It's a great processor. A bit more fine-tuned than the normal X2s, and the modifier is unlocked. Great chip for overclockers.

Got one. The $10-off promotion effectively negated the tax (and then some) for me, which was what kept me from getting one even after it dropped from $130. Hopefully the one I get can OC to 3.2GHz... I want to use all 800MHz of my RAM, damn it!

FOR HTPC ?

:p I was wondering the same thing HTPC? Then I though maybe to lower the multiplier to get lower speed and less heat. I think you can do that with any of the Athlon X2's.

Yes you can but then why not buy X2 3600 and save some money.

Maybe the HTPC is black? :p

3.2ghz is cake for this thing...

Naw, 3.1GHz is cake, and 3.2GHz is more like a surprise cream filling.

Maybe the HTPC is black? :pTo Funny. I did jump on this deal though just to see how high the BE will go. I have a 3600+ that tops out at 2.9. So for the low amount of cash and that the motherboard I have does not like going over 300FSB(HT). I wanted to give it a try. Also my case is black so my processor should be a Black Edition. :p

That's what I would do with mine. It will go into a VMware Server. If I can run it at 200x10 1.15V that would knock the power consumption down by over 20W. For a box that's on 24/7 that's a couple bucks a month in electricity.

I know we are getting off subject of the deal, but I have to ask the same question as Annaconda. Can't you lower the multiplier on an X2 3600+ and the voltage. Then your only paying maybe $40-$50 for a processor, and then still saving money on electricity. Is the BE processor just better at staying stable even at lower voltage than the regular X2's. I ask this just because I have never tried to go lower with my X2 3600+. I just cannot bring myself to want to go slower.:D

Good God, the X2 3600+ is already slow (stock). If lower power is wanted or needed, one of those BE2300/ECS motherboard combos at Fry's would be a pretty good deal. The motherboard can fetch maybe $35-40 on Fleabay (last one I had sold for around $40), making the CPU cost around $50.

I hope my 5000+ BE comes with a surprise cream filling! :D

I'm not understanding the logic here. It's my understanding that all X2 processors throttle when idle. I don't think it's a smart move to buy a 5000+ Black Edition CPU for an HTPC if power consumption and heat are the main concerns. You buy the BE to get a beefy (and almost effortless) overclock.

Why would you buy a 5000+ only to underclock it to save on power? Buy a cheaper, slower chip and run it at stock.

I have X2 3600 running in my server 24/7. In windows 2003 you have option to run your processor in server mode. When i switch to server mode my X2 3600 runs @ 1 ghz all the time, saves me a lot of electricity :)

It is the same option you can find in Vista and XP may be. In vista it called saving mode.

My question is directed to why would someone want to buy a 5000+ BE for a HTPC setup. It does not make sense. Since you can get a X2 3600+ for much cheaper. I'm not looking at buying a BE to lower it. LOL That would defeat my whole computer experience in life. My question went to another person that they wanted it for there HTPC. Which I could only think the reason they would want it for is maybe stable lower voltage. To keep the heat down and the fans off. Even then Cool N Quite setting in the bios should take care of that. This would be with any processor. Sorry guys if I was miss leading you. I was very sure someone said something about HTPC before me. That is the reason I commented with Annaconda about the HTPC. Now I do not see it. So this is a dead subject.
