The wife and I decided to go out a few nights ago and see what was in the local dumpsters. We ended up with quite a few goodies...

$180 Air up mattress with a built-in air pump, brand new, works awesome

Homedics electronic scale with built-in body fat calculator, "up" button was supposedly broken, but all you have to do is push it a little harder

Barmaster electronic mixed drink thingy

parafin wax manicure kit, brand new, just had lid hinge broken, fixed with super glue, and pedicure kit, with dremel-like tool for nails, etc.

fogless shaving mirror for shower with built-in LED's, light button was broken, but just needed to be glued back in place

Intellivision 25 arcade games in one thing that hooks up to your tv, works fine...crappy games of course...

one time my buddies and me accidently opened up a dumpster at a chinese buffet, thinking it was the store next to it... BIG MISTAKE. that was one of the worst smells i have ever experienced.

Yeah, when I was really young I used to go to local businesses to get gallon containers to catch frogs in. I made the same mistake with a local Chinese resturaunt, absolutely horrible.

Guess I'll share a small grab that I had one time while I'm here. I managed to catch a K-Mart just before it was going out of business and someone had thrown out a large box full of Rand-McNally US atlases. The only thing they did to make them unreturnable was rip off the front covers. All my family has them in their cars, all my friends have them, and anyone that is talking about going on a trip gets one. I even have one I am planning on marking up for all the roads I've been on in my travelings. :)

Poked my head in the OfficeMax dumpster today. Soggy as hell (it has been raining) but I grabbed a DVD+R disc still in its case. It looks to be new. I don't have a DVD-RW drive so I can't test it, but I might try to find a friend who has one. Going to go back tonight after it is closed to do some real diving.

EDIT: Went back tonight...it was empty! :( Guess I will have to start diving in the middle of the week.

No new posts lately, so I thought I'd chime in.

Found two computers in the same dumpster over the course of a week. A 486 SX/25 (woo hoo) and a Pentium something or another. Both had working hard drives (200m and 2.2G) which will be good for some upcoming MAME projects.

Some variety of Mac @ a Mac store.

Gateway monitor like the one I already have, but I left it. Should have taken it for parts. Might have even worked.

Look at it, does the media show track marks? Put it in any DVD player and see what happens. You know a DVD+R is a different recording format than DVD-R or DVD-RW and is a once only write (or many once only writes) in a DVD+R or DVD+RW drive, right?

Wampa

My bad, it is a DVD-R.

I can't see any track marks, and nothing happens when I put it in my DVD player. I think it came from a larger set, maybe a 5 or 10 pack, because there is no UPC. It might have come out of a set and they just tossed it because they couldn't sell the individual disc.

I found a DVD Dual format drive the other day. Tested and confirmed CD Read and CD Write, just need some burnable DVDs. Also found a USB Extension cable and a 128mb thumbdrive that works great.

Last night was luggage night. Found two practically brand new suitcases. Brand name stuff, really rugged.

Also about 50 rolls of wrapping paper. Not XMAS, birthday and the like. Pokemon, wrestling, Dragonball Z.

Well, here I go again...
My wife just informed me that her job is getting ready to toss out a TON of good stuff. Boxes full of PC cards and, get this, at least 20 brand new, still sealed OEM 30 gig HDDs. I don't know why the hell they are throwing them out, I don't want to know. But I'm going to be going tomorrow to get as much of this stuff as possible. The IT dept. is so unorganized at her job its rediculous. Will report back later.

I could use some of the hardware also, as I am going into computer forensics, and need to make a computer just for that purpose. When I would collect the evidence, it needs to be done on a totally different computer, not connected to the internet. Is there a way I could get some of this hardware? This would be a great help to me, as the pickings here are slim.

BTW, what does PIF mean?

Went Dumpster Diving last night and found something you guys might like to look at. Yep I sure did I got a whole computer desk. The only thing wrong with it is a big scratch down the entire back side which you cant see b/c its up near my wall. I'll probably fix that this summer, but I tried Dumpster Diving last night and now its a new hobbie!

Went diving today (not my first time), didn't expect much since I can't drive and theres a foot of snow on the ground...

