Haven't had the best of luck over here (Maple Grove, MN).
Gone multiple times.. Rainbow Foods (a grocery) through out all their display, picked up some cool stuff to hang on the wall. Found an (at least) 150 lb wooden ... center of some sort from behind Old Navy, friend is using it as a tv center now. That's about all our luck. Tons of dumpsters, usually just find smelly junk, boxes full of trash, or stuff that no one wants. We've got quite a few places to dive, too. A few strip malls, an Office max, two furniture stores, misc. other stores. No luck so far yet, gone maybe 5 times all in the same month. Haven't been for awhile.
Any tips on how to scare up some good items? Sorry, haven't read the whole thread. As a matter of fact, I haven't read a DD thread since yoda643's old FAQ before it was unstickied a long time ago.

PIcked up a nice cart.

Very fricken nice, Man. Holds all my DVDs, CDs, Video Games, My mostly played consoles, and my modem and router quite nicely, with plenty of room for more shit!

Hey you're in Maple Grove to, cool. Lived there since 1991, but now I'm in Mankato for college during the school year.
I never could find any good dumpsters in Maple Grove. I only looked a few times downtown, but came up empty handed every time. Maple Grove Square right outside Osseo might have some dumpsters that aren't compactors like most of the down town ones are.

Yea, I have been wanting to hit up Central FL for awhile. I know UCF has a nice engineering dept. -- always thought some nice bits might end up in their dumpster.
Anyone in the Orlando area ever found some good spots? Maybe get a gathering together? Most of my friends are afraid to dive due to the possible legal implications, I on the other hand dont care.

Union County NJ representing. I've gotten tons of great stuff when my stepdad worked as a janitor at a big office building. Monitors, momtherboard connection kits. Whole computes, leather chairs etc. USB drives as well.
That ended a while ago though... :(
And now, I can't find a decent place around me that doesnt use compactors. Staples around me don't, but I have no use for the old staircase they threw out, and some staples rack things. Have yet to see a chair or anything IN the dumpster.... So anyone round me know of any good spots or wanna team up?

Good find tonight. Panasonic KX-P7100 duplexing laser printer. When I first turned it on the error light was flashing so I figured that's why it was in the dumpster. Anyway, after playing around with it a bit I got the error light to go away and come online. I ran the fuser clean procedure and now it is working beautifully. Seems like it still has quite a bit of toner left. Only problem, though, is that it is a gdi printer so it only works in windows. Fucking shit. I haven't decided if I'm going to try to sell it or just set up a windows box as a print server. It's a pretty nice printer. I also found a couple reams of some kind of special paper. They're still out in the ex so I haven't looked at them yet.

My only Mom and Pop computer store shares a dumpster with about three other business in the strip. And it looks like people from the apartment complex near it throw ther garbage in there to. I don't think I'm going to have much luck there. But I think the garbage goes out Wednesday around there so I'm going to check this Tuesday. Just maybe something will be in there. And all the other computer stores Best Buy and Office Max are a no go because of covered schute dumpster covers. I'm going to cruse around on garbage day though in the housing areas and see if anyone set anything out next to there garbage can.

Not exactly dumpster diving, but I bought a CRT from a thrift store thinking it was 17", just as a spare, since it was only $15. When I got home and saw it next to another 17" I realized it's the 19" now in my signature! Only problem was that it was dark, but I was able to adjust that using the ATI Control Panel.

Over at the CU Boulder engineering center, there are two common areas with pop machines. As you might expect, college students drink a lot of pop, particularly Mountain Dew and Pepsi. If you go through the recycle bins, you can find a lot of empty Pepsi and Dew bottles.
Anyone thinking what I'm thinking?
Well, several weeks ago, I went over there on a Monday morning and managed to get about 250 orange "Every 10 Minutes" caps. Each cap is good for an entry in the "Every 10 Minutes" contest to win an XBOX 360. Approximate odds of winning are 1 in 2000.
So far, I've collected 1150 caps. No XBOX 360 yet, but we'll see.
By the way: this tactic works even better for the iTunes promos - every three bottles has a code, and by dumpster (recycling, actually) diving, you can get 20-30 codes in about 10 minutes.

