Thanks for the link, westrock.. I checked out the post and I see that the issues were with the v1.2.26.5 firmware. They've since updated to 1.2.42.27 with includes the changelog: v1.2.42.27 6/27/2011 * Update SAS transport firmware to 4.10.3.0. * Add support disk which capacity...

Building an Array with 4TB Drives..

Just a follow-up on this.. Has anyone tried using 4TB drives on the RocketRAID 4320 yet? No 4TB drives are on their HCL, but they claim it "should work". Looking for real-world feedback here before going out and picking some up! Thanks!

Deceptive Product Photos of WD's new 2TB My Passport Ultra drive

Agreed. However, this isnt a simple matter of distortion. The overall design and proportions of the drive is different. This is a photo of how all the other drives in their "Ultra" line appear, featuring a a slimmer form factor, and one of the key differentiating factors between this line and...

Building an Array with 4TB Drives..

I currently have a RocketRAID 4320 with Hitachi 2 TB drives (5k3000s and 7K2000s). Alas, I am running out of space, and would like to upgrade to 4TB drives. Question to RocketRAID 4320 owners: Has anyone tried using 4TB drives on this controller? And if so, which ones have you tried and did...

    Hitachi 2TB Harddrive Owner's Thread

Question for RocketRaid 4320 owners: Have any of you tried using a 2TB 7k3000? Is it compatible? As some of you may know, Hitachi is shipping 7k3000s in their 7k2000 boxes now, but I already have an array of 7k2000s on my RR4320 that I want to add on to. Can I add these 7k3000s to my existing...

Mix Hitachi 7K2000 and 5K3000 in same array?

Awesome - this is great to hear. One of the drives in my array of 7K2000s just reported a few bad sectors, so I have a feeling I may have to replace them soon and I was hoping to do so with the newer 5K3000s. Now I can pick up a few replacements without hesitation.. As a side note: All of my...

Mix Hitachi 7K2000 and 5K3000 in same array?

SiRCYRO, Actually I haven't mixed them yet! I ended up replacing all of my WD20EADS's with 5k3000s (which are working well so far), but I haven't yet added to my 7k2000 array. I do have one standing by as a spare, and I'm starting to get a bit low on space, so I'll probably need to soon...

Is there a reliable 2TB drive for RAID use?

Reliability update: After only 2 weeks of operation, yet another 5K3000 I received from NewEgg has started to die and will be sent back. That makes 3 bad drives out of 5 drives from NewEgg (1 DOA, 2 with bad sectors). All 5 from Amazon have been issue-free.

Unable to wait for Hitachi's support to get back to me regarding the confusingly named "ML0NR580" firmware update they sent me, I went ahead and updated my 5k3000 w/ML6OA180 using the ML0NR580 firmware with hopes that they were compatible and would not explode. The result upon upgrade -...

    Hitachi 2TB Harddrive Owner's Thread

So I heard back from Hitachi Support regarding the upgraded firmware for my 5k3000 drives with the ML60A180 firmware, and they sent me the ML0NR580 firmware as an upgrade. Its still unclear how ML0NR580 relates to ML60A580 (which exists on my other 5k3000 drives), but I've asked Adrian to...

So I was finally able to get the Hi Test utility working on a 32-bit Vista installation I had kicking around on an old laptop hard drive that I threw into a spare desktop. It didnt seem to work on any 64-bit installs of either Vista, Win 7, or Server 2003.. However, I just realized that I dont...

    Checking drives before use

For each new drive I receive, before I trust it in an array expansion/build, I do the following: 1. Check SMART values to ensure drive has not been used (low power on hours count) 2. Use HD Tune to do a full read scan 3. Use HD Tune to do a full write scan 4. If a WD drive, perform the full...

That's right, folks - these were a few of the last drives out of the factory that were able to have TLER enabled, making them suitable for RAID use. I have 10 of these available for sale. Since these are no longer being manufactured, they are perfect for anyone that has an existing array of...

    HomeRun Dual Network Tuner: Thoughts?

Yeah, HDHR has been stellar for me so far.. Luckily, all of my digital cable channels were thrown in for free when I got cable internet. BUT, that may change at any time.. which leads me to my next question: What's the general consensus for encrypted cable or non-FTA (paid for) satellite?

So I've opened the 5 NewEgg drives - 3 had blue PCBs and 2 had green. 4 of them had firmware 580, one of them had firmware 180. MediaPortal is also worth a look, as it is pretty robust across various media formats and has fairly decent community support. It takes a bit more 'tinkering' than WMC to work nicely, but well worth it in my opinion.. :)

WD Caviar Black vs Green vs Blue

Yeah I tend to agree. This reminds me one of the first IT-related jobs I had 10-12 years ago or so - the servers in the lab had not been shut down over 5 years, but they company was moving to another location. The concern wasn't the downtime during the movement of the systems, but that they...

WD Caviar Black vs Green vs Blue

That's my suspicion as well. So having said that, do you think its not a good idea to have the controller spin down all array drives after a certain idle period of say, 3 hours? There certainly a power saving here (at least 100W with a full case) but if it increases the likelihood of drive...

    No raid for green drivers?

The WD Green drives did allow you to disable TLER up to a point, then WD caught on that people were using these drives for RAID instead of their more expensive enterprise level drives and put and end to it. Now the popular choice seems to be Hitachis, as they work in RAID arrays without any...
  38. U

Do I really need a SAS expander?

Hitachis are pretty good for RAID setups. A SAS expander is essentially a port multiplier. It takes one SAS port as input, and gives you a bunch more. Since SAS ports on the actual RAID controller card are generally expensive, this gives you a way to add ports more cost effectively, as well...

    16 x 2TB drives - RAID6 or RAID50?

I'm always nervous about having arrays that are larger than 10 disks or so. I'd suggest creating 1 RAID6 array of 10 drives, then creating a RAID5 array with the remaining 6. As you get more drives, you can convert the RAID5 to RAID6 and use OCE to accommodate the additional drives.