On top of of the garbage in one of the last dumpster I check (rest just had normal garbage in), I found a 1.6gb hd, from a company I've never heard from, (Daisy Disc Corpation). Took it hope and just clicks like my other HD I pulled from the trash during October. :(

W00t I now have another coffee cup coaster ~! :D

Going to go again once the snow melts, and maybe can find some parts I need for my HTPC. (Special Compaw PSU, larger broken VCR).

Damn, I can't wait to get my license so I can check out the parts at all the M & P places 10-20 miles away :( :(

Take the hard disks, and gut them. Inside are magnets, perfect for anything, like hanging your best friends car off a bridge ;) Okay, bad joke, but they are super *STRONG* magnets. At least you can get something out of the dead hard disks ;)

I was driving by OfficeMax tonight around 10:30 with a friend when we noticed the dumpster in the back was full. Not even planning to dive, we poked our heads in the dumpster, and came out with three new DVD+RW discs and two CD-RW discs, still new in cases. It was hard to see because there were no lights and it is incredibly cold (dipping to negatives) so we drove back to my house to get gloves and jackets and a flashlight.

Came back and dug through some more. The flashlight I grabbed was HUGE, made of metal, over a foot long easily. Although the dumpster was full it was mostly Earthlink demo CDs, regular trash, parts of a chair (not the seat so we didn't bother to grab it all) and a Sentry safe (the door was broken off). Since we were in the mood, we checked out Circuit City and Best Buy in the area. Both had compactors, so no luck. It was strange walking behind buildings at midnight with a giant flashlight in my hand...real adrenaline rush during the dives though :). We tried to find the CompUSA by the mall but got lost and ended up going home. Going to try tomorrow for CompUSA maybe, since it looks like people here have had better luck with it. I might bring my camera with me to take action pics, but I am not sure if I am ballsy enough to carry a $200 camera into a dumpster .

A picture of our small haul! (http://www.extensiontech.net/wampa/pictures/dd/11904.jpg)

3 x Memorex 4x DVD+RW 4.7GB

Went again but this time I kind of cheated. I work for a construction crew and we are remolding a church. Well today I over heard the pastor talking about his new printer and how he got rid of his old one. Well today after work I went behind the church and there it was a HP DeskJet 690c. So I'm kind of sceptical, that a preacher would throw something away like this. Thank god the cords where still plugged up to them. But anyways I took it home and tried it out and it worked! I mean it even had half of both cartriges still. :D

Diver for life.

After a three month sabattical, I went to the local Staples for another look-see. The dumpster was practically overflowing, so I climed on top, nothing to see. I was freezing, so I didn't do much digging. I saw stuff laying around the outside of the dumpster so I hopped down and looked behind. In the dark, I see something that looks like a black lump with straps. I reach for it, pull it out; lo and behold, I come up with a Swiss Army Backpack (made by Wenger, not Victorinox) with a small tear where one of the straps attaches.

Win!

Oh, I can take a picture if any skeptics need proof.

My girlfriend works at a Drs office near a locla hospital and she noticed 3 PALLETS OF COMPUTERS AND MONITORS! So she told me, I drove down and scoped it out. Couldnt get in close becuase their were alot of people. So I call tonight from the parking lot and this snotty lady answers and is all rude. I nicely ask her if they are going to throw them out and if they mind if I take one for a school project. She tells me they are not for me and she reminded me this was the hospital after all and hung up.

Sooo I gave them a chance..Tomorrow night im taking a friend or two and doing it heist style. Roll up fast, Jump out, swing open the doors, pitch in as many as we can, close doors, jump in and speed off. Catch me now rent-a-pig!

Yes I did, well one of the sides was completely off, so all I had to do is get some new screws and go to work. As far as the droors they had no rails and they where out of it and thrown everywhere. So I went to wallmart and got all my rails and fixed this beast up. It still needs some work though, but hey One man's junk is another man's treasure.

NotSoSimple: go for it. I hate people who say it is just there, and it is not yours. Who knows, maybe she is protecting "her computers" and was rude to you because she staked it out. If they are a decent computer, I could really use one. Let me know if they are a good computer. I don't except it to be a pentium 4, but something a little upgraded on the technology scale ;)

To me, it would be fair game. They are sitting loaded on pallets, near a trash can, or out in the open. It's not like they are boxed up, and have new pentium 4 stickers all over them. If they wanted to keep them, they would protect them from the elements!!!