And you might be able to get like 20~30 bucks for that many cans and bottles at a recycling center.

Just as a side note...I don' t think it does you any good that you have 1150. From the FAQ on the game site: "There is no limit to the number of Codes that may be entered each day, however there is a maximum of 500 Codes that can be entered for the entire promotion."
Anything that puts you over 500 though, if you'd be willing, you can send to me (over e-mail, AIM, PM, whatever).

I found quite a bit lately so I suppose I should update. A couple days ago I found about 10 old computers. About half of them were k6/2-350s, so that's not too too bad. Nothing spectacular, though. In any case, I was pretty excited to find that many at one time. I've also found quite a few monitors lately. I doubt many of them work, but I use them mainly for mischievous purposes so it doesn't really matter if they work or not. Not sure if I already posted this or not, but a couple weeks ago I got a Panasonic KX-P7100 laser printer with builtin automatic duplexer. It shot out an error when I first plugged it in, but I just had to reset it and now it works just fine. Shitty thing is it is a windows printer(uses the windows gdi subsystem to render pages to be sent to the printer) and I don't have any windows computers, so I'm out of luck. I have a feeling I might have already posted that, so whatever.
Unfortunately it's rained the past couple days so that kills any prospects. I don't mind diving in the snow(that's actually kinda fun), but soaking wet trash just isn't any fun.

Amen to that. A lot of places that I dive at have a bad habit of not closing the lid of their dumpsters (if they have lids) and all of the stuff gets kinda ruined. Ya never know though, I had a monitor that was rained on. Let it sit and dry for a week, turned it on and it was just fine.
Today I went when it was raining and only found a bunch of earthlink cd's. Going back tomorow to see if they threw out anything overnight.

Whats the etiquette when you catch someone dumpster diving at your business? I had to go in late one night and caught someone sifting through our neighbors trash after obviously having already gone through ours (there was trash everywhere). I had to walk by their car to get into my office and the female passenger simply said hi (oddly she was in the passenger seat while her husband/bf/whatever was in the dumpster). I wasn't exactly sure what to do, call the cops or what. Didn't really matter since I forgot the password to my offices alarm and the cops came anyways. I didn't say anything about the trash because I didn't have time to fill out a form or whatever cops would make me do. It wouldn't have been anything to worry about if they hadn't made the mess they did. Its happened once more to our neighbors since. They're an AV place. I think we should just probably out a padlock on the bin, I guess.

Thus far, I have found...
A projection TV, 54"? something around there.
5-6 DVD players / VCRs
3? computers, including a p4, some with GF4s etc.
11-12 mirrors
Bags and bags and bags and bags of clothing, most of it very decent
Many pairs of good dress shoes
A couple of kegs of beer (not empty...drank it, tasty stuff)
20? empty kegs which I returned for deposit ($7 per)
Brand new candleholder
Tons of paper / empty notebooks
Complete pottery tea set (cute lil cups etc.)
That's about it for now...I'm sure I forgot some.

Best time to dive is after and before they close and open. And you can get in trouble if you break locks, cables, the person is feeling evil, etc. Just use common sense. And read the entire thread.
Today I went, but it was the same as the previous 2 days. The thing is there repaving the back parking lot so they moved the dumpster away so now they havent added anything.

I agree with chaostic, if they're not making a mess, don't worry about it. Though if they are leaving your trash on the street, they are not following proper DD etiquette, which says that they must clean up the mess they make :) If you do catch them again, you should probably say something like, "Hey, I don't mind if you are Diving back here, but please just clean up if you make a mess."

