If any of you are in the Philadelphia area, there is a Microcenter near King of Prussia:
St. Davids Square
550 East Lancaster Avenue
St. Davids, PA 19087
It's about 50 miles from my house. Wish I had the $199 for the quad core, but I don't get paid till the end of the month :(

F'ing awesome find OP, thanks! I've been looking for a quad core on the cheap and this is it. I called the Long Island location and they have "plenty" in stock. The sale is until March 2nd. I'm driving out there tonight. They have a 15% restocking fee so I hope this is a G0 unit. Are most Q6600s being sold of the G0 variety or is it still a toss up unless you buy from a retailer that makes sure you get a G0? Microcenter wouldn't confirm what revision the chip was. I'm not looking for a monster OC but if it isn't G0 I should still be able to get 3GHZ at least right?

Just look at the box before you take it to the register. If it says SLACR on it it's G0.

I'm going to call the store back and see if I can get one of the reps to check the box for me to make sure, plus put one on the side for pickup. Now to find a screenshot of the box so I can talk them through it, if they cooperate.

Thanks OP!Yeah, tax sucks. Total was $217 here in NY. My total with gas is $230. I saved $50 and got to listen to some tracks I haven't heard in a while during the drive to the store and back, I think I spent about 2hrs total driving.

Just picked one of these up for myself today. G0 Stepping. The guy that sold it to me seemed a little peeved I didn't want to buy anything else, but who cares, I'm not going to buy extra stuff just to appease them. They priced it this low.
I'm already up to 3.45Ghz with plenty of headroom to go. My only beef is how damned warped the heat spreader on this thing is. There were 0.25mm gaps between a razor blade and the surface in some spots. I think I'm going to have to lap it since I've already confirmed it works just fine :)
updated overclock - 3.45 and I haven't even tried maxing it out yet - WOOOT

That's the hook, get you in there for a Q6600 @ $199, a SLACR at that with the hopes that you walk out with a new PC worth of components. The Micro Center out in LI was like a candy store, almost like if I were to walk through New Egg. They had OEM parts on shelves and in bins. Sale tags everywhere, it was quite overwhelming. Luckily I don't need anything so it was easy to resist temptation.
I'm already up to 3.15Ghz with plenty of headroom to go. My only beef is how damned warped the heat spreader on this thing is. There were 0.25mm gaps between a razor blade and the surface in some spots. I think I'm going to have to lap it since I've already confirmed it works just fine :)Hahaha, you ain't lying. I took a credit card and held the chip up to the light and checked for light leakage all across the chip and after taking a ton of mental notes I got a picture of a S shaped pit running across the chip. I need to lap this bitch. Problem is, this will be my first time lapping a chip. I'm actually excited about this. I wonder how many degrees I'll drop from lapping, if I don't f*ck it up.

I just walked in and said I would like this priced matched. They tried to give me the whole its not a local store so we wont price match. Long story short I was in and out of there in about 20min with my quad core for 199 plus tax! Luckily they handed me a slacr the first time so I didnt have to go into that whole thing.

NewEgg charges me TAX anyway cuz I'm in NJ. With big ticket items I buy there I ship it to my in-laws in PA.
I'm going Saturday ... if the GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L MB ($100 s/h+tax) is about the same @ MC as NewEgg, I'll pick it up there as well.

Isn't this deal only to the end of the month anyways? I think the BYOPC sale is to the 29th. That is a Friday. Saturday is March 1st. The sale might be over and then higher prices will kick back in. Anyone would like to confirm this.
BTW, 3.5% sales tax at the Paterson store. Not faulting you or anything else. Still a good deal when you do not have to pay 7% :)

Actually I believe this one expires today.

They're fairly lenient on CPU prices - as far as I know. I think as long as you talk to an associate about it, you should still be able to get the sale price.

Hi,
That's cool for those buying one. I just got my 8800GT from there. That was my big spending. As for the Q6600, my wife was opposed to the fiscal spending but she now had a change in heart. I might wind up getting one now. It is hard to spend money when you are not working and such. Who knows.

Hi,
Just got back from the MC in Northern NJ. I got a quad but only one though. The kid who have to "help" me gave me some grief about not buying it in a bundle. I told him that I just want the processor. He said he had to clear it with a manager. Apparently, he claimed there were too many people by more than 2 in a clip. However since I was buying it conjunction with a DVD burner (needed one for an upgrade to my parent's PC) that is qualified as a "bundle" I was going to pick another one up for a random person who wanted one but didn't have a local MC near them. Just trying to be friendly on the H.
In other news, I got a slacr. Crossing fingers for a good one for OC purposes.

I just grabbed mine at the Paterson store Northern NJ. they have +100 in stock , no e8400's
They really pushed that i get a bundle and after some conversation the salesman gave me some 4gb 2x 2gb corsair xms dhx for $86 , which is $2 over newegg right now with MIR. not a huge fan of the large heatspreaders but I took it, it was a decent price considering the 3% tax in that area , and no shipping cost. I still probably could have had it for less online, but for $10 -$20 or so didn't think it was worth the hassle.

