I just picked up a Logitech Harmony 360 remote to use with my xbox360 as a media center extender. It has all the features of the Harmony 550 except it replaces two buttons with 4 xbox controller buttons and at $69 it's half the price

SOB, just bought this from BB last week for $99. It was worth the $99, so anybody on the fence, it is definitely worth the $69. Nothing beats replacing my 5 remotes for my 360, TV, AV receiver, Directtv receiver, and DVD player with this baby and having it work better on all my electronics than their own remotes did. My only gripe is the number buttons are too squished together, but you get used to it quick.
Edit: If i walk into BB with this add, any chance they would credit me the $30 difference?

Might, if not, return it. Best Buy has a pretty good no questions asked return policy.

I really like the looks of the 550 better, but what functionality will I lose if I do not own an x-box 360 and don't plan on buying one.
The 550 can work with up to 4 more devices than the 360 acording to logitech website. My Question however is wetehr or not this remote can be manuly programmed by another remote. I'm not sure I want to take for granted that all my devices are in their database... Acording to their website I am not sure of this. They also do not even have the 720 listed on their website. if the 550 can be manualy programmed then I'm going to buy one, but if not it looks like the 880 or 670 might be better choices. What I do NOT want to happen is to buy a universal remote, then end up using one or two of my other remotes anyways...I'd rather pay the difference in price. the 880 and 550 seem to get the best reviews from what I read so far. There are complaints of the 720 having too bright of a backlight on the LCD screen.
For example will these remotes be able to have the functionality of the Windows MCE remote? is the MCE Remote considered a device? I just want to make a one time purchase and be done with it. I want a good universal remote....

The 880 has a much better screen and i think a better layout. the 360 and 550 are literally the same remote, except the 360 has two extra buttons and comes preprogrammed for the 360 right out of the box. Both have the ability to learn from other remotes, so there's an extremely slim chance it won't be able to control one of your components. The Data base is also huge and the software is pretty user friendly. All you have to do is enter the component's brand and model number and it sets itself up for you. I was in the same boat. I looked before hand and didn't see anything specifically saying it would be able to control my hughes directtv DVR, but i took the chance and no problems.
The other nice thing about these harmony remotes is that you can use the software to program each individual button. If the preset array isn't correct (for instance, my previous channel button didn't work for my directtv DVR) you can go in and manually change it. You can tag any button you want to do anything you want. And the best part is, the activity button acts as a macro. For instance, when i wanted to play my 360 i had to use my TV remote to change to input 3 on the TV, my AV receiver remote to change to the optical input for the audio, and my 360 remote to turn on the 360. With this remote, you just point it at your setup, hit the activities button, hit the "play 360" macro, and it does all of that for you. One remote, one button.

I tried the 550, the 680 and finally ended up with the 880.
The 550 didn't feel comfortable in my hand and the buttons seemed hard to find/press for me. The 680 lacked a good screen and also didn't have the "Tilt" sensor. I grabbed a 880 off of Woot.com and couldn't be happier.

The 880 definitely looks cooler. The screen is bigger and i think you can set more macros with it. But the software is the same and i think the 880 is about $200. For $69, this remote is a very good deal.

Lies, the Harmony 880 is $148 off amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Advanced-Universal-Control/dp/B00093IIRA/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-5380404-5407106?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1193068968&sr=1-1) or $99 for a refurb with 1-yr warranty (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-880-Remote-Control/dp/B000O7I6VE/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/104-5380404-5407106?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1193068968&sr=1-2)

$200 at BB. $148 is a great price, but you are still talking about two gadgets that functionally do the same thing. One for $148, one for $69.
$99 for a refurb with 1-yr warranty (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-880-Remote-Control/dp/B000O7I6VE/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/104-5380404-5407106?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1193068968&sr=1-2)

Sounds good. How many activity buttons are there? The X_box says it can do 11 devices which means I will have nearly maxed it out. The 550 says it can do 15 which is significantly better for some (without x-boxes).
I think I'm going to save up for the 880 to be sure I am happy with it, it was on sale new at Dell a while back for $109. I'm not sure if getting a refurb is worth it or not to save $10. I'm fairly sure it will go on sale again for about 100 from Woot.com or Dell etc.
The Logitech 1000 looks awesome and very very PIMP. If I had a remote like that the chicks would flock to my door! but ouch $500 for a remote!
Can someone tell me how to lookup my devices in Logitecs database before I buy? I thought you had to have the software to do that.

woot refurb remotes are not the same quality as amazon ones. The woot ones are all 90-day, as opposed to 1-yr on amazon, indicating they also likely are recertified instead of just grabbed and rebagged.
The Harmony 1000 is NOT $500. It is $289 from amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Harmony-Advanced-Universal-Remote/dp/B000II6YEA/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-5380404-5407106?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1193074987&sr=8-1), possibly cheaper elsewhere if you look.