Man I found a huge box full of shit a couple nights ago. Cards, cables, power supplies, motherboards. There were a few agp video cards, tons of NICs, some sound cards, an old raylan 8 port ethernet/1port fiber hub, pcmcia 10/100 ethernet card, some headset walkie talkies(professional ones, not toys), and a shitton of cables. Oh and I also found a nice panasonic dot matrix printer. I went back last night to see if there was anything I missed(I was kinda not in the greatest state of mind when I first went), but there was some dude standing in one of the dumpsters so I left. Then I think I actually had a damn dream about it last night. That's pretty sad.

It was from a local computer/office equipment shop(it's not part of a chain or anything). They're my main source of good finds. They usually throw out at least a couple huge copiers a week, but those are a bitch to get out and I've pulled so many over the past couple years that I don't really need any more parts. :D A lot of the stuff I pull from there is either broken or too old to be worth anything, but every so often I'll find something awesome.
Today I found a paper cutter made by x-acto. pretty nice, New in box. It has a damaged stickeer that says opened on it, but the origional seal is still on

I have 4 large dumpsters for my community and people also leave stuff out they dont want. Last night I found 2 a little older cell phones in nice condition. Pretty sweet. Hopefully i will find some better stuff in the future.

I'm starting to give up on the chains. Most of them have compactors and the ones that don't either don't throw away any good stuff or totally destroy it when they do. The way to go, like jpmkm said, is the smaller computer and office shops. Ya gotta get the places that are big enough to have good stuff to throw away, but poor enough to not have a compactor.

NYC is an awesome place to go dumpster diving. Although most would expect to find good stuff in the City area (Mid to downtown Manhattan), most of the the things I've found were in the Ghetto lol. I usually just see fully configured computer cases (Most being older Pent 3/Athlon Gateways & Compaqs) laying right on the sidewalk or near garbage cans. havn't made an effort to do some dumpster diving as of late. Im not as lucky on the computer side of things, but i usualyl hit the jackpot on video games & consoles lol. I find endless amounts of Sega Genesis & SNES's. Found a few Playstation 1's, plenty of broken up handhelds, etc. My most sucess seems to be the N64 oddly. Only found 1 console, but I find alot of games & pads for it. Biggest find was a Sega Dreamcast with an Interact Racing wheel with it XD. Was inside a Gateway box.

Holy shit guys. I just found a 160 WD hard drive. It seems to work perfectly. It was ntfs formatted and had xmen evolution on it. Blasted that off, though, and made an ext3 fs on it, so I'm good to go. This is my best find in a while.
edit: not sure if I posted this earlier, but I found a pci radeon 9200SE a while back and I thought it was a dud(it used to just output gibberish), but today I actually got it working. I now have a quad monitor setup. :D

i've asked my friend about that stuff since he's a garbage man. He said it wouldn't want to take that stuff at all, because most of the computer cases have cockroaches and other bugs in them. Though he's yet to see anything good yet here in SI, or in Manhattan.
I'm not sure if he went uptown or in the bronx though.

Last night was my first time dumpster diving, the first bag I ripped open had about 40 various cell phone accessories still in their packages (belt clips, chargers, leather cases). Other than that I found like 50 copies of Norton Internet Security 2005, some movies, a mechanical manicure set (woo!), some other random crap, and best of all some old ladies blank checkbook!
Needless to say I'm going to be hooked on dumpster diving if I keep scoring that big.

What city are you? There is no fence so the one I go to is never locked. They just recently did construction in the back and had to move the dumpster away so on the loading dock is where they keep all the trash.
Im going there again after school today. I saw a desk that looks good and they are probally throwing that out tomorow.

Yesterday when i went there was two men standing in the back wearing normal cloth's. As soon as we went near the dumpster, they both took out there cell phones. I told my friends and we backed away. About a few minutes later some staples employees came out. We went back later and those two guys were still talking to the staples employees. This was weird. Anyways the dumpster only had two black bags in in which are from the apartments next door. I think those guys were the people whole just paved the parkinglot back there and the staples employees were looking for my careless friends who open up packages of business cards and started throwing them around the parking in the autumn wind along with the autumn rain causing a mess. I wasnt there, but someone told me they were doing that so I went and yelled at them at school today.

