that'd be sweet for a non HD HTPC since it has the onboard dvi/vga. thanks for the heads up

How does that video chip compare to the Nvidia 6150? I ran an HD HTPC off that GPU very well. Had to use overlay mode, of course, I wasn't putting 1080i through the 3d system.
Anyway, this ATI part being newer I would hope would be at least the equal of the 6150.

Are you sure? I know the chipset is as a whole, but x1250 class graphics is below an x1300, which I think was somewhat behind in it's generation (and the 6150 is a more modern integrated solution with SM3).
Even with cheapo integrated.... and even being ECS, it's a good deal for a super cheap build. If you really want hardware decoding.... a different board may be a better choice, or just a $50 3450.

the 690g is better. a bit faster in pretty much anything, but i don't think there's really any chipset good enough to do 1080p HD video stuff well... yet.

If I'm seeing the same reviews you quoted...... the 690g uses more CPU playing back HD video, and it's x1250 performs under the 6150 in every app except games..... which doesn't really make sense..... but almost doesn't matter in how poor all of them perform.
The 690 chipset doesn't actually take the lead in ANY test there..... except it uses less power.....