Hmm well after sitting in the parking lot for 15 minutes, the security didnt leave. They sat in there little cart the whole time. Pissed me off, but Im not leaving that lot alone. Tonight it will get stalked upon again.

Instead, I took a buddy and we hit two local computer shops, and Staples. Found a HP CD-RW (Not Tested), A7N8X BackPlate, about 5 PC Magazines w/ CD-ROM Included (Not slashed up!) and one Computer Shopper Mag, and finally the correct base for my leather office chair. When I dove it, it didnt have a base, so I finally found one that works so it will be complete!

Ill hit up the hospital later tonight, see if the rent-a-cops are out for a donut break.

Now me and my friends also got pulled over once, and the cop ran my tag, got all of our licenses, and asked what we were doing. Went tonight. Drove the few miles to a retail park that usually has something for me, but didn't have any luck in the PC shop dumpster. However, I got a weird point of sale thing from an electrical chain store that looks brand new. It's about 3' high by maybe 8" wide, with a strip light inside, I guess you're meant to put posters in it so they're lit up from behind. The protective covering is still on the perspex at the front, it's opaque white so it might make quite an unusual lamp. I'll wait untill it dries out to plug it in though, it's raining here. It needs a new plug 'cos the old one is smashed, I wonder if that's why they threw it out?:).

Anyway, I figured I might as well try the bins at my local supermarket. After working up the courage to go up to them....SCORE!!! Loads of food and other stuff. Mainly dented tins or damaged packaging. Amongst other things:

15+ cans of cola, 10 soft packs of fruit juice
6 cans of beer:)
5kg bag of Basmati rice with a tiny tear in it.....Basmati is ****ing expensive:D:D
muesli bars
cans of tomatoes, hot dogs, fruit slices (several of each, all slightly dented)
packet soup
4 litre cartons of UHT milk.
Bag of pasta, again a tiny tear in the bag
bottles of shampoo and fabric conditioner

I plan on going back, that's for sure:)

Rich :¬)

Well instead of studying for my russian test tomorrow I went out to the office equipment company here in town and I got a 30 gig western digital "recertified" hard drive. There was a bit of toner on it but it works just fine. 15 fucking degrees F out there too(there's a bank with a temp display that I drive by. It's just a reminder of how crazy I am for doing this shit). I got a cash register there a few days ago, but the printer module is missing so I can't do anything with it. It should be good for a couple vfd displays(numeric only, though:mad: ) and a couple cool keyswitches though. I've also gotten a small tv out there with the cable plug missing, but I should be getting a part tomorrow to fix that. When I was home over Christmas I pulled a nice microwave out of oriface max and it is just missing the turntable. That's about it. Oh yeah and there was quite a few hardcore porn mags out at this place, but I was only able to grab one(I wasn't about to jump into a dumpster in 10 degree weather to get some damn porn mags).

Holy shit I can't believe you read all through the pages! I understand how addicting it can get though, reading about what people find. Not nearly as addicting as dumpster diving itself though. I've been going out nearly every night now. A lot of times I don't find much of anything, but it's like gambling - there MIGHT be something there so I just have to look. Went diving a bit tonight. We cruised to another Best Buy, Circuit City, and Office Depot, and they had a compactor, a compactor, and a locked dumpster (we pried up the side a bit and peeked in but there was nothing interesting). Drove around for at least half an hour looking for stupid CompUSA...next time we will have to Mapquest it. At the end of the night we hit up our favorite location, OfficeMax, and scored a box of DVD+R discs (FujiFilm) valued at $25. We have a you-get-what-you-grab policy, so he got 3 discs while I got 7. They are all still shrink-wrapped in their jewel cases. Next time CompUSA is making the list :).

Not dumpster diving, but off the street... 2 (two) cd duplicators.

Specs: PIII 750mhz socket 370
EPoX EP-3VCA (apollo kt133a)
64mb PC100
20gb Quantum Fireball Plus
4 "initio" ultraSCSI cards
12 SCSI CD-RW's, 12x10x32
1 ISA bootrom controller thingamashit
2 power supplies, 1 ATX and 1 AT
4 sunon fans

This first one seems to be fully functional. I'm assuming the other one works also, but I havent picked it up from my friend yet. The guy knows nothing about computers, but he knows enough to take stuff he finds on the street and call me up :)

I'm gonna part one out, and keep the other... :)

You have two towers built with obsolete drives on an expensive obsolete interface on an obsolete platform.

