Nice processor, nice video card, nice ram, nice hard-drive.
Seems like about the best price I've seen for the feature set.
I have an 8400 in my spare PC. It seems to handle most any game outside of crysis level games at full resolution and detail levels.

i got the vostro 1500 with the 1.6ghz core2 and 8400M GS (but a 120gig hdd) for $599... I added some other stuff like upgrading to home PREMIUM $29, 6-cell to 9-cell $40, bluetooth $20, and screen to ultrasharp $50... mine came with 1gb, but i manually installed 4gb myself for $60 AR
this is not a bad deal... actually... i take that back. just the CPU is a little on the low side, but made up for with the ram and bigger hdd than what I got back in the summer.

Unless you want to get the 8600m GT, the vostro 1400 is a better choice. It is much lighter, has a better layout, has an easily upgradeable processor (its just under a bay door like ram in most laptops), and gets much better battery life. It doesn't even cost more, de3pending on the deal Dell has.
I myself have both. I have a 1.4Ghz Core2, 2gb, 8400m GS Vostro 1400 and a 2Ghz Core2, 8600m GT, 2gb Vostro 1500. I paid $620 and $830, respectively.
The 8400m GS on the Vostro 1400 is adequate for games like CS Source and BF2, but will not run games like Company of Heroes to my satisfaction. It's really quite slow, and wont run any newer games at anything other than low settings at lower-than-native resolution. The processor speed may be partially to blame, but then again it IS a 4mb cache Core2. That said, the Vostro 1400 with a 9-cell gets seriously about 6-7 hours on a charge when all you're doing is word processing and surfing. No joke. It's fantastic. The layout of the 1400 is far superior to the 1500, which has the volume keys and speakers basically underneath the laptop. It's goofy. The Vostro 1500 chews up games though, and still gets like 4.5 hours on a charge, and has a larger screen. Both have a METAL casing that adds weight but is SOLID. I LOVE not having cheap flimsy plastic laptops.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that if you're getting a Vostro with an 8400m GS, make sure it's a 1400, because it has a far superior design.

:( i have the 1500... i like it, but it's started to feel heavy. I work in IT, so it's annoying carrying it around, but it's a good thing I'm a regular gym rat... some typical IT geeks have no muscles and would probably cry at it being heavy.
the 1500 that i have is very sturdy, though, and i'm happy about that. battery life is 5-6 hrs with a 9-cell (but it sticks out the back a bit). i recommend the upgraded LCD. I got the 1440x900 Ultrasharp upgrade for $50. I had a 1400 without the upgraded screen, and my 1500 with the upgraded screen looked MUCH better.

I totally agree with you there ordovician, I picked up the 1400 a few weeks ago with the 8400, gota say this thing is well built and it can take all the games I throw at it! well worth the $600 I spent for this powerful of a system.

I dunno, I was not impressed with the 8400 for new games. Older games it was fine, but any newer game will suffer badly. I mean badly. Stuff like COH and Bioshock are unplayable.. maybe I'm just hard to please though. Otherwise, the Vostro 1400 is a perfect laptop.
