From what I read at a certain other site, the rebate is kind of a pain. They don't have an 800 number and you have to email a gmail account to ask for rebate status.

Wow...I guess I will give it a try. Umm...might want to correct your post because they do have a number to contact them. Before I place an order, did anyone else order something from XPC-Gear?

I ordered from them a while ago. I didn't have a problem.

Haven't played the rebate game w/ XPC, but never had any problems w/ them on purchases (fans & cables).

If you've used up your stock of sarcasm over a stupid error, could you answer the question that should've been obvious was my actual intent to ask: is it SATA or PATA?

yes, I realize this is free, and I shouldn't even comment on quality.. but does anyone have one of these? Do they suck? I need an enclosure, I don't need anything super, but I don't want something that blows either. Is it even worth the hassle?

I bought a couple of these from xpcgear a few months back (~ $10 each) and they were a piece of junk. The thing worked a few times then crapped out all together (both ended up failing).
Luckily I was only out ~ $20.

meh, did the drive survive the failure? I'm only interested in one of these as an emergency recovery option for my sisters older laptops. Only needs to run long enough to suck the drive dry.
The drive was fine, it was the enclosure itself. I didn't use it on a daily basis, I only used it to do data backups on laptops (ie pulling the drive from laptop and using enclosure to backup data).

Got mines yesterday!! Whoo Hoo! :P
Installation was a zip, and it works great! :) Just wish the usb cable was built-in so I don't have to remind myself to take it with my when I go somewhere with it..but heck, its free! ;)

got mine yesterday too. haven't tested it out though, 99% sure my two month old laptop's pata, and I don't have any sata laptop drives on hand to test with. Even with it's flakey reputation though I hope it'll last long enough to let me pull the data from my sisters old laptops if they croak at some point. I've never seen a USB y cable before though.
