Vista: Why all the bells and whistles? How about efficiency and speed?

Oh yea, since I'm an engineer and I worked in the aerospace industry for a little while I will just briefly explain why aerospace computers "never crash" For starters they do crash. An Airbus A320 crashed due to a bug which caused it to report a higher altitude then it was actually flying...

Vista: Why all the bells and whistles? How about efficiency and speed?

No one loves bugs. And no one is faulting you for wanting a reliable, efficient and high performing OS. Heck we all want that. And if you had just simply posted that you wanted your next OS to be more reliable and efficient I don't think anyone would have flamed you. It's when you start...

What will Vista bring to the table?

I agree. Every year people say "this is the year for Linux", it's mature enough now, it's easy to use enough now, there are enough applications for it now, etc. They've been saying that for the past 10 years and it hasn't happened. The number I often hear as a tipping point is 15% market...

What will Vista bring to the table?

Are you telling me XP could not stand to be more secure? Until the day comes that we don't even have to think about virus's or spyware at all, period, there is room for improvement. People still get virus's all the time. Peoples computers still get bogged down with spyware all the time...

What will Vista bring to the table?

People always say this sorta thing when new technology comes out, that the old tech "had it right" and there really isn't any room for improvement. But I can think of a ton of ways they could improve XP. For example is there anyone here that thinks XP has security nailed? Ok theres one area...

    Sony Delays PS3 (link)

The thing is if the only reason for the delay is a few issues with the Blu Ray drive then why are there no demos? Games and hardware should be finalizing at this point, there should be screenshots, demos at trade shows, etc. But there is absolutely nothing. I dunno it's hard to tell what is...

    Need assistance.

Did you just reinstall windows or did you do a clean install? If all you did was reinstall I would wipe the harddrive and do a clean install. If it's still doing it then it has to be a hardware problem.

Nother thread...how much am I wasting my AMD64 by not running a 64OS?

To be honest with you I don't understand why someone would upgrade to XP x64 now when 64 bit Vista is probably 6 months off. Unless there was a very specific reason you needed to be running a 64 bit OS or the bragging rights alone are worth it to you it seems like it would just be a lot of...

    Vista is infested with drm

I think the primary drawbacks would be the DRM, and of course the increased cost of media and hardware, at least initially. But the DRM is fairly complex, at least compared to what's in DVD, and I still don't fully understand how it will all work. Looking at both formats it includes, among...

    Vista is infested with drm

While the DRM is a pain it's to be expected. What people are really bitching about is that this new DRM, HDCP, is currently not available on any video cards, and there are only a handful of monitors that support it. So even if you have a brand new high-end gaming rig it will be unable to play...

    Vista is infested with drm

The DMV thing is completely analagous, it's an artificial obsolesence, not a quantitative one. The DVD rollout is not analogous. If you had a high end 2 thousand dollar monitor back then you could watch DVDs on it at full resolution, no problem. I could buy a high end 2 thousand dollar...

    Vista is infested with drm

Oh I just saw this one. Movie studios are not going to be sending out unencrypted HD copies of their new releases, period. The instant there are unencrypted copies floating around willy nilly is the instant they end up on the internet. The most any outside studio could probably hope to get is...

    Vista is infested with drm

It is absolutely our right to make back-up copies. Whether consumers exercised that right in the past or not is irrelevent, we have the right and we can do it. It's just media companies aren't required to provide us a convenient means of exercising that right. And having to upgrade your PC...

    Vista is infested with drm

How are they not obsoleting every video card in existence if a new card will be required to view protected content? I'm thinking hard and I can't think of any instance in the past where something on this scale has happened with any PC technology. AGP, PCI, PC 66, PC 133, DVD, CD, Floppy...

    From 95 to XP

How come everyone always forget about Windows XP's compatibility mode? Install the application on XP, right click the icon, go to properties, click the compatibility tab and set it to run in Windows 95 compatibility mode. I don't know how seamless this is for 95 but I have used it flawlessly...
