Ive shot weddings before and I would definately not use a monopod or tripod in normal cicumstances. I did use a tripod at one bat mitzvah when there was a power outage and there were no lights on in the building other than a few that were being powered by a generator.

Your problem is that your lenses dont let in enough light and usually indoor lighting is quite poor. Try iso 1600 and put it on Av mode and set it to the biggest f/stop and hope it works alright. You could try a flash as well but gives it a look that isnt as nice.
I wouldn't get the 1Ds Mk2 unless you want to buy all the best lenses. The original 1Ds had enough resolving power to outresolve alot of canons lenses and the mk2 will be even worse with that. Id suggest the 1D mk2 as I love mine, the quality is great and the 8.5 fps is awsome if you are doing...