If they work, how could they be worthless?

It has a 20gb hard drive able to store probably about 22 cd's. I'm guessing that the hard drive can be swapped for a bigger drive as well. It has 12 cd burners that may not be 52x, but if they do the job, then that's all that matters. If it works, which it appears it will, then it's hardly obsolete.

I don't know about lancaster PA but in NYC people get rid of things for different reasons, know what I mean??

Anyway I will test it out later tonight.

Okay, so I tried this wednesday... I went to our local chain electronics store "Media Market", what a stupid name... and encountered a padlocked gate. I inspect the padlock, see that these idiots left the serial number sticker on it. I call Abus (lock company), say "Yea well I've got a door in our house's communal celler, it's padlocked with 1 of these hugeass things, how do I open it I lost my keys.". The service rep asks for my number, Ipretend to rifle thru my desk, give it to him. 2 days later the keys are mine.

Last night I snuck in there, did the photo-in-front-of-the-camera trick, and started digging... MOTHER LODE!

Micro-ATX board for AMD xp / N-Force 2 chipset
6 sticks of DDR ram, of which 2 stics of 512/128 are functional
a SHITLOAD of wiring
a CCFL with a burned inverter... the 8-inch CC is fine
a P3 600
a RAID card where the third IDE channel won't work
an 80 GB HD with 61 broken sectors, but otherwise functional
various writable media
2 KEyboards, w/broken keys, repaired in under 1 hour

As a mechano-optical drive interface it is. The whole point of SCSI CD burners was to reduce the number of buffer underruns, IDE drives with buffer underrun protection make that pointless, especially when contrasted with the much higher cost of SCSI.

Ok Benny, you're a dumbass. You obviously don't understand what a production environment is.

My whole point was explaining why some company would throw away those drives, it apparently went right over your head.

The company who pitched those towers probably replaced them with IDE drives that are at least 4X times faster, don't have buffer underrun problems, and were several thousand dollars cheaper. The new towers are entirely based on firmware and don't have whole computer, operating system, burning software in the loop to cause problems.

It's like comparing an old 486 to a present day system, sure the old computer might still power up, but what are you going to use it for? The old system is worthless in it's original role to any company that wants to stay competitive.

From your blurry pictures those drives look like Matshita's; I had at least 60 of those sitting around until we threw them because they were taking up to much space. Doing the job is not all that matters when you're paying people to operate the drives and have a deadline, at that point speed becomes quite a large factor.

That is why those drives were thrown out. Not everyone is coming from a "Oh, this is cool" standpoint, there are often more practical matters to consider.

Yeah I was pretty embarassed when I started diving. A lot of times I would just go out and drive by the dumpsters or something and not even get out and look. This doesn't track right. I never said they were worthless, there was quite a large caveat in my original post.

This whole thing started because I tried to explain why somebody would not be an idiot to throw those towers away. As a diving find, they're one of the best I've seen.