Not a real dive, but give me a break I was in a suit! I was walking by a dumpster outside of one of the school's buildings and saw a stripped down case in there being covered in snow. There was a couple sticks of RAM in there plus a new processor for an old machine I'm going to turn into a music server. Anybody know what socket a celeron 433 would have used about 6 or 7 years ago? It's so old I can't even remember. Once the parts dry, and I find time to go out to the storage unit and get the machine, I'll see if they are any good.

well, first off, is it legal down there?
and second off, they after everyone reads about it, everyone in florida will be in dumpsters looking for stuff which they will probally cause a mess which will make florida pass a law making it illegal or the stores will all get compactors killing the idea of dumpster diving.
After everyonein the school found out what me and my friend found, they all go looking for stuff too.

That's really the thing that bothers me about dumpster diving articles. I'm not trying to sound like an elitest bastard or anything(far from it), but it's nicer when not many people know about it. As soon as someone prints an article and mentions that someone found a laptop in a dumpster, suddenly everyone thinks they can find cool shit and they all go out and do it, ruining my prospects(and usually making a mess of things in the process).
Sadly, my explorer has been fucked up for a couple weeks(finally took it in tonight), so I have not been diving lately. I'm home for a couple weeks, so hopefully I can get some good diving in around here once I get my car back(we just moved out to the middle of nowhere, so there's absolutely no chance of me being able to walk somewhere. :( )

Mr. Otown I would agree with some of the other replys. Once you make a story of this little known treasure everyone is going to want to plunder every trash can and alleyway.
The few of us that do do this are respectful to the property owners by not making a mess and returning trash to the containers, as well we seek no trouble from the law. In Florida it is known as abandoned property. hopefully you will decide not to mess up the balance of things.

Go to the Distributed Computing subforum here at the [H], we can give you all the info you could ever need or want. A basic summary though: it is a distributed computing project that breaks up work normally done by supercomputers into researching how proteins fold in order to understand how diseases like cancer, Parkinson's, etc. come to be and work, so we can find a cure for them. Anyone's basic computer can take part using only spare CPU cycles and a little internet bandwidth from time to time (to send and receive work)...a very worthwhile cause, you should check it out, again, in the DC subforum here at the [H].

It varies by location. You'll have to check to see if your city has a law or an ordinace or something against dumpster diving.

I think some people make up items that they have found.
you should try to pic everything. I understand if you do not pic a letter opener and a CD rack. But if you find a leather office chair, computer desk in good shape, Flat panel, or hydraulic press you should be able to share your post with a pic as well.

Yes, as long as you are not breaking any locks or jumping any gates. And remember you still have to deal with that pesky law called Loitering and prowling.
Just leave everything clean or cleaner than the way you found it and you should be fine, and if you get pulled over by police do not lie about what you are doing...tell em you're looking for thrown away junk.

i haven't really dumpster dived in awhile.
i usually just looked for wood or metal.make a good score on the last dive by my house.nice piece of wood you could use as a base for a floor, just with some firecracker marks from the local kids.
i got a nice radio that was on the way to be throw out cause it wasn't needed anymore.
some cleaning and tuner cleaner in the knobs, fixed the bent antenna and it was fine.
Radio (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v179/Lt.Doomsday/Radio.jpg)
For the guy that said most of the people lie, your probally wrong. At the local dumpster I dig out off, you find most of the items that people list here. Most of the time the desks are probally from the dumpster as well as the chairs. A few days ago my friend and I found a chair in its box with all the parts.

