Sweet, $250 for an 8gig! The opinions in that thread were mixed about if you could just buy one and then unlock it or put your own sim in it if you already had ATT. Anyone already have ATT and just upgrading to an iphone?

Actually it says to use the SS# 999-99-9999 when activating your iPhone to get offered the GoPhone pay as you go option without a contract. So if you already have AT&T, then you can do this and then just pop your current sim card in.

This deal is now ONLINE.
I'm about to order a refurb 8GB iPhone for $249 (w/ free shipping) directly from ATT. Says you can pick your service after you get the phone but I'm going to unlock it to use on T-mobile.

You don't have to use AT&T. You can unlock it to work with tmobile. When you buy the phone in the store they don't do the activation so once you leave you are free to unlock it. Depending on the sales person you get they may ask for some of your info.

Yes and no. You would still "Jailbreak" and "Activate" it but you would not have to unlock it. You would have access to every function on the device *except* visual voice mail. Visual voice mail allows you to see the voicemails and select which one to review first. If you have an iphone either on another carrier, or if you have an iphone on AT&T - you will still have voicemail - it is just server based like you are used to now.

You can't. The iphone is a GSM device (AT&T/Cingular and T-Mobile).

I've played around with my bud's Iphone and it was a very good experience. The interface is sleek, net speed acceptable, and overall a nice little device.

I wouldn't pay $600 bucks for ANY phone. But, $250 for something that will also replace my Ipod nano ... i'll jump on it .... and i did!

Now i'm looking for an easy to understand tutorial on how to unlock this for TMobile .... anyone know of any?

I've been thinking about an iPhone, deals like this make it harder to resist. Can anyone who is a current ATT customer w/ iPhone answer some questions?

1. Does "hacktivation" really let you switch to the iPhone without contract extension? You get the $20 data plan and life is good?

2. If you jailbreak/unlock the iPhone and put your current ATT SIM card in, I assume the iPhone will freak out a bit when there is no data connection available for it to use. (My account, anyway, has no data plan.) OR, does ATT give you the data and just charge a ridiculous amount for it?

I am in a family plan, which means iPhone is just +$20/mo for data... but the contract extension is not acceptable since it extends everyone on the family plan and not just the new iPhone user.

Millions of thanks for leads. I haven't found these answers yet anywhere.

I don't think so, I had a corporate discount also, but I lost it when I upgraded to the iphone... I haven't called them to really talk about it, but I'm pretty sure they aren't applicable to these plans.

Not sure what hacktivation is - but if you jailbreak, and activate it (no need to unlock it if you are using AT&T) it will work just fine - with the exception being you will not have visual voicemail.

The phone is setup to use AT&T's data proxy - so it probably would charge you a bit more than someone with a plan.

Regarding your plan specific question - call 611 and ask them what it would do to your account if you simplay add data to one / all of the lines. I would not think that doing that would start the timer over on your 2 year commitment.

So i have a service with ATT right now. If i order this phone, i connect it to iTunes and input the SS# as 999-99-9999 and it will go thru Pay as you go plan. Then insert my existing sim card and it should work like a regular plan right??? Tell me if i'm wrong or not.

you can activate it via itunes with the pay as you go plan first, then i think you can jailbreak it with ziphone and use your sim card. NOT SURE though

I am sure, however, that you can just jailbreak it with ziphone and then insert your current sim card into it and it will work, without needing to activate it with itunes. the sim card must be a cingular 64k or newer.

Oh sweet. Thanks. I didn't really want to go thru the hassle of activating it thru iTunes then canceling and all that stuff. The ziphone and inserting the sim works for me. Can't wait:D

I wonder if they're coming out with the 3G soon? I also wonder why there are so many refurbished iPhones. Is the failure rate that high?

Installed itunes
Inserted my old att sim card

Unlocked in couple of mins

Soon after, detected the network and dispayed cingular
Made a test call successfully.

The iPhone's $20/mo plan is why it is sweet--adding unlimited data to another plan costs a lot more, like $50 or so. I am sure that kind of adjustment won't reset the contract but it sucks for other reasons.

Is it possible to turn off the iPhone's data feed in a control panel or something, and make it into a dumb phone?

Oh, someone else said you needed a newer SIM card to jailbreak and recycle your SIM... I am probably screwed. My Cing/ATT phone is years old.

A refurb could be a return from anything being wrong, whether a bad cable/AC Adapter to the whole thing going to the crapper.

Also check out iPlus since it uses a Bootloader (3.9 Fakeboot) that can be reverted back to 4.6 through software means. The bootloader ZiPhone uses cannot. I use my iPhone on T-Mobile with no problems after using iPlus. iPlus does have just a Jailbreak/Activation mode like ZiPhone.

Picked mine up in store by Madison & 46 in NY. They still had a few left as of Tuesday. Got the 8GB. Feels more solid than I expected yet I think I could break it at any time. I'm a Crakberry so using this takes some getting used to. I'm not giving up my 8700c and Curve though!

As much as the touchscreen is fantastic, I hate having to look down on the touchpad to see what I'm typing. From what I've read online, I'll just have to get used to it.

I received mine today, updated the firmware and then unlocked the phone using Ziphone. By far the easiest way to unlock a phone that I've seen. So much easier than my 8525's. Playing with the iphone right now and its GUI is pretty snappy. It's definitely a keeper.

Just got mine too. Ziphone is an amazing program. Extremely easy and noob proof. Absolutely fantastic.

