It's $170 @ newegg w/ free shipping for comparison.

It's a Maxtor MaXLine Pro 500 7H500F0 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive for a more detailed desc.

OEM = 1, 3 or 5 years?

So does the 3Gb/s transfer rate label this drive as SATA 2? I recently purchased the HardOCP Christmas $2800 system for a friend. They recommended a 300gb IDE 7200.10 drive (labeled as perpendicular something) I'm not really sure which is faster? the ide 7200.10 or the sata2 3Gb/s drives? Most new motherboards come with mainly sata ports so I found it odd HardOCP choose that drive for their top Christmas build. I would appreciate anyone clearing this matter up for me. I'm considering picking a few of these 500 Maxtors up.

Does not matter what the interface is, 7200.10 drives are faster. Maxtor does have some that are 7200.10 but they will say that on the drive itself as well as 'Made by Seagate'.

I picked up 2 320 G 7200.10 drives for $59. each shipped on Black Friday. :D

Here is what I found on the Maxtor warranty page (link below)

http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.a14629af82eff9461400585760b46068/?channelpath=%2Fen_us%2FSupport%2FWarranty+Services%2FWarran ty+Periods#bare_drive_warranty

Standalone Hard Drives
-Bare Drive
-Drives not
purchased in
Retail Box
-Drives not sold
to OEMs

Maxtor MaXLine™ ATA/SATA drives will carry a Standard Warranty Period of 5 years.

However, when click on the oem link (here: OEM (http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.a14629af82eff9461400585760b46068/?epi_menuItemID=a14629af82eff9461400585760b46068&epi_menuID=976d37cd478c5826433f226075b46068&epi_baseMenuID=976d37cd478c5826433f226075b46068&channelpath=/en_us/Support/Warranty%20Services/Original%20Equipment%20Manufacturer%20Warranty) ) it says the following:

The limited, non-transferable warranty on products sold through an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) is extended only to the OEM that purchases the products directly from Maxtor or Quantum. Therefore, owners of OEM manufactured equipment containing a Maxtor or Quantum product must contact the OEM or the place of purchase for warranty service.

So I wonder if the 5-yr warranty still applies? Anyone know?

I am sorry, but I can't help but laugh that you needed a calculator to figure that out?

279.98 / 1000 ==== hrmm? I wonder..

Has anyone RECEIVED these drives yet? I want to find out if we can VERIFY the warranty duration.

~930Gigs

My 750s format out to 698
my 400s format out to 372
my 300s format out to 279 (or 276 in another brand.. go figure)

4x300s barely clears 1TB, after formatting

Course, in my sig, I am listing all the unformatted capacities, so I'm no better.

the post format size depends on a few things, the number of platers and platter denstity, not to mention your cluster size. yes it will be less than 1tb. i managed to get 242gb out of my 250gb maxline III's. formated sizes vary so shhhhh.

Huh...I guess you're right...My old TX2 Plus (SATA150) has RAID support, so I figured they would have just carried it over into their newer model. Oh well.

Weird. Every single harddrive I own (and technically, that's over 300) conforms to a ~7% loss.

FWIW, I can CONFIRM, the fact that these drives have a 5 year warranty.

At least, the drives I ordered do.
