View Full Version : Scorching Hot! 74GB WD Raptor - $89 + tax @ BB -YMMV (good chance though)

The 74GB Raptor is on clearance right now at Best Buy for 101.99.

Use this (http://emailinfo.bestbuy.com/pp/editor_NET/v3/CampaignWrapper.aspx?E=6602;348811;714881278;1;02&R=T1_CMP_6603&A=1007&ci=6603) to bring the price down to $89.75. (It has worked for me all week, even though it only states external drives.)

YMMV = Because I think a lot of places are sold out or have low stock. I got the last one left, it was just sitting there, all alone, staring at me with no other 74GBs around, screaming BUY ME; so I did. :D

I'd wager there's a good chance you'll find one if you hit a couple Best Buys. (I found this one at the first one I went to). This same deal will get you the 150GB Raptor X for $149 + tax, and there are plenty of those there.

Enjoy!

id say wasting a few bucks in gas is worth it considering the reward, youre saving *60 dollars off THE LOWEST ON PRICE GRABBER* ;]

The 12% coupon didn't work for me when I got the 150Gb Raptors last week. The system won't apply the discount, so you'll need a supervisor to not read the fine print to get it to work.

Luckily, I was able to PM the 150's @ 169.99 yesterday, so I don't feel bad about the 12%.

FYI the SKU is 7898206 according to Google's cache. You might try to call one of the stores and ask an employee to look at their computer to see if any stores in your area have stock of that SKU.

I believe BB sells the WD740ADFDR if I'm not mistaken, which is the 16mb model.

Guys i still don;t understand i can put 2 x 300GB 16MB SATAII hard drives in RAID 0 and beat the crap out of the Raptor, for almost the same price, but five times the storage.

Why the hell do we need raptor?

It'd really depend on the specs of your current HDs, annaconda. My puny 36 GB Raptors blew the doors off of my previous 7200 RPM RAID0 hard drives. Write speeds and disk access times were noticeably faster and there was a tangeable difference in load times, especially when moving large files.

My 2 cents!

i would disagree, youll beat the crap out of the raptor only on certain occasions, those of which are not often

the raptors will get the speed benefits at all times and on all occasions

One Raptor will be faster than two 300GB SATAII hard drives in RAID-0 in most cases.

I PM'd it at BB - just brought the receipt in and got $60+tax back (I got 2). It's not an advertised sale, but since it's in their system the $169.99 price comes up - no hassles.

exactly, I would have never considered getting a pair of raptors since i was dead set on a pair of barracudas for my computer build and the fact that raptors are freaking expensive. it was going to be an impulse buy if they had any in stock, but my bank account is thanking me for not finding the raptor drives.

Picked one up in Burleson, TX ... there was one left on the shelf when I left yesterday evening...

shop online and use "store pickup" option, then if a store says "available" you're in luck!

The rest of the Fort Worth area stores were out as of yesterday evening.

$161.xx after tax for the Raptor X 150.

Well, sorry had to quote ya :P

These Raptors=10,000 rpm for fast read/write times
Barracudas=7,200 rpm

So doing the math, it's actually 28% faster (not factoring the cache) :P

lol, i dont think the math should be based on the rpm's alone :P

if you look at the seek times and other stuff like that, its more or less 2 times quicker :)

also i would personally argue that in real world usage the potential performance difference could be staggering.

for example: if the raptor copies 10 files in 2 seconds that would be, 20 seconds for 100 files. but if the seagate copies 10 files in 3 seconds, that would be 30 seconds! so while you might save 1 second with 10 files, you will save 10 seconds with 100! (this is not a real test or anything just logic)

:D

Archaea
02-11-2007, 03:32 PM
it definately is NOT just RPM that counts.

Raptors have ~4ms seek time. Most 7200 RPM drives have an 8.5ms seek time.

Seek time is basically the amount of time the read arm takes to move to the location it needs to be to read the data from the spinning platter. So the rotation allows for the faster continuous data reading, but the individual file spot copying stuff is where the raptor will REALLY shine. 2x's faster is pretty accurate in that light.

omg i just went to BB in Jefferson City , MO and i fckn hate it .... The stupid girl looked me in a suspicious way and asked me where did i get it since i didnt have that rewards thing membership. So i told her i found it online and membership is free anyway and i'll become a member right now. She still wanted to know how did i get that coupon if im not a member... so another girl came and she said its not a problem ... then she started reading the coupn and said its only for an external hard disk ... omfg i was so pissed. I said yea but i think u can also use it for internals etc etc. No good. I said FINE ill just pay the full damn amount. And when i gave her the money she checked it with the marker lol to see if it was real or fake lol.

Also the hard disk was $120.. not 101. I hate this city and i hate this BB.

One question .. it says it is SATA 1 , are there any SATA2 raptors??
