat my mouse was when I went to grab it and there was a bug on it :D

I can sometimes get real pissed at my computer.
However, the most I ever do is move my mouse excessively fast across my desk while giving it all kinds of expletives.
I've learned a long time ago that violence and technology do not mix. :o

I get pretty pissed from time to time, but all I will do is slam my mouse down.. but not hard. I've never broken it, or even put an ware on it as far as I can tell.

People just need to step back, and turn on the porn to call them down :p

LOL! :p

I think more than road rage (which is directed at an individual that the ragee feels has "wronged" them), it's really a matter of anger management. Sure, we all get frustrated and upset at times, but I would never take it out by destroying things. I had a friend once who destroyed an heirloom tea set by throwing it against the wall. An irreplaceable legacy from grandma gone forever in a few moments because of a hissy fit. Plus, then she had to clean up the resulting mess.

I'll never forget when my husband declared his keyboard dead, so he ripped it apart and smashed it. Had to make a trip to Staples for an emergency replacement. Get home, plug it in, and it doesn't work either. Checked the cords (he was using an extension on the keepboard) and it had come loose. So he destroyed a perfectly good keyboard for nothing. :(

When RTCW first came out I cant tell you how fucking mad I got at the god damn medics that you put a clip into only to have them survive and pop you with a single bullet and you die. I have had my mouse since MS first came out with optical mice, it has taken a beating and still works flawlessly.

I have had a few moments where I was EXTREMELY tempted to beat the crap out of the computer. I'm lucky, as I have a big ancient CRT (totally indestructible) from a 1988 mac sitting on the floor. I occasionally kick the crap out it when I get too pissed.

Moving from free 3 meg service at college, back to 56k at home... (load... come on, load. Try again. Ok, load. Load!! LOAD YOU PIECE OF S**T!!!)

As far as actual content on the site, I've never really... gotten pissed because a website was ugly. So long as I can get whatever I want from it, I don't really care. If it's really atrocious I'll disable images and uncheck "allow pages to choose their own colors" which defaults things to black and white. It makes some of the really nasty ones more... acceptable.

IMO a slow loading website is similar to slow drivers , you get into a tempo when browsing and when a website gets hung while trying to load one of their shitty ads it gets just as frustrating . I've seen completely peaceful folk tense and clench up while trying to show me a webpage and the bloody thing is not loading or offline. Throwing a mouse at a monitor is hardly different from throwing a remote and I am certainly guilty of that.

If I enter a site that can't load within around twenty seconds "doing a thousand count" I move on to the next thing. Sorry I have too much to do within a day to spend time wasting on your site to load.

Ill let loose a stream of 4 letting words but Ive never damaged a computer in my anger. I find yelling works better then beating. Even though with my old computer a good whack to the side of the case would make it unfreeze.

I have never took out rage on my computer but I have pleaded with it (usually while booting with new O/C settings). I have seen the results of Doctors who can not use their medical equipment and slamed it to the foor or otherwise abused it when they cannot figure out how to make it do what they want. I get the "I don't have time for that" when I ask why they did not just look the instructions (that pull out of a slot in the bottom) as I show them where it is and how to make it do what they want. I love repairing monitoring equipment

This is why I liked working with diesels... you can beat the shit out of them till your fists are bleeding, scream and yell till your throat is sore, and not even make a dent :). I have gotten very pissed at computers before, mostly because it was 95-110F in the room, clothes soaked in sweat, horrible dialup/wireless internet that is complete crap, etc. Luckily at home, I can say "to hell with this", grab a cold drink, and sit down infront of the tv.

ITs not the computers. Every man and woman has their breaking point, dealing with computers and whiney customers/people, is one way to push it.

I admit I get annoyed with my machine when it takes longer than I'd like for it to do something, but I don't beat it, I just upgrade it.

My main reason for owning a fast computer: I'm impatient. :D

I've learned a long time ago that violence and technology do not mix. :o No, I've found that threats are a great way to fix balky hardware. Just mutter something under your breath about the tortures you're gonna put the machine through during POST. Most times, it then boots right up, with a little shimmer on the screen that I'm pretty sure is terror.

Nope, I've always been too poor to be able to afford to break things. I've also noticed that the angrier I get with computers the less they cooperate, so I try to stay calm and things go much better.

I've gotten pissed off at my mouse at work before..... optical mouse on a wood-grained table (no pad)..... every now and then it'll jump to one corner or the other of the screen... but the most you'll get out of me is a "dammit" or a "sonofa" if I was in the middle of laying out some 30-shot traverse in Microstation..... never thrown a mouse.... never jerked it out of the PC... never killed anyone with it.... :D

After I got my G15 keyboard I kept my old one beside my desk to I could beat it against shit whenever I got mad at the lag/stupidity/shitty rolls in world of warcraft (one of the reasons I quit actually). Somehow the thing still works perfectly. I've never actually been pissed enough to break anything I give a shit about.

Have you been to the OS forum lately? If you dare post something that another user doesn't agree with, all hell breaks loose! Watching many of the knowledgeable people leave that subforum can make one angry.

I have to admit that back in 2000 I had a PIII 550mhz pc and after months of frustration with the system always crashing for one reason or another, I got fedup and litterally kicked it across a room. Some of my friends still laugh to this day about it. I later found out that every piece of hardware failed before I kicked it.

Since then I have never gotten that pissed at a pc like I did that one. If I do get upset at it, I usually just slam my hands on the desk

Now THAT is funny!

Since I work on a PC all day, I try not to panic / fly off the handle right off the bat. I try to think everything through at least once before pressing the panic button and freaking out.

Even if a PC blows up, I got a back up or replacement parts. Two go down? I'm still cool. Three computers bite the dust? I still got the HTPC and the laptop and I can still work. Worst case scenario I can build a box from scratch and be back online in a few hours...tops.

What I hate is stuff like power outages or internet interruptions that can't be fixed locally. Now that is frustrating!
