Just thought I'd post a followup update to this:
The drives successfully finished their four passes of the badblocks check yesterday. All four drives report zero bad blocks, and random smartctl checks on each drive during the test revealed no SMART issues on any of them. I think I'm pretty...
Haha, perfect, thanks. I'm letting it run right now (the slow speed on drive d still concerns me, but at this point I don't feel like interrupting the process to try and figure out which drive it is and swap out the cable) but I'll post an update if I run into any particular issues.
I haven't...
I just tried it, and was able to open up a fifth console instance (and perhaps a sixth as well.)
I ran iotop for a bit, and it seems like drives a, b, and c are running at around 145~150 MB/s, although for some reason drive d is showing as only running at around 115~120 MB/s. Not sure why, but...
Okay, thanks, I think I just got them started.
fdisk listed my drives as simply a/b/c/d, which was simple enough.
I've got badblocks -wsv /dev/sdX running in each of four consoles. If I'm reading correctly, this should automatically run the 4-pass test on each drive with a different pattern...
Haha, you can have multiple consoles? I only see the one full screen one, so I assumed it was like the old DOS prompt or something, and I was limited to one.
I will try that now. Basically, start badblocks on one drive, then ctrl+alt+F1 to execute on a second drive and so on? (Or is F1 the...
I have 4 new drives (bought the 4x WD30EFRX bundle for $360 off Newegg yesterday, plus $35 in extra discounts.)
I figured running tests in parallel would be the best option, and I assumed I had to conduct steps #3 and #5 in order to do so, unless this is incorrect? Is there a way to specify...
Okay, just got everything hooked up and running. CD loaded up fine, although now I'm at a console and fairly intimidated, as I don't know what commands to enter. (I just loaded the default environment as it recommended.)
From some looking around, I assume my next steps are:
1. fdisk -l to...
Many thanks for your offer!
I'm currently downloading the ISO from their sourceforge, and am hooking my old machine back up to my monitor and such.
I'll try to do a bit of reading of their 'quick start' guide while everything is coming together, but if you have more specific directions and/or...
Thanks for the pointers; definitely appreciate the guidance.
It looks like that CD is listed here categorized as a 'Rescue' and 'System Administration' package, of which other similar ones appear to be ones like the 'Ultimate Boot CD' although I'm not clear on what exactly the difference is...
Thanks for the info, guys. I used DBAN simply because it was easy (load and go, basically) and perhaps I put more stock into its 'Verify' function than you guys are willing to.
Having said that, I'm trying to look into grabbing one of these Linux Live CD's, but...there are a staggering number...
Awesome, thanks for the suggestion.
I haven't used any of those Linux things before, though, so some research may be required before I can do what you are suggesting. I am curious though, is there a particular benefit to using that method over the DBAN thing? If I recall correctly, DBAN also...
Hey there everyone,
I just ordered 4x new 3TB WD Reds from Newegg since they had it bundled together for $360 yesterday, which was finally within my target price range of $30/TB. Actually managed to get them a bit cheaper between the free $10 GC they sent me, and the $25 off 200 AmEx promo. I...
Haha. Not really possible since he doesn't have another GPU either, but I guess I can try asking. Assuming that's not possible, though, any other ideas?
Sorry if I may have perhaps jumped the gun a bit, but I really want to avoid the whole waiting a week for them to ship it back to me just so I can spend more money and wait another week sending it right back to them carousel, and perhaps resolve it before they ship it back to me.
I'm not too...
Hey guys,
I'm looking for some help or advice on an RMA to Gigabyte I'm currently going through. I heard some horror stories, but I had to cross my fingers and hope regardless, and it seems like it may actually be problematic after all.
I sent in a Gigabyte GTX670 a couple weeks ago...
Not quite.
GOTY includes everything up to, but not including, the recently released Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2, nor does it include the upcoming headhunter DLC packs. None of the paid skins, either.