Got mine tonight. Updating it to 1.1.14 firmware as we speak. Darn thing looks brand new and the only way you'd ever know it was refurbished, is it didn't come in the normal retail box but an AT&T box. Cradle, charger, USB cord, crappy earbuds and and polishing cloth were all included just as a new one does. Awesome deal for sure. I still won't by a Mac, but this thing is cool as heck.

For those that missed it, I wouldn't worry about it. I'll bet you anything, they have the sale again. It's not like they ran out of refurbies considering the Apple store has them available right now albeit for $100 more.

I was reading on the fatwallet forums, and apparently those that used an American Express card to pay for it, had a few problems getting AMEX to authorize the charge and that delayed a few of those people from having theirs shipped out yet. I will say that this morning, I had a fraud email from my CC company requesting I contact them to verify the transaction as well. I've heard that in order to prevent fraud, AT&T was test charging the credit cards used to purchase them six times before actually charging them! That is all heresay of course, but that would explain my email this morning from my mastercard company as well as the hassle people who used their AMEX cards are having too. Kind of strange if you ask me.

For those that received the backorder notice, you might double check with your CC company to make sure your charge went through. Otherwise, call ATT and ask for the online sales customer service and not the normal customer service (i've heard they are two different departments). Once called, people are saying they received a shipping confirmation shortly after. Good luck.

BTW, huge props to the OP for the heads up on this deal. Alot of us are benefiting from it and we appreciate it.

Yeah props to admin :)
Just curious as a noob here are there any short falls or things i should be aware of if I use Ziphone to unlock the Iphone?
Really all I want for now is the Ipod touch functionality until my Verizon contract runs out in 2 months ( and I want the phone to work then)

I checked my CC Visa and ATT has already charged me. I also saw that there was a previous charge from ATT in the amount of 1.00$. I'm guessing that was one of the test charge.

It would be nice if you guys take a picture of the box, iphone, accessories, etc.....

Anyone wondering these have a full year's warranty and are eligible for Applecare if you are so inclined. I checked today at the Apple store on my lunch break.

I got mine today.

I first used iPlus to jailbreak, then inserted my old Cingular sim in. No service.

I then tried restoring 1.1.4 and then not jailbreaking, but unlocking (-u command).

Four minutes later, I called my home phone and it worked! I then hooked it up to my MacBook and dragged some songs over. The iPhone has a really snappy GUI, although it sometimes takes a few seconds for the accelerometer to work while Safari is loading.

I'm still in high school though and my mother won't let me get text "since I will screw around in class" so I'm not really using the iPhone to its full potential. ehhhh

I told her that it is necessary to step my game up at university next year but she still won't budge.

I get scholarships with really no motivation from my parents and I can't get text because I would abuse it in class. lol

I picked one of these up on a whim because I figured if I didn't like it I could flip it on ebay and at least get what I paid. Coming from an ATT Tilt, I think I'm going back. The GUI is awesome, and the touch screen is incredible compared to the Tilt. I was worried about doing all controls with the screen as opposed to having more buttons with the Tilt, but the screen is very precise even when using a finger. However, I can't get used to texting on the phone. I really don't have overly fat fingers, but I always manage to click the wrong letter when I am trying to type, and without tactile feedback it is very difficult to look at what you are typing instead of the fingers and keypad on the screen. The build quality is very nice, and the web browser is ten times better than the Tilt's, but with as much as I text and send emails, I think the iPhone is going FS pretty soon.

Mini review:

I came from an 8525 (similar to Tilt w/o touchscreen though) and in my mind, there is no comparison. If you need a full featured smartphone that allows you to work on the go, then absolutely, the Windows Mobile phones are better suited to this need. If however, you only need a smartphone for email and web browsing, then I can't recommend the iPhone enough. Call quality is excellent, the GUI is awesome and flawless, and the addtional features (browser, email, camera) make it worthy of the price we paid for them. Add in a full featured 5th or 6th generation (not sure which it is considered) Ipod to boot, and we are talking about a steal here considering all this phone can do. Heck, the new Razr is $250 and this thing blows it away IMO.

I have two gripes about this phone. One is, the stupid proprietary connector for the headphone jack. It is a 3.5mm size jack, but the way it is recessed into the phone, you will have to buy an adapter if you want to use your own headphones vs. the crappy included earbuds. Two is only a gripe because of how good it looks in that you better get a protective sleeve for it or some other case if you don't want it to get scratched up.

Is it worth $400 for a new 8gb model? IMO, no, not unless you are a stuck up metrosexual Apple fan. Is it worth $250 for a refurbished model? Absolutely no question. To get a phone that has the same abilities as this phone, it would cost about the same amount save for a Blackjack or certain Blackberries. And all of those don't have the Ipod and the browser that is 100X better than Opera or Mobile Explorer IMO.

If this deal pops up again which I am sure it will, then I would tell anyone to jump on it. Don't forget, these things were $600 last summer!

I first found typing to be a pain in the ass, but after experimenting I found that by practicing for about half an hour and eventually using two thumbs I could type pretty quick. I wouldn't sell the iPhone yet until you have typed as fast as you can, because I thought the keyboard sucked at first too, but eventually I just figured it out.

Yeah I felt the same way initially. When I first started typing on the phone I absolutely hated the keyboard. After using it for a couple of days I'm slowly starting to get better at typing with it.

go to the AT&T website and look through refurbished phones, if it is in stock then just put in your credit card info and that's it. no need to have a wireless account or activate it then, as the iphone is activated at home through itunes.

Faster non-wifi iPhone internet. 3G is faster than EDGE.

I don't even have a data plan so I don't even care to be honest. I bought an iPhone because there is wifi pretty much everywhere, I sold my iPod a few months ago, and because the SDK was just released.
