what drives are they occuring on? external hd? if so, the problem may lie in the external enclosure (if you bought a seperate external enclosure and hd)

sorry, i forgot to explain. It's going on in my internal 40 hd. It's rather old and im working on replacing it. But, I reformated and reloaded windows. Things seem to be going pretty smoothly now. *knocks on wood*:D

Windows is such a pain.

sounds like your HD is dying... i wouldn't put anything you care too much on there (that isn;t backed up elsewhere)...

get a new drive.

good luck.

There are three causes for this error I've run into over the years. In order of statistical likelihood:
1) Windows selecting an incorrect setting for the IDE controller and drive (PIO/UDMA mode, drive caching, etc.)
2) Flaky controller and/or bad drivers for controller
3) Flaky and/or drive heading to Florida
