Considering that, if the manufacturer knew about it, it would void the warranty, yes. I can't claim any direct knowledge, but I have read many times that rough handling can result in a working drive with a shortened lifespan.
You can buy sheet metal that's been perforated in interesting patterns. Maybe you could make a fan grill out of that.
