Finally got around to cleaning my closet the other day and now I need to give rid of some old [H]ardware that has been collecting dust.
So up for sale is:
1 Asus HD4850 - $60 - reference design with an AC Accelero S1 cooler with fan attechment mounted,
I can include the stock...
Summer '09 was ridiculous here in Seattle. The main problem here is that few people have A/C because.. well it's Seattle. Last summer was downright pleasant in comparison.
It's been a while since I've used the OS X client, but if I remember correctly it's very similar to linux folding in that it's SMP 2. GPU may be possible, but probably not worth the hassle.
It's been a little while since I had F@H running on my MBP but the option to pause the client while on battery power is standard for the SMP client.
The option should be under System Preferences>Other>Folding@Home once you get it installed. Here's a guide for installing...
My GTX 275 is still running games great. In BFBC2 at 1920x1080 the only thing I can't max is AA (and really 8x MSAA is fine). In fact, I have more trouble with not being able to max the IQ any further with all these modern games that don't support AA.
Go for the SLI route if you're really...
I actually enjoyed my Discrete Math class. The first day my professor told the class, "There are two things that I will definitely ask you on the final. The first is to prove Euclid's theorem, and the second is to explain RSA cryptography." Computer Architecture was fun too. I've never minded...
They've probably been cherry-picking good performing chips ever since production started. I doubt very much that they would only charge $20 over a GTX 480 though unless they have a lot more of these chips than we expect.
Will you be folding on the GTX 470 as well? If that's the case I'd wait to see how well they actually fold once it is supported by Stanford.
I don't know how accurate this is but I've been hearing that Fermi will require GPU3 to fold and maybe GPU3 will finally let the HD58xxs run to their...
Fortunately folding is supported natively on the PS3 so this shouldn't effect any of us.
With all the stories in the past year or two about people clustering PS3s for cheap HPC use this doesn't surprise me, IBM doesn't want Sony stealing potential customers by selling subsidized CELL systems.
That's pretty much how I've been treating the A1s. They have to get done eventually plus the extra PPD I get over my old notfred setup evens out the drop from the occasional A1.
As long as the A1 units still provide good results for Standford it's all good.
I'm not too sure how linear the points scaling is for processing cores but my quad running at 4 GHz gets 8-10k depending on the WU and how heavily I'm using the computer.
Nice video Kyle. However I wonder if this card would make sense in a 5x1 portrait setup. Although at that kind of resolution it just seems like you may as well CrossfireX two regular 5870s and actually turn on some of the graphics options.
That 1760 WU is one of the older A1 units. They are not known for being very efficient.
If you can I would try getting windows SMP working. I've abandoned my notfred's clients ever since the A3 units came out and I rarely get assigned A1 units anymore. I don't know if this is just my...
Anyone have pictures of the three modes without the wire-frame? I'm curious how big of a difference the extra polygons make to what the end user actually sees.
Great to have you back Syribo, it's always good to see people return after a hiatus.
I hear you about the heat from a box being too much, last summer we had one hell of a heat wave here in Seattle and I had to shut down for a good three weeks.
Glad to hear you got everything all fixed up for...
I chose option 2, but I take maxed out to be the highest possible settings that a game natively supports, AA and AF included. If you include the highest possible driver settings then why not third party utilities like nHancer where you can jack up AA to 8xSSAA or higher which makes just about...
