Seeking help upgrading two 8600GTs for a mostly photo-editing machine

It's my full-time career and has been for a while (I shoot editorial and commercial work...no families/weddings/babies/seniors). I own the NEC 3090WQXI monitor with spectraview software, which allows the monitor to calibrate internally rather than at the video card. I know that's certainly not...

Anyone else have an opinion before I pull the trigger?

Ugh...there's nothing worse than losing a long post. I really appreciate you writing one in the first place, but coming back and writing it all over again is downright saintly. Thank you. I'll admit, I never really even thought about AMD cards because I've only used nvidia in the past. Do...

Seeking help upgrading two 8600GTs for a mostly photo-editing machine

I actually run my audio through an old Extigy USB soundcard (how's that for old?!) but it allows me to constantly run a set of standard headphones (nice old sennheisers), a set of headphones w/ mic (skype, gaming, etc), and optical audio to my receiver, all at independent volumes of eachother...

Seeking help upgrading two 8600GTs for a mostly photo-editing machine

In reading newegg/amazon reviews, some reviews seemed to think that 4gb was a waste on a single monitor setup, but it was (or could be potentially) helpful on a multimonitor setup. And I agree...$40 just isn't that much in the overall scheme of things. Yep, one active DisplayPort to DVI...

Seeking help upgrading two 8600GTs for a mostly photo-editing machine

Thanks for chiming in. I think I'd prefer to stick with my current board, as I had pretty specific needs (tons of Sata ports for my 10 internal hdds, lots of i/o ports, etc) and the one I have works fine. Beyond that, it sounds like a 760 (or 660ti) would meet my needs with a couple...

Seeking help upgrading two 8600GTs for a mostly photo-editing machine

Yeah, I end up using quite a few different resource-intensive plugins and often end up with files that are 6gb with 50+ layers...and while working on those I also generally have lightroom open (which is often chugging away with other functions) and at least one movie playing (often watching one...

Seeking help upgrading two 8600GTs for a mostly photo-editing machine

I feel no need to spend to get bleeding edge or anything like that, so unless I'll see real improvements, I don't feel the need to upgrade. Again, this really isn't for a gaming machine, but moreso for a varsity photoshop machine. Do you think I'd notice a marked improvement worthy of the cost...

Anyone else care to chime in before I pull the trigger? I'm certainly open to other suggestions if you think I'm buying the wrong thing.

Great. Sounds like I'll go for the 3gb version then. One more question: when looking at the product page on the geforce website, it says the maximum resolution is 4096x2160. Can I assume that they're only referring to a single monitor (i.e. 4k) rather than talking about my extended desktop...

Seeking help upgrading two 8600GTs for a mostly photo-editing machine

I appreciate you chiming in again. Think it's worth $10? This is the card I was thinking of going with (2gb) This is the same(?) card but with 3gb ram. Should I be concerned with the "overclocked edition" title for the first one (listed on the amazon page for the identical card), but not for...

Seeking help upgrading two 8600GTs for a mostly photo-editing machine

Update: After a bit more research, I realized that I was ignorant to PCIe x1, PCIe x16, and PCI. I actually thought the PCIe x1s were something for SLI/crossfire or something else (yeah, I'm an idiot). So, it appears that I can buy either (or both) a USB card or SATA card that would fit in my...

Seeking help upgrading two 8600GTs for a mostly photo-editing machine

If it helps, here is what my mobo currently looks like. Here is what the board looks like when empty. I'm sure there may be cords or adapters that might allow me to work around these constraints and/or move cards around, so I'm open to suggestions. Video card Sata Card Video Card USB Card Open...

Seeking help upgrading two 8600GTs for a mostly photo-editing machine

Alas, it looks like all three monitors are DVI and VGA only. I believe the cord I have running from the video card to my receiver is a DVI to HDMI. I'm ignorant as to which formats of adapters can work successfully from/to DVI. I know I can't put an RCA adapter on a HDMI cord for home theater...