After saying for awhile that I would try this....me and my friend decided to go out last night. We stuck around our side of town to start. We went behind this little mini-mall near my house, I wanted to check out the paintball store dumpster.
So we get there....hop in the first one. I find this bag full of little nic nacs. In-the-box christmas ornaments, misc spongebob stuff, and some sweet lookin purses (GF's birthday comin up :D). On on the next one.....jackpot. Inside we found about 3 bags of paintballs, a few broken ones inside but other than that perfect. Also some army/navy "survival tabs"....I guess theyre emergency food rations in a pill, all fresh sealed, $25 a bottle the sticker said. Also a 4 pod camo paintball harness, 1 VL pod, a Custom Products barrel display stand, and some army issue boxers.
Alrighty on over to staples....They had one of those really tall ones, so me and my friend hopped right in. We found about 15 Maxwell CD-Rs brand new..in the cases. 1 clear computer desk rollmat...sittin on it right now :D. A few billion day planners and a lil bit of paper. Also inside there were tons of ink toner cartridges...I opened some of them but it looks like they were all used. I thought they had to recycle these?
So earlier in the night we decided to
try Officemax, so we took a drive behind only to see a few guys unloading stuff into the back door. So we decided to go back later.
We came back to Officemax, parked our car in the back. We walk out of my car only to see an employee walking to the back to throw some trash away. I can imagine we must have looked suspicious...parking in the back....wearing gloves. So we kept on walking around the building...to make it look like we were there for other reasons. So we chill around the front for awhile then decide to go back. As were walking back....I peek over the corner to see a cop car parked right behind mine.....crap.
So we run into the nearby Shop-Rite buy some sodas, and plan out our story to the cops. We were gonna say we were lookin for some boxes, and ran inside the store to get some sodas real quick. As we walk out the door..I see the cop driving away from the area and out onto the highway.....whew! But then I think wait....cant they leave tickets on your car window?! So I rush over....no ticket, thank god.
As you can imagine we decided to leave that part of town and go see my GF for a few minutes. Did that and decided to try one more place. Maybe some of you know the corporation Pfizer (makers of Viagra)? Well yea they have quite a few offices around my city. So we gave it a shot, I was a little nervous doing it because of the tight security. I drive around the back of the building and see 2 dumpsters...decided to leave my car running...just in case:D. We walk on over...and wow. A PILE of computer monitors and systems sitting in a pile of snow.
So we rummaged through the pile. Most of the towers were gutted and werent very appealing. But the monitors..wow. I picked out 2 Samsung 17" Syncmaster 710s's which looked to be in good condition. Threw em in my car...and decided to call it a night. I'll let you guys know the condition of the monitors once they dry out :D . Overall I'd say it was a good night, im doin it more often.

I used to work for a maintenance company that did most fix-it work for Public Storage. The one perk of the job was cleaning out the units of people who never paid their monthly fee.

A few units were freaking goldmines. However, it's hard to load a piano into a untility van . . .

This one unit I ended up snagging a meat slicer (yes, like from the grocery store), an awesome Coleman sleeping bag and camping stove, both retailing for well over $100 a piece.

I also found this nice pen, which I've never used, but it's nice.

I knew the universal code to unlock the front gates, and there were a number of times I wanted to just rent a uhaul, go there and have my way with the units. Yea. . . fun stuff.

edit: I forgot about all the pharmacy rep stuff. The Public Storages in downtown Chicago had a crazy amount of tossed stuff from drug reps: pens, notepads, backpacks, clipboards. I once found an unopened case of A-1 steak sauce. . .that was cool. However, since it was food, I decided against taking it home.

Holy shit I had a damn scare tonight!! Fucking wild animals!! So there's two dumpsters out at the office equipment shop around here and they usually have some good stuff out there. I went out there tonight and checked the first dumpster, and I heard something in the second dumpster, but I figured it was just the trash settling. I looked in the second dumpster and I saw an interesting box so I grabbed it, but then I heard something rustling and moving around in the dumpster!!! I thought a fucking raccoon was going to jump out at me or some shit. Holy shit I was scared. I ran to my ex and drove the fuck out of there and didn't look back. Man. I never even saw what it was but I heard something moving around and that was enough for me. It wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't alone tonight, but I don't want to get attacked by some rabbid piece of shit raccoon and then have to drive myself to the damn hospital. That shit won't stop me from going back, though.

Lesson: try to avoid diving alone and if you hear something in the dumpster than leave and come back another night. Whatever is in there isn't worth getting bitten by some damn wild animal. Can you tell I'm freaked out/pissed off?

My solution? Carry a big-ass (four D-Cell) Mag-Lite with me. If anything is alive, just beat it until it stops moving. Great for when those mutant trash bags try to devour you as you stand on them.

Well I use a 3D maglite but I really don't feel like fighting wild animals. I didn't know what the hell was in there and I didn't want to find out.

Stopped by officemax tonight.

Found:

http://yoda634.com/pouches.jpg
11 nice pencil pouch thingies

http://yoda634.com/certificates.jpg
11 packs of 25 certificates each, blank so you can print on em.

http://yoda634.com/notebooks.jpg
Like 10 or so assorted notebooks.

That was just right on top. There were also several boxes of dot matrix paper...didn't feel like getting in, and too heavy to lift from the angle I was at.

can the stickers peel off without too much of a fuss? If they are a royal hell to get off, and tear up as they come off, it might be their way of "slashing" them. They figure you may not try to return them for store credit if they have those on there, or they are torn as they come off.

