    Halk's Worklog

Thought I'd best say this project isn't dead. I'm still waiting on the AquaComputrer order - they haven't even bothered to email or phone to explain why it's delayed. Having said that it really isn't the case that I've been patiently waiting. I did have one weekend set aside for the...

IceDragon -Need Help picking water cooling parts....

If you're still wanting to go AquaComputer then for the Cuplex XT they make a replacement copper top to replace the plexiglass. As for the best money can buy? Well, ThermoChill PA120.3 is the best radiator around. The "best" pump is the DDC ultra, with a modded top. Some are plexiglass...

The WC Thread: You got questions, we got answers!

Using Marci's figures from ThermoChill.... A PA120.1 will do the FX57. The TDP of the processor is roughly 100W. Overclocked you won't exceeed 150W, at the absolute worst, and realistically you're just not going to come near that. According to his graphs a single Panaflo FBA12G12-H1A will...

    Halk's Worklog

Well, a great deal of the cost is not related to watercooling. And for the watercooling I'm replacing about 2/3 of what I have, so the high price is unavoidable. It _should_ be worth it I think, when I get it finished. It really will be silent, and by silent I don't mean quiet, I mean really...

Cherry Wood case with Water cooling

I'd love to make my own wood case. There's plenty of reasons to justify it. For a start it's going to dampen vibration more than any other material. It's also going to be exactly the right size and dimensions for everything, because it's custom made. If I spent enough time working out exactly...

    The impact of tubing sizes

45 degree fittings are in the post :) Surprised they didn't arrive yesterday along with the rest of the stuff. Aquacomputer are still "processing" my order placed on monday night. :/ When the AquaComputer order arrives I can swap out the AquaStream contoller for the newer one that...

    The impact of tubing sizes

Is there any rough guestimation maths we can use to work out flow rates? I suspect mine right now are quite low - Aquastream at stock, 6 blocks, lots of 90 degree bends. Moving to 6 blocks, less 90 degree bends, and will be putting the AquaStream up to 70hz, so I'm hoping that keeps the flow...

    Aqua Computer or Dtek

I'm not really sure what you mean. If you're meaning that some parts of a watercooling loop are warmer than others then yes, that is true. But only by fractions of a degree. Since the water is cyclying through repeatedly the temperature of the water doesn't vary much in the loop.

    Which Watercooling?

I'd watch with a HDD cooler. From my experience they don't produce a huge amount of heat, not enough to warrant watercooling. A very slow fan can do all that's needed. As for the kit - it seems pretty decent to me. All I'd do is go to a watercooling specalist shop and price up the individual...

    Aqua Computer or Dtek

Well.... Nobody is going to dispute that everybody had always agreed that larger pumps, and or larger tubes had diminishing gains. I think since there wasn't any real evidence around - none that I've seen - then people would have had to make their own conclusions as to at which point it...

    Which Watercooling?

Hmm. I'd disagree there. That's the top end stuff, not bang for buck. Bang for buck is an AMD X2 5000+ not an Intel QX6800. It's not to the same degree with watercooling, not as huge price differences. But the Thermochill radiators (as I understand it) are the more expensive ones in the...

    Which Watercooling?

Ultimately it'll be you that decides the best option. I don't believe there's any real difference in price between a 120.2 and a 120.3 radiator (by the time you get all the components together) so that's going to be down to your own choice. As for the blocks and so on - I use AquaComputer...

    Which Watercooling?

Generally the advice is to steer away from kits, and pick parts separately. Are you looking for the best performing watercooling - regardless of the cost? Are you looking for something that does the job, don't care how it looks, and you don't want to overclock? Are you looking for the best...

IceDragon -Need Help picking water cooling parts....

Well, I'd suggest in a year or twos time, you're going to want the extra 20%/30%/40% boost that overclocking can give. Although I would say that the difference in overclock is mostly related to the CPU, and the difference between "ok" watercooling and the absolute best is only going to be...

    Project: Feeding Frenzy Interlude

Time for a bit more detail here. I was about to leave for work when I posted about the CPUs earlier. The dual core opterons are all essentially the same chip. They get speedbinned if they are suitable for the speed AMD is looking for. But because a chip has been speedbinned for 2200 Mhz...

Cherry Wood case with Water cooling

When you're finished you could paint it aluminium and it'd look like a normal case! (Seriously though that is a work of art. I'm sure you realise that already, wood looks better in person). I'll be watching this thread!

IceDragon -Need Help picking water cooling parts....

