Just put together the D945PSN and the Penitum D 820. I've gotten overheating warnings every now and then. Idle the CPU temps are around 65 and sometimes will go to 75. Is that normal? What type of temps do you guys get?

I'm using the stock cooler with Artic Silver 5.

In a BTX setup I get 50C on an 820. I would say remount your cooler.

Most likely so. I'm getting 75 at moments and just now windows wouldn't load. It started working again when I opened the case and put a huge fan on it.

Argh....

First of all , why have you used AS5 ?

The Intel TIM is really really good and only if you screw up big time with mounting the cooler it won't do its job and need to be replaced.

You have such high temps probably because of a combination of the following reasons :

1.Incorrect mounting of the cooler
2.Too much thermal paste , it needs to be very thin and flat
3.Lack of good case airflow , a silent exhaust cooler needed
4.Incorrect BIOS settings for the cpu cooler

Take your pick...

Just remounted and redid the AS5 job. I actually laid it out with a sharp thin knife. Second, this is the same case I had my AMD 64 3000 Winnie.

How would the BIOS settings for the cpu cooler be wrong? ( I haven't touched anything in the bios. All on defaults.) The fan starts to spin up when it gets to the 70's. So far it seems like the fan is responding properly.

As for using AS5, it was simply because
1.) It was recommended for a Pentium D and..
2.) The thermal pad had half of it missing.

Anyways, I'm going to try to remount it again. Otherwise, I'm not sure exactly how to go about it. I've never had to go outside the standard conventions for cooling. I had the AS5 as back up in case I ever screwed up a mount. This would be the first if the third time is the charm.

There's your problem, read the AS5 guide. http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions_big2.htm

Sadly no.

I went by those directions instead of the flip out that came with it after the second time. The difference was to only put a small bit and then put the heatsink unlike the handout that said spread it out with a sharp nife..

Anyway, at first my temps were 55 and I was like "yay!". But then the computer hung up and I go a black screen. Now I'm getting 61-62-63 temps instead of 65.

Sadly, I don't know what to do. Maybe because I live in a hotter climate? (Miami) I don't know. Actually it can't be that since the AMD64 never got that hot.

Any suggestions?

With the Pentium D processors you have two cores under one substrate, therefore its bound to run hot. If you install the stock cooler properly then it should keep your temps under control. Try this:

1) Uninstall the cooler
2) Use rubbing alcohol to remove any AS 5 from the top of the chip, and then shoot a small dab of it on top on the processor (about the size of a pea). When you install the cooler it will mush the AS5 evenly over the processor and that's all you really need to do. I've heard of people hitting 3.5GHz on a PD 820 using the stock cooler so it’s not a piece of junk by any means.

Thanks for the response Doc, I'm sorry if I implied that the stock cooling is crap. In fact, that was the last thing on my mind. Here are some interesting observations.

THough it strikes me as odd that I have a portable fan blowing full force at the mobo and the lowest it will go is 45 C.

Even when the sensor reports 55 (with me having a portable cooling fan blowing directly at the motherboard) I get lockups and black screens even though the HD is still going. I'm really thinking the connect3d X700 PCIE is to blame for it. I have red dots racing from left to right across my screen.

I've noticed that the temps stay at 55 after a fresh remount and paste job. Then the next time I boot the temps start at 60. The only way to keep it just under 60 at 57 C is if I turn the fan controls off and have the fan going all out.

This could mean a case issue no?

I won't lie to you, I'm really disappointed. I was thinking I would go into this hassle free. I doubted it was the case cause the Winnie 3K was perfectly fine. Then again the case was cheap and I replaced the power supply with an ANTEC 2.0.

I know there are a bunch of people with great temps so I know I this can't be normal. I'm going to run this throttle watch to see if the CPU is throttle since people on the anandtech boards said it could be the sensor is incorrect.

Thanks for your time Doc, appreciate. (All you other guys too.)

Any luck with bringing your temps under control ?

Funny. I'm running the same setup (I'm assuming you just got your Retail Edge package) and just posted a thread today with the same exact problem using Arctic Silver 5! I went ahead and cleaned off what I had done using a lint-free cloth and applied much less AS compound than I did initially. I'm running closer to 55-60* C now, which is fine with me. It's just a hot processor, I guess.

Yup, that's what happens when you have two processor cores under one substrate.

I'm back.

Yes I have my retail edge bundle AND the bundle I won at the live event. Here is my report.

Video Card. The video card was overheating completely. I know some of you blamed my case well I had a 6800 GT 256 and a AMD64 3K and both overclocked I never got bad temps at all. Eitherway, I got a cheaper X300 w/HM and used the rest of the credit for two more fans.Either way, the Connect3D x700 was the cause of the lock ups and black screens.

I just put together the whole thing again with a new ANTEC p180 case I've had my eye on. Same problems w/ CPU temperature but cooler mobo temps. I think I realised what the problem is..

It is the motherboard.

I ran throttle watch and even in the 74's the cpu would not throttle under full load. The motherboard constantly has my CPU fan spinning like mad and won't bring it down even if I have a full fan blowing on a naked case w/ reports of 45C temps. Also, one of the capacitors on the motherboard near the bottom is practically ash ( burnt ). In addition, in the bios the motherboard won't report temps and the intel diagnostic crashes at times trying to report back temps or says "unable to detect" or "lost connection",

I won this board and I have no idea how to claim the warranty. I'm trying to contact the intel rep who awarded it to me.

Anyway. Even with the coolor mobo temps reported the CPU temps are still out of control just as much as the fan. It is so damn loud. This absolutely sucks especially after reading all the threads about how the intel boards just "work". Least it's comforting to know the CPU was never actually overheating.

Argh. Well after replacing the card no more locks, red dots flashing, etc.. Just a flaky mobo. :-(

How about getting some ventilation in to your case and slap on better after market cooler such as the Thermal Take Big typhoon.

damn intel bundles.........i was having the same problem. I reapplied AS5 like 4 times and still had horrible overheating (75)

I was able to get it under control to 65 by simply pressing down on the heatsink from the center (basically press down on the fan area). It seems to have caused the heatsink to make greater contact with the cpu, so try just pressing down on the heatsink while it's on the motherboard. Press down kind of hard, not hard enough to break your mobo obviously though.

Anyway, i haven't been able to get it lower than 65 (by bios measurement), but speedfan tells me it's 55. Not sure what's up with that but i haven't had any freezing so i'm not complaining.

That just goes to show you that the quality control of Intel-branded motherboards have gone down the crapper in recent years. Back in the i440BX days, you bought that company's SE440BX for quality and stability, not performance or tweakability. But the i820 era of 1999 was when Intel-branded mobos started to suck. I had a VC820 which came with a faulty parallel port (yes, there was power going through the port, but one of the pins took a poop). Then, I haven't bought Intel again until nearly two years ago - and then, I chose the wrong Intel-branded mobo (a D865PERL instead of the D875PBZ that I should have chosen). The D865PERL that I have did not run as stably as I would have expected from Intel, to begin with. And that's not to mention that the friggin' mobo killed two of my memory modules due to undervoltage.

I just spoke with intel, its the motherboard, they are giving me a replacement. I have the bundle I ordered plus the bundle I won at the retail edge live event. I went out of my way buying a whole damn new case thinking it was the air flow. I bought a P180 Antec and still the same problems though when I open the case when the CPU as at 75 or so it is actually much cooler in the case then in my room. You feel the cool air and everything.

Sucks because now I'll be out of a computer and I invested more then I had to since my last case was just fine. (Had a AMD 64 3k winnie at 45 idle/55 full load.) Go figured. :-(