Did some dumpster diving tonight..just got back actually. It was great, we hit up this spot that I found last time I went. It was an industrial park...with a brand new Pfizer building. So we drive around back again....now last time, I really didn't look to hard through the pile of junked computer stuff...this time I did. First time I went I found a working 17" Samsung Syncmaster 710S....this time I found a 17" Samsung Syncmaster 750s :D (yet to test). After we got this baby...we hit up a bunch of other places.
We went to 2 Staples stores, Officemax, and many many others. Here's what we came up with (that I can remember):

1 packaged copy of Norton Antivirus 2004 Corporate (in package)
2 packaged copies of Turbotax deluxe (brand new)
2 printers: A fairly new HP and an older lexmark I believe
1 box of Staples Floppys (in package)
1 250MB Zip Disk
8-10 Various notebooks (All Brand new)
1 USB high speed printer cable (in package)
30-40 Rolls of packing tape (I got some ideas for this) :D
1 400W Power Converter ( I guess its for car audio:confused: )

Like I said...this is all I can remember. I'll post again when I go through it all. BTW...most of this stuff is for sale. Just PM me with offers...

24 Feb 04

Haven't posted any finds in a while.

I posted in the general forum that they had locked one of my favorite dumpsters. Well, I guess it was short lived, because after the first week it was unlocked ever since.

Having not found anything cool (or unbroken) in quite some time, I've been avoiding Selpats because I don't want to waste a trip.

Last night I was in the area anyway, so I figured, "what the hell."

Oh, man! Glad I did! Right on top I found a Kensington cordless keyboard/mouse combo pack. The seal was broken, but everything was intact, including the batteries. Since they were still open, I opted to take my find home and test it, and come back later.

Got home, tested it, it works just fine!

Went back ~10:30. As I was pulling in to the lot, a police car was pulling out. I kept an eye out to see what he was doing, and sure enough, he turned right around and headed my way. There was no way I was heading right to the dumpster, so I headed for the movie theatre next door (this is a small town, so nothing in this 'mall' is terribly large.

Now, this is Monday, and it's 10:30 at night. Luckily there will still cars in the lot: three of them. I parked and headed into the theatre. The manager is outside, and I ask to look at the video games in the lobby. Luckily he says yes. I go inside for a moment, give them a gander, and come back out. The cruiser is parked a short distance away.

I strike up a conversation with the manager. I've spoken with him before about games, but he clearly does not remember as it was some time ago. Mention that I do arcade games as a hobby, mostly classic stuff like Galaga and Pac-Man. He's interested if I could put a cabinet in his lobby. Cruiser finally leaves.

Go around back, and start poking in the dumpster. There's GOLD in them thar dumpsters!

What I remember, all in one box:

Motorized Disc Dr
Standard Disc Dr
Sony Mavica Starter Kit
Four laptop USB 2.0 PC Cards
Electric Xerox hole punch
Misc software (Lord of the Rings, MusicMatch)
Universal PDA Keyboard
Three USB hubs
Handheld Calculator (didn't work, back to the dumpster)
USB Cordless Travel Mouse (can't get it to work yet, will operate)
Serial --> USB adaptor

And much much more! I can't belive my good fortune!

Tried my usual dumpster route the other day and nearly left a trail out of my pant legs. Walked up to the 10 yard box behind the CUSA and out pops this dude throwing out a box! Nearly lost it.lol. Asked dude if he found anything good and he tells me "I'm just taking the boxes." right. I should have pulled rank on him as this dumpster has been a honeypot. But WTH we all gotta share.

After reading this thread a while ago we've been thinking about going diving for a long time but haven't. Until last friday hehe.

We went to Fry's and found two 17" monitors someone had just dumped off there and not bothered to put in the dumpster yet even.

We then headed to a local comp shop and looked in thier dumpster. Nothing. We noticed a few barrels and stuff in the corner of the dumpster enclosure and checked them out a bit.
One of them turned out to be a completely full KEG OF COORS. We took that and now its sitting in my friends room until we aquire a tap.

Both monitors worked, except one is a little dark and the brightness/contrast broken. Definately going to dive weekly now I think. Its freakin awesome.