Well, that kind of spec isn't needed to blow games away :P I have a single BFG OC2 8800 GTX an Opteron 185 and 2GB of Redline. At stock it runs everything at max detail at 1920x1200, even Oblivion. And I'm going to overclock it a fair amount :P Your system at stock will eat every game...

    Halk's Worklog

Everything (that I currently think I need) is ordered, with the exception of distilled water, and the metal I'm going to use to double decouple the pump. The metal I will scavenge from somewhere, and the water I'll get in a garage or halfords or something. I now have less money than sense...

    A8N32-SLI and Athlon 3800+

Have you made sure the hypertransport link multiplier has been changed down to 4x or 3x? If you are increasing the front side bus then this can exceed what the motherboard will cope with without it reduced. Reducing it to 3x or 4x should not impact performance, especially if you increase the FSB...

    Aqua Computer or Dtek

I haven't seen one, other than in pictures. In retrospect I may have been better getting one of those than the 8800 GTX full cover block and keeping using the twinplex I have. I didn't mean to imply they were badly machined, or had razor edges... :P

    Help Choosing a Radiator

http://www.over-clock.com/ivb/index.php?showtopic=17958 There's in depth stats and comparison between different radiators there, but I don't believe the Cooling Works one is there - perhaps it's there under a different name?

storm vs. apogee gt/gtx vs. fusion

First thing I did with my 185 was cut off the IHS once I'd tested it worked. Made a huge difference to load temperatures... huge! But it seems that both AMD and Intel are now cementing the things on with proper glue or solder rather than easy to cut rubber.

Bowed Apogee GTX work poorly on S939???

I do not know how the bowing works on that block. However, possibly lapping it flat again is an option?

IceDragon -Need Help picking water cooling parts....

A quick response before I go to work. Water evaporation in a closed loop is a tiny amount. You do not need to refill your res constantly to keep up. You don't need to do anything. Change the water once a year and you'll be fine. Overclocking is a bit of fun, it's also safe, you really...

    Project: Feeding Frenzy Interlude

The 185 is the best chip AMD have produced for 939. The reason I bought one is because I'm going to be stuck with 939 for a while. Going quadcore is my next upgrade, and I will not be doing that for at least 18 months. Given that I like to overclock, I wanted to give myself the best...

    GPU ram cooling?

The stock cooler is a lump of roughly cut aluminium, with a fan mounted to suck air from a shroud, across parts of the aluminium which form a heatsink. The stock aluminium covers both processors, all memory chips, and VRM.

    Aqua Computer or Dtek

Thanks Cathar. Essentially what you're saying is that 10mm ID is ideal, anything above that adds little or nothing. Anything below that has an adverse effect. And also that 6mm ID (AquaComputer) does take a performance hit from the tubing size, but realistically it's about 1 degree. For one...

    Aqua Computer or Dtek

Well, if I ever was going to change my fittings to move to a bigger tubing than 8mm OD, before I place my order would be the right time. I don't suppose you'd like to comment on 8mm OD, and if it's overly small?

    MIPS Blocks Arrived Today

They've got a bit of an industrial type charm to them. Hmm, difficult to describe. They look like machinery, zero bling, but I'd imagine if you sanded all the rough edges away etc they'd look pretty decent. They do look pretty basic though, as if they weren't interested in getting the best...
  33. H

    GPU ram cooling?

No. You can use heatsinks and be fine. The advantage with a full cover block is that all of the heat is removed from the motherboard area.

    Project: Feeding Frenzy Interlude

If you really do decide to upgrade your CPU. Something a bit left field might be the new low power AMD X2s. I've found dual cores makes my system more responsive. The new low power ones generate a much smaller amount of heat.

You're right to get as many opinions as you can. There's two people that post here from time to time though, Marci and Cathar. IceDragon -Need Help picking water cooling parts....

I've been using AquaComputer blocks for well over two years. None of the plexiglass has cracked. AquaComputer use very thick plexiglass, to me it looks thicker than the stuff I've seen other companies using. I've heard of someone who cracked theirs by overtightening their barbs. They did say...

Well, I have all the stuff I need answered answered... almost. The only thing I'm waiting on is a response from AquaComputer about the 3.5 inch bay mount and replacement AquaStream. The replacement means I can "overclock" the pump, and it also means I can mount the face plate properly, since...

5600+ X2: which is better heatsink for it?

Assuming they are using the same stock heatsink as dual core opterons then yes it does have heatpipes and it'll be a reasonable heatsink. If you want to overclock or you want it quieter, then look at aftermarket coolers, but be careful in case it doesn't fit your case, or motherboard. A...
