I have a setup like this. We have a crappy modem/router from our isp and I have an openwrt flashed router. I just plugged the openwrt into the crap router.
Beforehand I set the openwrt model to give out 192.168.1.xxx ip's and set its ip to be 192.168.1.1
The crap router runs 10.0.0.xxx ip...
Ok so me and my neighbor are trying to come up with a way we can "share" a seedbox. I have the crappy cable internet ( but with 3 kids, Im always broke) and he has pretty good DSL (thats truly unlimited, unlike my cable) What we would like to do is have one box both networks can use, sort of a...
Kids use their Kindle fires for 1) games 2) reading 3) media consumption
I use my nook color for 1) reading 2) media consumption 3) RDP into my desktops 4) as a DLNA compliant remote control
Honestly, unless you are consuming media of some sort or web browsing theres not a lot to be done...
Ok, Im a huge Windows fan, and heres what I have at my home.
WHS V1
Pros - easy to setup, bare metal backups, drive pooling
Cons - EATS hard drives, only way to really fix it is to reinstall, OR even better sometimes theres a file conflict and you have to delete the offending file...
Cool, figured it wouldnt hurt anything but wanted to make sure. So far I havent had any IP conflicts (10.0.0.24 is pretty high up there so DHCP hasnt tried to give it away, I did it as a test to see how setting static IP worked on win7 machine and got lazy and havent changed it back)
The router...
Is it possible to have some of the pc's on my lan be set to static IP and some of them just get a IP from my router via dhcp? Right now I have my router set to hand out Ip's from 10.0.0.2 to 10.0.0.33. My Freenas Box sits on 10.0.0.34, and I set up my WHS on 10.0.0.24 both static ( I realize...
Uh yeah. So I was reading this with an open mind right up until he said
"Rather than position Lion Server as a separate, dedicated server platform, its now available as an app that can be downloaded and installed on any compatible Mac. That means you can nominate one of the Macs on your...
Network setup is as follows
Internet--->Westell 4 port gateway /wireless acces point /router ---> internal lan
Im using 3 of the ports off the Westell and the wireless access point. Using DHCP but soon to change that.
Right now I am just fiddling with some stuff from outside my...
Just out of curiousity how close to being full on youre drives are you? My whs slows down a lot once a drive reaches over 90% full. Also, just an fyi a ton of small files chokes the speed also
So out of curiousity I looked at that Nexenta stuff.............wow, you have to be an OpenSolaris employee, a Linux diehard bleed penguin blood, or a huge glutton for punishment.....seriously, the FAQ is longer than most NAS OS whole friggen site.
SInce you asked what has worked, I am...
Also,if you have a dvd drive u can use for the install I would leave those off. Unless you planned on using the server to rip. I wouldnt though, seems the less you install/enable the better. I wouldalso reccomend a good gig speed nic, intel preferred.
Wow, just....................wow.

Everyone involved at Cisco and all the US officials involved should be charged.
If it were me I would look into an older version of Freenas. ( I believe theres been a parting of ways of some of the dev team with it splitting into 2 offshoots so...... not really sure about the new version. 8 and above. ) But you also have to realize I have used it for a while now and its...
I once saw an analogy posted here that I really agreed with
Creation>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Consumption is the same as
Desktop>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>tablet ( IE Ipads, Galaxy etc, not necessarily the full fledged tablets with a full blown Win7 install.
So basically, I use my tablets for web browsing...
Hahaha. A laptop is what you use to RDP into your desktop from the living room to get real stuff done ;)
Honestly OP you dont seem to know what you want.
As an avid tech-head with 3 children I would suggest seriously considering your needs, and save all the money you can save for the "oh...
Yeah, if I was Netflix, Id say screw it. I would pack all my servers and ship them on over. You already have a hugely established name and who gives a rats ass if the stream is coming from Nebraska or Kukukilimanjaro ??? And just to be an ass I would delete all content that had any subtitles...
When Windows has a Linux emulator (WINE) or has to come with a way to boot another companies OS (bootcamp) Ill be concerned for the longevity of MS.
Ok, so I went with PFSense as my poor stock wrt54g v5 couldnt handle my households demand. I want to still use the 54g as a wireless access point and a switch. I understand disabling DHCP etc, but wanted to know what was the more correct IP to set the 54g at, 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.2.1 ...
if C = We and P = dont and V= care
then all I can say about arguing the statistical portion of this is all very retarded,
and C(P)V
Seriously, this had gotten retarded. All the guy wants to do is have another lil server box for his growing media collection.
@ OP. I would...
If your comfortable with it I would think some sort of ZFS would be the best. Personally I am not, and use Win-machines. I have 2 WHS V1 boxes, one for use, one for backup. And I run checksums to make sure the files are still safe. I would think regardless of the OS or filesystem, having them...
@ OP, what I am considering doing is building a freenas based server with the ability to access it from outside my lan. I am running dual WHS boxes and will probably just put whatever I think Ill need on the freenas box , that way all my stuff isnt open to the outside world. Plus I personally...
Another thing you learned the hard way is..........a server isnt a real backup solution. Aside from the ZFS stuff. And TBH I avoid any of that mess like the plague due to the fact I dont have time to learn a new OS and god forbid you ask any kind of *Nix/BSD question without first researching...

is one cool pic, Id definately consider that as my desktop background ( assuming it was my machine, lol)
Love the red case too. I built my daughters an atom based sff last year and the size is really winning me over. The only thing that...
I dispute the Lian Li case because this is a work environment. Aesthetics takes a back seat to reliability. I am assuming here, but I bet theres room for a full size box, so why not take advantage of that and get a larger more standardized case? For a lot cheaper. I see you say the Lian Li has...
Really ?? A Lian Li for a small business? Are you in purchasing for the US military by any chance?:D
Have you looked into the premades like a Dell, etc? I believe they offer some sort of warranty and service agreement that may be worth it for a small business. I understand you can build...
Id just go with the cheaper one for now. If you need gig in the future , switches are cheap. I use this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156250 and like it a lot.