On the way home from school yesterday I saw an older model desktop and monitor out for the trash around the corner from my house. Woke up around 1am and at about 3 jumped in the truck and went and made a few drive-bys to check if it was still there and wait for there to be no other cars then stopped and picked it up. Let it sit till this evening for the moisture to evaporate and plugged it up. Works perfectly. P1 133Mhz, 16M RAM, 500M HD, CD-ROM, Fresh install of Windows 95 (apparently by a guy named Gus :P ) This comp is blazingly fast for a 133, it smokes the 433s we use at work. Monitor is still untested as I was waiting longer for it to dry.

First time?

Nope not at all. I have acquired many useful things that people have found to be otherwise. First pass was to see if it was still there. Second pass was slower to see if it was worth getting (basically intact, no hole through monitor). Third pass would have been to pick it up but cars were coming from both directions so could not stop. Where I like to look for the opportunity, my dad on the other hand likes to make the opportunity. I generally will make my retrievals with some planning. He on the other hand will just kill all the lights, pull in the driveway, drop the tailgate and start pitchin in the goods.

There are no good places for DD around here so I tend to curbside shop. If you become familiar with what days the garbage runs in what areas and dont live in a rainy climate then you can do quite well.

Today was my second time dumpster diving. What can I say, it sucks bad. I have no luck at all. All good computer stores around my area have compactors. fl;kjadfl;jadf

I hate those things.

the first time I went I found some gold, thats right....... gold. It was behind a goodwill, which was right next to office max. I decided to take a peek, and then I find a whole baggie of gold, bracelets, etc.............. It was hidden right next to the dumpster. Someone probably hid it and then probably wanted to pick it up later. Oh well, I got to it first, muwhahahahaha

Then, guess what...... a cop pulled up behind me, right when I was half way in the dumpster. I calmly climbed out, turned off my flashlight and walked up to him and asked, can I help you with something sir? He said, "what are you doing?" I answered that I was looking for some boxes. The he said "I think there are some boxes in that dumpster up there, but you didnt hear that from me!" I laughed and answered thank you, and he drove away.

What can I say, that was a close one.

Now, the second time I went (tonight, it is almost 3 am and I got back not long ago), I scored some games. I peaked into the dumpster from GameStop, and the damn thing was filled with all kinds of games. Tons of empty game boxes, some t-shirts from splinter cell, as well as some posters. I think I scored pretty good. That was the only thing I found. Pretty shitty for spending over 3 hours looking into dumpsters. Ah well, maybe I'll try again soon.

Good luck everyone, and yes I know my spelling is horrible...... but what can I say, I'm tired and I wanna go to sleep! nite

BULKY ITEM PICKUP DAY!!!! Oh it's a junker's wet dream. Bulky item pickup day for the west half of Kirksville is this thursday, and there's already plenty of good stuff out. Just in the time since I've come back from spring break a few hours ago, I've gotten a tube amp, a microphone mixer, and old packard bell, five dot matrix printers(old shitty ones, not nice ones) and an electric typewriter. I'm going out tomorrow(and every day this week!) once it's light out so I can actually see the shit out there. Last year I got a fucking microvax II(that thing is a beast!! It has like 32 serial ports on the back of it!). I also found an Alps printer that I sold for $100 on ebay. I don't understand why people throw that shit out.

now the question is, was that surplus supposed to go somewhere special or not...

That's fucking nothing. ~12.7K in TWO AND A HALF YEARS.

On genmay, lol, we've had bigger spam threads pop up in a single day.

One got to like 60K then was deleted because of server load. That only took a few days.

Good example that hasn't been deleted: http://www.genmay.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=269716

10h5m and 20698 posts. That's like one post every second and a half sustained for 10 hours.

 Are there any threads on genmay that aren't spam threads? We need to cut out all this offtopic stuff; I don't want to see this nice thread closed.

