Newegg link for the lazy.

Only difference I can tell between the 05 and 06 is one is retail the other is OEM. Retail comes with Nero and an extra white faceplate according to Newegg.

No Nero is a plus in my book...it is bloated POS software these days.

Bump for a very nice drive as well, just ordered one:)

I bought one of these back around Christmas and love it. I sure am glad now I resisted temptation and didn't buy a SATA burner a couple of months ago when they were about $100. :D

How do these compare to the NEC 1550a models? I got an OEM one from Newegg awhile back for under $30 shipped. It had some trouble reading DVDs, so I updated the firmware and it seems to read anything I give it. It can get pretty loud reading discs though, especially installing from them. Do all drives do that?

Good thing it comes with Nero 7. I hear Nero 6 does not work with Vista.

What a rip off! I would wait until they're $5  geez. Seriously though, $35 seems reasonable. How do these compare to the ever-popular Samsung units?

Even Nero version 7950A is not completely Vista compatible. Nero for Vista is slated for release in March 2007. Hopefully, the version included will let you ugrade versions at that point for free.

How's LiteOn's quality these days? They went to crap for awhile.

They have gotten considerably better as they certainly had a dip for a while. I have the 832 and 1693, this drive has received very good feedback at CDFreaks forum as well. Those guys certainly are well versed in how good/bad an optical drive would be:)

Odd. Now this is a part of their "8 hour sale."

It just happens to be the same price.

It seemed to me that they aren't too popular at different media forums, and most of the feedback i found was negative, the sata lite-on's inparticularly. The consensus seemed to be that "sata" burners were not ready for prime-time and that ide-burners still held the edge in features and stability. I did find researching this stuff a little tedious so maybe i missed all the good threads (?)

Of course this is just one man's findings so i'd encourage others to do their own research.

Here's the same drive posted in the topic. Use $10 off through google checkout for a total of $31.99 shipped: http://www.buy.com/prod/16X_DVDRW_SuperAllWrite_SATA/q/loc/101/203868140.html

This is the SH-16A7S-05 version. Again, $10 off through google checkout brings this to $28.99 shipped: http://www.buy.com/prod/SATA_Super_AllWrite_16x8x8x_16x6x8x_12x_16x_48x32x48x_16x_SA TA_DV/q/loc/101/203868109.html

Less than $30 USD shipped to your doorstep.

Agree with doing your own digging. Media is of course the key here. I use only Taiyo Yuden discs rather than generic stuff from Office Depot, Compusa, etc. I believe media quality is just as important to a burners success as the burner itself in some cases. Lite-On's are known to prefer high quality media such as TY, Verbatim, etc.

Yeah. I had one in cart, ordered it, went back to order another and BOOM! Out of stock. Then I get an email saying the one I ordered is backordered.

Yay.