Some of that stuff is pretty old, but a few items are quite recent (The Movies, Nero 7).

weeeeeeel i suppose all those details WERE lost with the previous couple hundred page thread 2 years ago.
CompUSSR dumpster
Southcenter Mall area
Tukwila, Washington (THE STATE!)
alley to the rear of the strip, from the north end go past the Best Buy car stereo installation bay. The area opens up a little and you'll see the semi loading ramp for Compussr at an angle to the road, the cardboard dumpster just past that, and a 6 or 8 yard capacity green dumpster past that.
WATCH OUT for Mall Security. They are pissants about it and have threatened me with report for trespassing. (I actually have had a cop stop and chat with me, HE didnt give a dam) I tend to AVOID parking by the dumpster and walk there during darker times.
i dont hit it often anymore, but it used to be 'returns' and the tech repair/upgrade/service center disposal (also found HDs, MBs, CPUs, printers, DVD drives, CD drives, ad infinatum 2 ad nauseum. Sometimes they try to break things, many times not.

nope i seriously doubt the 'employee gambit'. most are obviously opened and tagged with some kinda 'return date' sticker and frequently presence of RMA tags stuck 2 them state the condition and reason for return.
honestly, if i went twice a week i would get a haul similar at least once a month

This was my night dumpster diving. Hit up a local Staples, Best Buy, Radio Shack and assorted other stores. Got some good random finds!
Radio Shack 3 channel intercom system in box, works
Radio Shack metal detector frame
Wayfinder V2000L Car Electronic compass/thermometer w/ mounting bracket and DC adapter
Random extension/electrical cords
Best Buy had a bunch of TVs and appliances around the dumpster area. Tried to carry off a 27" color TV but it was FREAKING HEAVY. Dropped it on the screen, didn't shatter but scraped up enough that it wasn't worth it to take home. Pity :(

Bah, fucking cops..
A buddy of mine and I decided to hit a local Staples / Best Buy after making a killing the last time we went...but yeah, apparently one of the employees in the Best Buy (closing up @ 11 PM) saw us and before we knew it, a police car rolled up behind us.
The "looking for boxes" story worked, but yeah, he took our driver's license numbers...was a bit of an asshole about the whole situation, too..."If you ask at Giant Eagle they'll give you boxes, this place hires a private company to ship away their trash."
Left a bad taste in my mouth...we were in a lower class area... and those kinds of cops are the worst.
However, on a better note, the first time we hit Staples it was a jackpot;
50pack Memorex 16X DVD+R's

i went scouting, and found some prospects, bestbuy had 4 17-19inch monitors on a pallet, didnt get a chance to get them construction ppl were around, that and checked out staples and compusa dumpsters, but no Dive yet, maybe tonight.(im intrigued about the monitors but def. have my doubts, ill find out soon enough, maybe if theyre still there tonight.)

I'm trying to plan a dive tonight, anyone tell me anything I might be forgetting, just waiting on a partner to tag along, I don't really like flying solo DD'ing.
Checklist:
Gloves
Truck ;)
Flashlight
Knife
Boots
Forgetting anything?
Possible stops: BB (meh hopefully they might not have chunked something good in the compactor), CompUSSR, Staples, Office Depot, Circuit City, a few Mom & Pop's.
def hit up staples. That is where I get all of my finds. Your list seems good, but if you have a camera, bring it along and take pics of your find. Good Luck
HvyMtl
01-16-2006, 12:28 PM
ok thing to take while diving, your list:
Gloves
Truck
Flashlight
Knife
Boots
Needs a few things - the gloves - get a pair of work gloves and then put a pair of those yellow dish gloves over them - makes it hard for you to get cut, and won't allow wet "stuff" to get on your hands.
Wear disposable clothes - wear blue jeans or some type of heavy, tear proof pants.
Wear long sleeves or some shirt that is also tough to cut. Dumpsters are nasty places.
flattened boxes - why? In case of Cops, you need a cover story - looking for boxes to help friend move... and you might want the boxes to put stuff in
knee pads might be a good idea too, as you can bang your kees easily getting in/out of dumpster...
ALWAYS go with a second person - you might get stuck in the dumpster, you might get hurt, you might find something that takes two to get out of the dumpster, you may need a look out in some not so nice neighborhoods... ( or for not so nice cops...)

