I saw this and I'm very tempted, but I think I'm going to stay strong and hold out until these go down to $200. Best price I've seen so far, though! C'mon Microcenter, you can beat Frys! :D

Yeah, but then it would outstrip any drive size for cost/GB, right?
Has anyone seen a drive offering $0.19/GB or less?

Almost - When Fry's had the 750Gb for $145.99. That comes in at 19.3 cents/Gig.

Well for me that would be 21.1 cents/GB when you factor in tax...

Yeah 500GB drives are definitely the sweetspot for value, but I should have said I haven't been able to acquire one for less than $0.19/GB out the door. I guess people in OR could pull it off since I have seen some 500GB for $89.99 and they don't pay sales tax.

Got 2 @ Fry's Brokaw San Jose.
They gave me the business about 1 per person when their ad says 2.
The manager was cool and rung me up for the other on another register.
$254. and change per drive. Not bad.

I don't understand why this is even warm when you can get a Western Digital 1TB for $240 at newegg all day.

True.
But it is a nice cheap BIG drive for storage. :D

It's only marginally faster.
http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3161&p=1
Small differences in speed aren't going to make a difference if you're just using the drive for storage.
If you must have a large, fast drive, check out the 7K1000 or WD 75000AAKS.

1. The one @ Fry's has double the Cache
2. Not everyone wants a GP drive
3. Seagates have a 5 year warranty over WD's 3
WD
Average Latency 5.6ms
Seagate
Average Latency 4.16ms

1) As I already stated, the speed difference is minimal and not important if you're just using the drive for storage. Both are considerably slower than the 7K1000.
2) And not everyone wants a Seagate, what's your point?
3) True, but how many times have you had a drive fail after 3 years?

I haven't read any reviews of that drive, but I'd be surprised if it's faster than the 7K1000.
edit: I did take a quick look at Tom's Hardware, but that is hardly the place to go for accurate information. I'll wait until StorageReview reviews it.

Why didn't you mention this to me earlier. I had same problem at my store too (Palo Alto). I referenced the ad and cashier said okay I'll have to ring you up separate. Not too much of an issue if I was using two different credit cards but I was using company credit card so I had to wait there for manager override on the second purchase.

With RAID almost a standard feature on motherboards these days you would think they would allow 2.
Guess that makes too much sense.

Also available in store for this price (a least in the So-Cal stores) through Tuesday February 26. Also one per household, but you can just go through the line a couple times if you need more. ;)

You can purchase more than one if you are clever. But yes, I only buy hdd's in pairs or groups, saves on shipping and makes things less complicated for me :)
