I'm not in game dev, but I still find the former theory FAR more likely than this. I've worked for a couple companies now that have built and shipped entire products 100% remote.

It's not a fake problem. It's literally revoking you being able to play, having already purchased the game and having been playing, depending on where you live. It was a _major_ issue in the making

Yeah this was a HUGE misstep. Should have never been allowed to purchase in the first place - super dumb and super egregious.

Plus the optics were absurdly awful from the start. Now you can't play the game you own and have been playing. Cya, you're fucked. It was such a screamingly obvious slow moving disaster. I don't know what they were thinking. I'm assuming the devs were hopeful this could of been resolved in time...

The graphics aren't exactly state of the art, but Persona 5 and the recent remake of Persona 3 are style incarnate, if you're looking for turn based JRPGs. 5 especially is spectacularly good I really wish Square would swing this direction again for a game.

I did work for a company that refused to take action on a server that had RDP open to the Internet. I tried everything possible to get them to do _anything_ about the fucking thing. Got shot down on everything. They got crypto'd a couple years later. A user on said server had a shit password...