Back ontopic, I got a dehumidifier last night on the side of the street(bulky item pickup week). The coils get DAMN cold. I'm going to get my watercooling system set back up and hopefully I'll be chilling by tonight. I also got a couple computers last night. No drives or memory, but both have motherboards. One has a celeron 333 and some agp video card. They're probably garbage like the rest of the stuff I've found, but at least I got a couple cases and power supplies out of it.

got tons of stuff last night but nothing computer related,

1) goose feather filled feather bed queen sized (thick blanket basically), it was thrown out because the feathers stuck threw, (all feather filled blankets are like that you idiots) anyways looked at it, it is brand new, even smells new and had its own zippered case

2) 15 tall glasses and some wide beer glasses, all wrapped up nicely in some paper and sealed in abox, no clue why they threw those out

3) 6x9 speaker, not blown will probably use it for something

4) mounting bracket for car still sealed in plastic

5) alot of greeting card envelopes

6) filing cabinet, looks new, says the front panel was broken off, i snaped it back in place nothing broken using it for my software cds, (has keys too :))

Did one of those computers have an AT power supply? I'm looking for a spare AT PSU to help power some extra hard drives for my main rig. I'd be willing to pay shipping and maybe a few bucks if you didn't need it.

Hey, check and see if those monitors will take a 15KHz signal. If they do, they'd make great MAME cabinet monitors.

Oh shit I think I hit something cool. Out at the office equipment shop there are 2 or 3 somewhat heavy, somewhat large copy machines. Better than the last one I found. At least one of them has a nice little lcd screen on it. Problem is, they are still in the fucking dumpster! I just couldn't get a good grip on any of them to pull them out. Now I am just waiting for my roommate to get back to see if he wants to help me get them out. Also, some shit is leaking out of the bottom of my car. I heard an occasional clanking when I was out tonight, and looked underneath the ex when I got back. Nothing is dripping, but there is certainly some moisture there. Looks like I know what I'll be doing this weekend. FUCK.

Oh, and for whoever was asking, oddly enough, none of the computers I found had AT power supplies. None of the computers worked, either(which, I guess, is why there were on the side of the street).

Update:
Well holy shit. I have outdone myself. There were a couple copiers in the dumpster and they were fucking HEAVY. My roommate and I were able to lift one up just enough to get it on the edge of the dumpster, then we just let it fall. We dragged it over to my explorer and somehow got it in the back. But my fucking door wouldn't close! I have a computer tied down in the back that plays music, and it was keeping the copier from getting far enough in. I ended up just tieing the hatch with some rope. I drove about 20 mph the whole way home. Also, when my roommate and I first went out, there were three cop cars about 200 feet down the road from the store and they were searching through a pickup truck on the side of the road. Damn bitches. That son of a bitch copier is still in the back of my car. I don't know what the hell I am going to do with it. All I really wanted is the lcd screen, which I probably won't even be able to interface to. Motors should be good, too. I am planning on making an xy engraving table out of some old printer parts. Shit I'm tired and I'm rambling. bah.

Hey I go to school with a guy from Tyler TX. Pretty crazy dude.

Well this week is bulky item pickup for the east side of town so I got some good stuff. Today I got a couple Echostar satellite receivers(no cards:(), an old mac that doesn't look like it is working, a nice scsi scanner, a canon bjc-620 colour inkjet printer(looks like it just needs ink), and an old panasonic colour dot matrix printer. I think that's it. There were a lot of junkers out driving around. Some dirty fucking couple picked up a nasty old matress. Crazy fucks.

The mac is a performa 6300cd from around 95-96 I believe. Some of the cables inside were cut and fucked up, so I have already gutted it. I have the motherboard, 1.2 gig hard drive, cdrom drive, floppy drive, and power supply. I have pictures of the stuff if you want to see anything. If not then no big deal. It will just be going to ebay(and then probably the dumpster).
edit: scanner is an epson perfection 636, but I think I am going to keep that. I just won a scsi cable for $.01 about a minute ago. :)

I scored five NCD19r Thin Client X-terminals last night (19" monitors with built-in network/KBD/mouse jacks;
I could have had a few more, but as I was pulling the last one out of the dumpster some indian guys walking by saw me with a monitor in hand and ran over...
one of them jumped right into the dumpster (no hesitation) and started hauling out monitors and passing them to his two friends, and I guess there weren't any more screens left because then he started pulling out garbage bags too (getting garbage juice all over himself!)
So the guy started freaking out and yelling loudly, probably because he really smelled like he had jumped into a dumpster, so I figured it was a good time to take off before the moron attracts some rentacops... there were only some filthy PS/2 keyboards left as far as I could tell, and they didn't look like anything I'd want to put my fingers on without disinfecting them first. When I think back I think I might have seen some CAT5 cable and mice that were used with the X-terms, too bad because I could have used those.