I havn't yet but I think you should have some pretty good luck. My advice would be to try office buildings if you can. I have seen a few 19" monitors in the dumpster at my office before but honestly didnt need a monitor at the time and didnt want to risk any complications with security at my place of work since they have 2 cameras on the dumpster. Friend of mine scored something like 10 P3 computers from her office dumpster when some engineering office upgraded or something. All of them still have win2k and AutoCAD on them too.

Maybe you should not do it if you're going to think of it in that light. You should not do anything against the law.
Just remember to be decent and put things back and don't break ANYTHING.
This will lead to a fruitful life for you and for others after you.

Friday night I hit up:
BigLots - nothing but garbage (real garbage) and a bum's bed...soaked.
Comp USA - freshly dumped dumpster but found a 2 drrawer stackable CD storage box (in box was a return fro a crack in the front door...still useable and nice)
Some mom and pop computer stores - nothing major, dead PSU's and crap. Took a motherboard plate though. I collect them for some reason )
Staples - absolutely nothing, even though the dumpster was overflowing with cardboard.
OfficeMax - (12) 3 ring binders, (5) 2 packs of highlighters unopened, (6) 2 packs of glow in the dark erasers unopened (who uses erasers in the dark?????), (4) packages of vinyl letters unopened, (3) daytimer note inserts unopened, (2) staple pullers upopened, a 12" paper cutter missing the blade, (3) magazine holders, and an unopened case of individual pot size Foldgers coffee bags (debating drinking....may donate to work...make them think I care about their sorry asses), (15) assorted colors Sharpie markers, (2) clear plastic desk paper trays and an EPSON S1+ Digital projector!!! I was like SCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRE!!! I picked it up and said to myself, hmmm...awefully light....and then realized....it was a demo model. Empty! BAH!! I should sure OfficeMax for the mental durress...Ohhwell, looks cool still....
I had not been out diving in a while and that night got it back in my blood, plus I have allways gotten decent scores out of the CompUSA dumpster, and that night the meager haul left me feeling empty. So, I went back Sunday night!! I fidgured the weekend returns might be good. The dumpster was full!! There were about five smashed pc cases and motherboards, a binch of CDROM drives, some floppy drives, three Epson Printer/copier/scanners and an HP one two. A smashed set of Moto Talkabout walkies, about five smashed keyboards, and some other misc software....all smashed...and smashed good. All I kept was the moto batteries (have a pair at home), some WinXP home Certificate of Authenticities (keycodes), misc thumbscrews off the cases, a USB cable, a few misc. power bricks, about 20 Epson Inkjet cartidges and a copy of Battlefield 2 CD's are still great....keycode ripped off the booklet though .
So, all in all it was a healthy weekend and a good way to get back into it. I think from now on, I will just stick with the roadside scores and the bignamers and be picky about what I take. I dont want to piss off my new wife with a garage full of stuff (I just spent the Saturday before last cleaning it out).
A few questions now:
1) Are the WinXP C.O.A.'s sellable? Legally? I know that you need the certain "flavor" of OEM CD to get it to accept though, they are easily fouund on the web too.
2) Does OfficeDepot still trade used injet cartidges for a ream of paper?

Here is my dumpster diving story. I was working near a telemarketing company that was going out of business and noticed they were throwing everything thing out. The dumpster was huge. I went back that night and loaded up. I found (12) Sony Tape Recorders (30) Red/Black Cotton Office Chairs On Rollers (4) Office Phones With 10 Lines On Each Phone (10) Operator Headphones (12) RGB Monitors and bunch of keyboards, tables, cubical walls,a load of printing paper. I grabbed all recorders and two chairs before the security (rent-a-cop) came around and told me to leave. When I was leaving I happen to look back in my rear view mirror. The rent-a-cop who told me to leave was looking in the dumpster. Bas-tar-do! ! ! But it's all good. Because I sold the tape recorders $150.00, not bad 20 mins of gathering.:D

When i was a kid we jumped in and found our first porn mag, we all hovered around that for weeks.
Then I found some left over yellow paint for parking lot lines. i painted the drivers side of a car that never moved. It turns out there was an owner after all. He wasnt pissed. But not sure how mom got me out of that one.