Completed my setup yesterday as well (Thank MavAlpha @ MC)
I got the Q6600-G0 (SLACR) with the EVGA nv650i Ultra MB (good tweakability)
For the moment, slapped in 2 of 4 GB of 667mhz DDR2 and my old-trusty X1950gt
I don't know how high I can take it up since I was told that my 667 ram may be my hurdle... but I got such a great deal that I may not care right now.
I also tested my brother's 8800GT on it and it gave me 10K+ on 3DMark06 @ 1280x1024 with 4x AA
I got ways to go still, have to figure out how to play with the LINKED/UNLINKED settings. Or I may just turn to NTUNE for the GUI

Cobalt
Go straight to 333Mhz FSB.
Your ram should be able to handle it. You multiply your RAM speed by 2x's
In your screenie, it shows your bus speed at 289 from the stock 266. You can go to 333 with your ram (=3.0GHZ cpu) before you even start overclocking your RAM.

Hi,
They are going to be G0 SLACR models. I have a 3.31 Ghz overclock at 1.24 Volts under load.
I wound up spending around 500 when all said and done at MC. I did the EVGA 8800 GT special, Corsair XMS2 4GB kit, the Q6600 and some other odds and ends. However, it only cost about 200 to do a CPU, video and memory upgrade. So it was not that bad in the end for me. Plus this box will be around for quite sometime. I really didn't plan on the upgrades I did anyway but since there was an opportunity, I took it if you know what I mean. I would have been happy with just he newer video. The quad and the RAM were just a nice bonus :)

To explain my post a bit more - the deal is awesome and I'd love to get one, but for people with almost nothing compatible there is a lot more to buy and it adds up quick. Right after I saw the in-store inventory I decided to not buy one and think about it for a few minutes and realized I would have a lot of additional hardware to buy:
$200 for the CPU
$80 for 4GB RAM
$260 for an MSI 780i Diamond board (based on overclocking reports from here)
$220+ for another BFG 8800GT OC
~$120 for a new power supply (mine is before sata and six pin connectors)
= $880 + tax & shipping, then
+ $??? for additional cooling or whatever
Damn I wanted to upgrade my Opty 175 @ 2.5. Maybe I'll just invest in better cooling and bump the O/C a bit more.

It's pretty obvious they're trying to clear them out to make room for the 45nm Quads/Duals. The fact that they have so many points to Intel giving them a hell of a deal in order to get them out of their inventory. I'll bet the sale goes on until they're gone or almost gone. Ah you must have talked to Will then :) If it was in fact him, he did the same thing. He claimed they were telling the floor people everything had to be in a bundle package. As long as he buys H member mavalpha a nice big steak I am ok with it. Mav really does not make commission like the other floor guys. Just got mine setup tonight on an Abit IP35-e ($60 board)
Running Prime 95 on all four cores at 100%
Overclocked to 3.0Ghz on stock voltage. CPU-Z shows it running at 1.128
VID is 1.2
On the stock heatsink and fan using artic silver ceramique I get about 40/40/37/37 at idle overclocked to 3.0ghz and 60/60/57/57 at load on prime 95 hitting all four cores to 100% at 3.0ghz.
I LOVE being able to overclock 25% without changing voltage. That rocks! Coming from my AMD system where I could get 300mhz and things got flaky I'm GLAD i'm coming back to Intel!
Edit ---------------------
Update -- I let prime 95 on all four cores run last night all night and found I'm 100% stable at default voltage @ 3.0Ghz using the retail Intel Heat Sink and Fan and a FSB multiplier of 333mhz 1:1 RAM multiplier etc. My temps got up to 66C according to the core temp logs. Not that big of a deal since I'm still and default voltage and it's stable. I guess I could upgrade my heatsink/fan at some point and try for higher - but 3.0Ghz is enough for now. This chip really flys!

I notice MC at Tustin, CA has about 20 Q6600 in stock today.
Most of them are L745B049 with 1/02/08 pack date, and there are also one or two L745A793, L745A871, and L744A469 in the cabinet.

Just got one. Columbus OH store still has at least 10 in their case, all SLACR. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the good stepping, right?
Also picked up an Asus P5K and 8800 GTS G92. Which is good because we're getting 12-15 inches of snow and I'll be in all weekend. :p

Pretty similar to what I'm doing with my Q6600 I got from this deal. Ordered a 8800GTS G92, a P5K-E/Wifi and memory yesterday. Can't wait until I get it in. Same parts I used to upgrade my son's computer with a couple months ago and I was able to get his Q6600 running @ 3.4Ghz with no problems... ;)

The heatsink going on mine is in my sig, Thermalright SI-128 with a 120mm Coolermaster LED fan. Works fantastic on my current E6400. The HS I put on my son's computer was the upgraded version, the SI-128SE with an Akasa 120mm fan.

E6400 and Q6600 are way different cpu's to cool. My Zalman that would WTF own the E6400 is struggling at 100% loads on the Q6600.
The best out there right now on air is the TRUE which stands for ThermalRight Ultra120 Extreme

My understanding is the SI-128/128SE should cool comparably to the TRUE. Not as good, but not bad. The SI-128SE on my son's Q6600 running at 3.4Ghz stayed under 45C most of the time, even after several hours of intense gaming. That's good enough for me.

