    P2V SBS 2011

No- it has always pointed only to itself. And when you first boot the new VM, you have to reconfigure all network settings anyway, since it sees it as a new NIC- std p2v stuff.

    P2V SBS 2011

Got a question for the "been there done that" crowd- planning a P2V of SBS 2011 at a client to replace old hardware. We've done it successfully at other sites with no real issues, but.... this site is a little different. The others were all single DC environments- single office, other member...

    KB3097877- get rid of it!

Tore my hair out on a few clients this morning, until it was revealed KB3097877 was the culprit. http://www.zdnet.com/article/outlook-crashing-after-windows-security-updates-you-are-not-alone/

Windows 10 Tech Preview is available

VM on Hyper-V- Seems pretty familiar so far- 8.1 with some UI changes, and the start menu works fine. Network printers connected, Office installed, no problems. This will satisfy most users I think. Finally.

VPN Service terminating on a SonicWALL

Not sure what you're trying to accomplish here- your SonicWall IS a VPN endpoint, for tunnels; SSL; IPsec client VPNs. Why would you need a VPN service?

    Dell Presision T5500 workstation

Yes- should work very well. Maybe pick up a Raid card and a couple SAS drives to really make it run.

    office365 rejecting emails- blacklist1

Bizarre- gotta love O365... the cloud answer to our dreams! LOL. Yes- just found out they all started going through at all sites today. Wow. Of course, no response from MS, and we get 50 phone calls and emails that "there's something wrong with the server!!". No explanations.

Also checked all of my client's IPs and domains against Blacklists, none of them are listed anywhere.

    office365 rejecting emails- blacklist1

Anybody seeing these today? All of a sudden this afternoon several different clients (all running Exchange in house) seeing some random rejections from Outlook.com hosted recipients. All Exchange servers on static IPs, PTR records in place, etc. All recipients rejecting are apparently using...

Windows 8.1 vs 8.1 Pro, Dell Venue 11 Pro

What app allows RDP on a non-Pro version? I looked quickly and they all just appear to be RDP apps, not client apps. And the Windows matrix still shows only Pro & Ent having client capabilities. Maybe I'm missing something here. This is our game stopper- we have to be able to RDP into the...

    2012 Essentials rant

Well, then we agree to disagree. In my experience out in the marketplace of SMB, amongst end users of all levels of experience and in all sorts of business scenarios, from engineering firms to architects to medical offices to general business sales offices, I have met one single person who said...

    2012 Essentials rant

No sh*t Shrelock. I did read- did you? Multiple comments about multiple things. Seperate sentences. You can try to dissect my opinions anyway you wish, and be a martyr to the cause, but the fact remains it is not an efficient layout. And, no- the desktop is not the same as it has been in...

    2012 Essentials rant

Yes, even though. And, as has been pointed out millions of times, then rebuted by the fanboys, no- the desktop is NOT the same. It is a stripped desktop. Cascading menus are logical, compact, and sensible. The tiled interface of the Apps screen is scattered, unorganized, and a mess. If you...

    2012 Essentials rant

Assuming a lot there aren't you? Did I ever say it created a "barrier"? No. I said I didn't like it. Why WOULD I like a pseudo touchscreen interface on a server? It brings nothing to the party. Zero. Yes- I am capable of figuring it out. Just like I was capable of using NT; 2000; 2003...

    2012 Essentials rant

If you mean Remote Web Workplace, that has always been a great SBS feature. Only kicker is now you HAVE to get a 3rd party cert- no more self-signed. Not necessarily a bad thing- but another step and something to prepare for.

    2012 Essentials rant

Yeah- it's pretty ridiculous. I cure it quickly with ClassicShell, but yes- metro has no place there. Ever. Make your points for the desktop if you want, but what does it bring to a party on a server?

    2012 Essentials rant

Agreed. I migrated a couple small offices to 365- and yes, it blows. Juvenile interface, little to no control over spam. No whitelisting (except IP, which is next to worthless). I even have one client (on 365) that has a vendor that just migrated a few months ago to 365 Ent, that cannot...

    2012 Essentials rant

Wow- what a mess this is. You know, the Win8 love/hate thing- desktop OS vs. Tablet... I get it. Trying to make things easier for Joe Average user. No Problem. But this stupified, dumbed-down interface on Essentials is a joke. They have emasculated Small Business Server. I've been deploying SBS...

Simplest way is to create a service for that port- name it whatever you want, then run wizard for a server connection, add that service, and voila- done.

    MS and Windows 8 Strategy

This would be an excellent concept. Let those who want toys have toys, and those who need to perform actual work on PCs have real PCs.

    MS and Windows 8 Strategy

For the same reason people have always upgraded- faster hardware; the old one is too old; etc. When OEMs are forced to stop shipping Win7 to businesses, the sh*t will really hit the fan. You think architects; engineers; contractors; accounting firms; etc will migrate to tablets? No. They...

    MS and Windows 8 Strategy

Many have predicted this, including myself. We're all labeled as fools, not knowing what we're talking about; Win8 is great; you're wrong. Well, the proof is in the numbers. And frankly, the fix is simple- bring back the start menu. Period. Just make it an option in the setup. Let people...

    Any one self Employed?

12.5 years ago, never looked back. We support small business networks. Some clients have been there since the beginning. Huge responsibility, but fun. No giant corporate swamp to deal with- just the people who OWN the place. You're part of their team and they appreciate you. Money...

    New gaming/CAD build

FWIW, I would consider spending more on the processor. AutoCAD, Revit, & 3DsMax need all the CPU you can give it. I would get I-7. I would also consider an Autodesk approved video card, not the gamer GTX card.

    Cisco selling Linksys

Best setup for multi-user Quickbooks remote access on 2003 Server?

Yes- we've run QBE on terminal server at a site for a long time. Originally on 2003 up to ver 6.0. Now running QBE 11.0 on Server 2008r2, w/RDS and QBE as a published app. Works well. This is the only practical way to provide access for remote users. Remember, you also need to provide a...

How are you guys liking Windows 8 so far?

This. I have supported MS Office users since the 90's, and no one has ever told me they "liked" or "preferred" the Ribbon. It's because they have NO CHOICE. It has cost business dearly, as their previously-proficient users sit there and struggle to find menu items they've used for years...

    Hate Metro? Get Classic Shell

It works pretty well, and is very customizable. I tried Start8, but it was a little flaky. When I ran some windows updates, it froze the login process, so had to system restore it back prior to install. Classic Start Menu no issues at all (so far). Yes, I've tried to get used to Metro as well...

    SBS 2011 backup MX

I want to set up backup MX for a client that is running in-house Exchange on SBS 2011. Their ISP has had reliability issues, and when their internet connection is down obviously email stops coming in. Yes- servers are SUPPOSED to re-queue and re-send, but this doesn't always happen. They own...

No more Windows Small Business Server

Wow. I am amazed by this. it just shows that MS doesn't understand or care how SMB works, or wants to work. SBS is a great product- it just plain works. My clients have no desire for cloud solutions. Zero. They want all of it in-house, they want control of it. Particularly Exchange. This...

where to buy xp pc new

What type of communication(s) do you need on it? Most older CNC apps use serial ports, so you should be able to run XP Virtual Mode on Windows 7, and map the VM serial ports to physical serial ports on the PC. If you need USB comm, well that's a different story.

The Verizon units may well be ProSoft units- they're great. We've used a few of them at an engineering client that makes remote monitoring systems for oil wells. The lab is in a container- truck it to the site, give it some power- and instant internet connectivity. We even use SonicWalls to...