I live in LA, CA area, anyone else?????
I'm thinking of going at 3am, parking the car 2 blocks down, and scouting on a bicycle, if all's clear, cut the locks, check it out, anything usefull, take it out, go back, get the car, quickly load and leave.

I'm pretty sure cutting the locks could be construed as criminal trespassing just about anywhere you go. In many places, DD is legal, but almost certainly not if you are destroying company property (and yes, the lock would count as company property). Furthermore, if you were caught, you'd no doubt get nailed hard. If you weren't caught, it'd prob. be the last time you hit the same place, esp. if there was anything good there, because no doubt the cops will patrol the area far more after a call (cops tend to protect local businesses....its just the way it works). I would really reconsider the lock cutting idea (or rather, just don't do it).

cut the locks,
People like you are the ones who ruin it for the rest of us. Man, if I came across someone like you trashing my sweet spots....well....lets just say it would be pretty embassasing telling your friends that you got your ass beat over a dumpster.

Wow. That is a terrible idea. It will work at most once(do you honestly think the people who have the dumpsters will appreciate someone cutting their locks? Do you think they would put anything remotely of value in the dumpsters after they notice someone cutting their locks?).
Bottom line - don't do it.

Yeah, some of my friends and I picked up a "Extended-capacity Maintence Kit" for a Phaser 8400 Color Printer in a Staples dumpster. It looks to be used; these things retail for over $100 on froogle; any idea how much it might fetch used on eBay? :p

Searching completed listings will usually give you a pretty good idea of how much something will sell for.

Went again but this time I kind of cheated. I work for a construction crew and we are remolding a church. Well today I over heard the pastor talking about his new printer and how he got rid of his old one. Well today after work I went behind the church and there it was a HP DeskJet 690c..
So basically what you are saying is you stole from the church. Now Im no prude but I wouldnt even do that, that took a set.

salvage is a long way from stole
sounds like what he did was save the Pastor from adding to a growing toxic morass (http://www.svtc.org/)

So we dumpster divers are "Tree Huggers", I have been diving since I was 16 and never once thought of myself as saving the world from the"GROWING TOXIC MORASS". But so as not to start an argument I can see where your coming from. I do however still think it takes an enormous set to dive behind a church.

well Id say as far as reaching conclusions
any electronics left out for the weather is "trash"
and fair salvage, regardless of its location
and that accusing folks of stealing tends to create problems more often than not :p

In New York (where I was a retired Police Officer) the taking of trash prior to it being picked up by the Dept of Sanitation is stealing. Now if you read what I had written correctly I did not say he was a thief I stated he "stole" from a church and that took big cajones (it was a compliment actually), no one reporting him here.

just my $.02 worth. how can it be stealing from a church if the pastor had discarded the printer? when someone discards something(trash) u pick it up. what's the difference? but then if he had asked the pastor if he no longer needed the printer he could have it gotten without rummaging for it.

In New York (where I was a retired Police Officer) the taking of trash prior to it being picked up by the Dept of Sanitation is stealing.
that would be an atypical municiple law
(probably to keep vagrants form creatng a mess and being a nusiance originally)
in fact precedence in Federal Court about law enforcement agencies rights to seize "trash" without a warrant is quite clear, derived for historical (and public) rights of salvage.
that of course would be seperate from considerations of tresspass and assume the "trash" has been moved to a public thourghfare for disposal, afterall rummaging in someones garage through a trashcan wouldnt be kosher :p
Commercial dumpster diving can thus be considered a grey area but historically between recycling efforts (cans), traditional slavage law and "the greater good" there is considerable precedence to argue a case infront of any court
especially if one is salvaging electronic equipment that is in no small part laced with toxic heavy metals destined for a landfill, a problem currently recognized at the Federal, State and most Local levels.
Even when in direct violation of a municiple code, a salvager with a glib tounge has a very good chance of first talking a law enforcement officer into a reasoned response and finally a court, where the worse case senerio is likely a slap on the wrist
hmm iv got a local compusa..and many other stores
whens a good time to go dumpster diving? :)