SI-128SE is a good cooler. I only have mine on an E6700, but even with minimal airflow and stuffed in a cramped mATX case with severely limited airflow, it's still able to keep my temps around 47C at full load (3.4GHz w/ 1.35V).

Yeah, I figure my original SI-128 will be slightly less able, but only slightly. If I'm wrong, I'll end up buying myself another SI-128SE as I was very impressed with it on my son's system.

Depends on the floor guy. Some don't care others do since they make commission on the sale. Read the last 10 pages for all the tricks. They just want to upsell you something you don t need unless you need a new MB. Floor guy I got was very pushy and several others got the same guy. However, they must sell it to you since there is no mention on the web site and the CS reps say it can be sold without bundle.

Didn't run across the bullying, but I did get a P5k. So far...less than thrilled. The damn IDE connecter is in the most useless place EVER! And I'm not ditching two perfectly good optical drives because of Asus' boneheaded error.
All in all, not a bad upgrade from a Brisbane. ~3.2ghz right now, a good 125% oc. Don't want to push it higher than 1.3v though.

Has anyone ever had problems returning open CPUs to microcenter?
Cobalt2112
03-11-2008, 02:47 PM
When I was @ MicroCenter, I asked MavAlpha that very same question in case the CPU did not meet to my expectations.
He told me that you're basically SOL in trying to return open-box items for $$$ refund. You may however, return it under the premise that the item is 'defective' or DOA, but it would be for a similar item. So they may not accept returning an E8400 you bought a weeka go for $ to buy a Q6600 (however, I may be wrong and overstated)

Just purchased @ MicroCenter in Richardson, TX. They had the Q6600s in a glass case new the BYOPC area and I think I could have rummaged around looking for the right stepping had I known what to be looking for but I didn't. They had about 1/3 of the case full of Q6600s - probably 20 or 30 in there.
I just looked at the chip, saw it said SLACR and figured hey I have no clue so whatever. :)

Grrr.....couldn't resist. :( ;)
Got the Q6600 with the core that Xstremesystems.org apparently has had good results with (G0, SLACR, L737B, packed Nov 2007), the eVGA 780i board, 2GB XMS2 since they were out of the Dominator and any other higher-end RAM, a Zalman 9700 and an Antec 650 Trio power supply since my TrueControl is old enough to not have any of the proper connectors, but has much better amperage on all the rails  Meh. $791 later and I've got it together and am transferring data to a new drive so this can be an almost totally new build.
Meh. Probably shouldn't have done it, but it's all together and I have some tweaking to do... Already had it at 3.6Ghz for an hour or so before it crashed while I was doing a bunch of tests. Back to stock until I really have a clue as to what the hell I'm doing. I've been running AMD since '97-98 and have never built an Intel machine for myself.
I ran into the person who bought the L744A469 from Tustin MC, and it turned out to be a so so overclocker. It needs 1.50V to do 3.6Ghz.

Heh, I did the same thing. Just checked for SLACR and I was off!
Now, I'm a noob to C2Q's, but unless you're going for a record OC, generally any SLACR will be ok. I've got a L744B, and it's up to 3.25@1.4v. If I had better cooling, I could go higher. If you're having stability issues, up the volts. Just make sure you've got some good cooling and you shouldn't have an issue.

It's only a 50 dollar savings cvinh, are you sure you want to waste gas + time just to save $50 dollars?
Archaea
03-16-2008, 04:02 PM
that's a very subjective question.
If one makes $50 a day $6 an hour times 8 hours a day =$48 dollar - he has to work an entire day so yes he won't mind driving 2 hours to save a day's wages
If one makes $50 an hour then no of course it doesn't make sense. I'm cheap and time on the weekends is largely free - so I'd probably drive myself an hour and a half total to save $50 bucks.

Two hours of driving at say, 55MPH on the highway or freeway.
Average car gets between 18-25MPG. So we're talking 5-6 gallons of gas, at 3.50+ a gallon. Twenty bucks in gas alone.

Went to the Richardson, TX store yesterday.... 5 in stock according to the salesman, 4 going into store-built systems, 1 was missing. Will try calling in a couple of days to see if they get a restock. If anyone in the DFW area happens to drop by, check on the inventory levels... don't want to drive out there unless I have to. :)

Hi,
Chances are that stock will be replenished by 45nm parts. IOW, once they are gone, that's all folks. I am sure there will be a price drop on other websites on the 65NM Quads unless you really want the 45 NM parts. Since none of us really want the next best thing around here.... :)
Besides isn't it March 17th when the 45nm CPUs are officially released in full force or is it just the Quad versions tomorrow?

You're talking about $10 in tax, $20 in gas. So you save $20 for driving a few hours.
I'd spend that $20 and spend it enjoying my time off if it meant that much.
Then again if he was visiting relatives, then I can see why it would be worth it!