Essentially, you "only" get BL2, Season Pass, Creature's Dome, Mechromancer...
Technically, Google did somewhat announce KitKat a few weeks ago.
They put up a giant KitKat statue in front of their HQ, as is tradition for every other version of Android.

^Where I first read about it, lol.
It does make me...
Yeah, I am aware; I knew immediately that every single display was completely different, so I tried not to judge any colors or saturation at all.
I was trying to look at viewing angles, reflectivity/light rejection, backlight differences, and shadow/highlight detail.
Maybe even this is...
Yeah, I'm hearing more and more that new Plasmas are quite usable in brighter settings.
Unfortunately, the Achilles heel seems to be that almost all of them come with a glass screen, which I need to avoid due to our windows being directly opposite the position of the TV. If our windows were to...
All right, I will give it a shot.
Although, I would personally prefer getting a handle on the technologies they all use first, so I can accurately narrow down to a specific shortlist before looking at the models themselves. :/
I have not considered DLP's.
It took some Googling to figure out what they were, lol. I thought they were just projectors, which I had already ruled out. If you mean those TV's that kind of look like a truncated CRT, I'm not too sure what kind of benefits they bring.
Well, during the daytime it's tough to control the light because the windows do get excessively bright; I've closed the blinds in the past but they still show up reflected in the glass of our CRT TV, and I imagine this would happen on any Plasma I get as well, since the majority of them seem to...
freakycody: I am trying, but it's tough because the forums are filled completely with "Official XXXX Owner's Thread" and barely anything else. Of the threads where people asked for help, I saw few of them actively being replied to. Model numbers are great and all, but when you're trying to find...
I don't think a projector is really viable for us, haha.
We don't have a large enough clear wall to project onto, not the mention nowhere to put the machine, and I don't feel like drilling into the ceiling.
Anyway, I'm still trying to look for some good stores and/or showrooms, but from...
lol, I am trying to do that right now, but AVSForum feels like a place where you can only get information if you know exactly what you're looking for.
As for an in-home trial, that's actually easier said than done.
We honestly don't have room in our living room for 2 TV's, even if one were to...
Well, that's pretty comforting to know, with regard to burn-in being a non-issue nowadays.
Actually, even with my NEC 2490 LCD, I experienced burn-in for a few days, which freaked me out.
I spent a couple days reading a novel in PDF form in Adobe Reader; every page was the same size, so after a...
Well, both windows in our living room actually are situated right behind our couch (directly across from the TV.) It's a horrible position, I know, but there isn't much we can do about it in terms of arrangement of the room. There aren't any curtains; at best the windows have blinds over them...
Yeah, it sounds like from a color and picture quality, as well as motion perspective, plasma might be great.
However, it seems the common thread is that it has inherently lower brightness than the normal CCFL/LED LCD's, and so everyone recommends against it if the room is "bright."...
Wow, that's quite a lot of information to sift through; thanks guys.
I have seen AVS Forum a few times here and there, but I never made an account, since I wasn't too crazy into that hobby. Thanks for the reminder.
Lurker, the problem with simply going to a store is that the gearhead in me...
Hey there, everyone.
I hope this is a good place for this, since it technically is home theater equipment, haha.
We still have a gigantic and very old CRT TV in the living room. I think it's about time we retired it, as the newest input the TV supports is the amazing component video.
I have...
Hahaha, nicely put.
I was afraid of that, though are they truly useless for HDD's as well? I guess I am not surprised at this point, considering they are broken with SSD's and even ODD's.
I have considered a NAS, as well as a standalone home server at one point or another. I have the parts from my old PC that I could turn into an (overly powerful) file server, but considering at this point I still only have my single desktop to access it, I can't justify the extra power...
Hey there guys,
I have a question for anyone who might know more about this stuff than I do.
As I'm looking to expand my data storage, I'm running once again into the limits of available SATA ports on my motherboard.
Currently, I have an ASUS Z77 V-Deluxe mobo. I have 2 external...