Well, it was on sale new for like 109 from dell, durring their 10 days of deals. I might bite on the refurb, after all it is just a remote, but still I'd rather buy new since amazon shipping always takes like a month. :(
edit: I bit on the refurb and signed up for amazon prime, already stored the date to cancel my 1 month free membership to avoid the anual charge :) I think the 880 is worth the extra cash, although I would actualy prefer regular batteries, since I use Nimh rechargables anyways. I think I would have picked up the 550 but this one only ended up being a few bucks more than the 550 on ebay which is the same price - shipping as the 360. + Amazon Refurb > new on ebay IMO. Can't wait to get rid of these 8 remotes...

I have the 670 for my DVR, 50 Sony DLP, etc and it is the best remote I have every baught. It was the one component I wouldn't skimp out on when I baught my TV and Surround Sound System back in March. My wife was hesitant about spending $150 on it until she started using it. Replaced 5 remotes with one. I have to change batteries about every 3 months but it's a small sacrifice. The color LCD ones probably last even shorter. The Harmony software is incredibly easy as mentioned and they really do have just about every device from the past 10+ years. If you want one of these the xbox one is a good buy.

Just got the Harmony 1000, man its so sweet!!!
I got something of everything for this remote,
1 xbox 360 = works
1 Ps3 = not yet
1 cheap off brand speaker system = works
1 hdmi switch 1 into 5 = works
1 Westinghouse 42' = works
1 Comcast hd cable box = works soooooooo good. :D
1 Toshiba ( in sig ) laptop/media center = works
This was only just the living room, can't wait to try more devices.
Haven't tryed adding the wii to the remote yet but not sure I need to. Got it from amazon with 2 day shipping for $302 and change. Worth every penny. Man the feel of it in my hands I can see that it won't take long to work out the rest of it. I'd post some pics but for some reason comcast has got some issues with my home page. ;)

I just got a westy 37" tv and a harmony 550 remote for 699 shipped off the net brand new. One helluva deal to start with. I love the 550 and I would recommend getting the 550 if you can. If the 360 is the cheaper option you will not be disappointed. It works with my TV, 360, Philips audio system and I just got a DVR installed yesterday and have yet to try the remote with it. I am sure it will work great. One touch activities are a plus.
I recommend biting on this remote if you are tired of the 8 remote shuffle. You will not be disappointed.

Just got my harmony 360 in yesterday and so far it is worth every penny. Customizing the buttons is such a nice feature. While watching TV I use the xbox buttons for my Satellite functions. Y= PVR, X= Page Down, A= Page up and B = Cancel. The "help" feature on the remote is very intuitive and easy to use. Also the software and setup was extremely fast. If you are in limbo on this one I would say go for it.

Same here, I love my 880 and would pick up a 1000, but not being able to control the PS3 sucks.
Best part about the logitechs is 30 second skip on the comcast DVRs works out of the box, you don't have to hack your comcast remote to get the skip function.

WOW I'm loving this 880 from amazon. It has exceeded my expectations. Every device I wanted to setup was found in the database. I think I may want to change some of the buttons in the menu so i don't have to go to the next page... For example my logitech have 4 different analog's on the first page, I'm much rather have analog, Optical and Digital...I don't even know what analog stereo1,2,3 are supposed to do!
The light blinks on the 5500's when I select them, but it does not do anything. Can someone enlighten me?
Same with TV, I want the DVI, HDMI options on the first page intead of on the 3rd and fourth pages.
But wow, the program was super easy to use, anyone that says it is difficult must not have read the directions as it walks you right through everything.
880 for $100 is a steal. It was definately worth the extra $30 for the lithium battery, better LCD that can display twice the information and options at once and the nicer button layout (Maybe).
I just need to work on the activity buttons now and test with media center (my Sage Demo expired and I don't know if it is worth teh $80 which is kind of steep), but I see no reason why it would not work!

the 880 is SO much nicer than the 5xx. i had a 520 that i dropped on tile and cracked the lcd screen :o so i ended up picking up a new 880 6 months or so back for $150 and it is so much nicer in every single way
well worth the extra money.
oh, and on my 520 remote, the labels on the buttons started wearing off VERY quickly. within a few months

Haha, I'm glad you guys were able to take advantage of the price. I got mine in and It's awesome. I can't belive how much nicer it is than my $120 All-for-one I bought just a few years back. This one actually runs everything correctly.
I had to pick up a new universal because the wife was sick of juggling remotes and the old one couldn't be updated. Now with this one she's doesn't have any trouble running anything...even the PVR function on the 360.
BTW, if you read the reviews you'd see that the 520's are crap. They feel cheap and have are known to have a button wear issue. The 550 and 360 don't suffer from those problems.

yea I got the hang of it now.
problem is with ms media center device added.
I made a custom activity "Computer"
When I add this device it automatically turns my computer into standby mode if it is already on...How annoying, and for whatever reason my computer does not come out of standby correctly as it looses all internet access until I reboot (another can of worms all together). Is there a way I can enable the remote to use a device, but NOT power it on? I can manual control the media center by selecting the device, but then I have to quit out back to logitec z5500's to adjust their volume. it would be nice to have it enabled as the activity so I would be able to use media center buttons, but control the z5500's as far as sound...
It would be nicer to have it go into media center mode when i switch it over to "Computer" Activity,