little research
http://www.paghat.com/dumpster.html
In 1988 the US Supreme Court ruled that trash-picking is legal. But even before that, there are centuries-old precident laws going back to Jolly Old England that establish as a veritable "right" for scavengers to obtain & keep or sell anything they find in the trash.
A very few cities have nevertheless put restrictions on dumpster diving & local laws should be checked at the library (does no good to ask the police who won't know, won't look it up, but might say it's illegal rather than admit they don't know & don't care if its legal or not).
Exceptions are when dumpsters are locked, are inside gates, or posted no trespassing, or when there specific municiple restrictions which would regard it as theft to remove material from recycle bins as distinct from trash dumpsters of mixed refuse.
By & large when it's in the trash, it's fair game, whether you're the cops going through the trash looking for evidence without a search warrant (in most cases, they don't need a search warrant), a crazy nosy neighbor reading then posting on the web someone's discarded correspondence (no legal right to privacy if it is thrown in the trash, though some copyright protections to reproducing or "publishing" it might apply), a hungry homeless guy looking for pizza rinds, a craftsperson looking for weird junk to weld together into "art", a junk dealer looking for salable freebies, a major recycling company contracting with the city or county but not with whomever threw out the garbage, or a dumpster-diving hobbyist, such as a gardener, salvaging thrown-out potted plants or burst-open compost bags from behind a Walmart or Home Depot or from a compost heap at the cemetery.
The illegal part would be depositing your own trash in someone else's dumpster; circumventing a lock; or leaving a mess. When trash is on the curb or alley, there is not even a trespassing issue, but on business tarmacks or parking lots the issue of trespassing can become clouded, though if legal access is generally permitted for customers, so too it is for dumpster divers.
Garbage left on a property that does not permit general access is illegal to take -- that worn out couch on the curb you can take, but when it was still sitting on the front lawn getting rained on & moldy, it remained the homeowner's personal possession. There are also "intellectual property" issues. For instance, if I throw out a manuscript for an original short story & you find it, the manuscript is yours, but you can't publish it; or if you find a computer harddrive, it's yours, but the software on it might not be legally transferable; & so on.
Most dumpster diving is behind retail shops. The restriction (with exceptions) is usually a lock, not a law. No lock, no prohibition. Dumpster diving has become so common, though, that some cities feel the need to regulate diving, as sometimes guys with big trucks drive through alleys getting recyclables & whatnot, & sometimes bums leave nuisance calling-cards like all the black plastic bags ripped open & scattered about a parking area. A few states or municpalities are mostly concerned with dumpster diving only for the sake of taxing such microbusinesses which scrounge & sell enough stuff to make a living, who often fall underneath the radar of taxing authorities.
Habitual dumpster divers sometimes keep photocopies of articles on the Supreme Court ruling to give to irate shop owners who threaten to call the cops on dumpster divers. Politely informing them of the law, as long as it's not rudely expressed, & your reassurance that you'll be following the law by leaving no mess, usually shuts them up. If the owner doesn't care if it's legal or not but just wants you to go the hell away, they will have to post a no-trespassing sign or put a lock on their dumpster. As many do. Otherwise, if it's in the trash, you can have it.
Some businesses put stuff out back beside the dumpster with the expectationthat it will be hauled away by dumpster divers, & they're glad of it, it keeps them from having to pay for a bigger dumpster. But in some cases, as with bins of cardboard & paper which earn
