Got back the root cause, it was pretty quick for them to diagnose. The phone home process was running through a squid proxy. While our internet connection was down, squid would resolve with a standard DNS failed page. This page was 1135 bytes in size.
Our version of the firmware had a bug in...
It tried, but an unrelated incident (backhoe>fiber) left the mail queued up.
Edit: actually no, it didn't. VMware did alert me, but the compellent didn't say anything. I guess it can't communicate in safe mode? I'd have to double check
I know, virtualisation did no more or less than expected. I guess what I mean is, that its hard to explain the difference to people and have them understand what actually failed. This has not affected my confidence in virtualisation because it had nothing to do with it! It sound so stupid, me...
Well its all "solved" now, just no root cause has been provided yet. The part that really annoys me, and will be costing me in the future is that this will shake my managers (and other team members) confidence in virtualisation.. I've been saying for years to anyone who listens, vmware is safe...
So we decided to upgrade our HDS AMS500 SAN last year (totalling about 50TB in a mix of sata and SAS) to what we thought would be the next version of their product, the AMS2100. We also had Dell knocking on our door about Compellent. Sounds great, they came in at a price point well under what...
What you have installed is the VCSA, which actually has nothing to do with the web client. The VCSA is just an alternative to instlaling vcenter on a windows server, probably if you don't want to fork out for the $$ on the windows license.
What you are looking for is the vSphere Web Client...
VLC has basic screen sharing built in, but obviously no ability to block access to the internet, and chat functions which are sometimes used in school environments.
Amazing, thanks for sharing. Any chance of tracking which company/person did this? Surely it was a rogue consultant and not the entire company, they could be interested in hearing about it.
What type of interfaces do you have available on your host?
pci-e
e-sata
spare NIC's
usb?
Depends on your budget and how much you care about the additional storage.
You are probably right, but if you want to see if you have ever connected at gigabit with the old cable on the new htpc, you can check eventvwr, most NIC's will normally log each time they are connected and at what speed (and sometimes duplex). Could confirm if something happened to the cable...
What OS, and what speed it it connected at? Could be duplex mismatch. Or could be one of the computers is terribly terribly broken, what are local file copies like?
I can't personally speak to how well a wiki scales, but wikipedia obviously still runs quite well. Or did you mean in terms of managing the wiki, not performance?
It also does have the benefit of keeping the files out of the database, they are only referenced and are stored on a filesystem in...
MediaWiki software could probably do those functions, uploading files and linking to them, also being able to paste in data and have it easily searchable.
Cant think of any downsides, maybe it becomes unmanageable at size?, and you would need your host to support it. Local server would make it...
I'm not familiar with any CPU's in socket G34, or in fact any AMD cpu's in the last year, but are you implying that this chip would offer similar performance, even if it was the same speed?
The 2600K is quite new tech, barely a year old.
For single threaded apps, i would imagine that higher ghz...
Dont forget that for some programs, expect vastly reduced performance. Make sure what you are doing is capable of being utilized by more than a single core, because you'd be surprised how little does, even these days.
2600K = 3.4ghz
6272 = 2.1ghz
Assuming I understand how you have it set up, the physical network card that you are assigning to your VM doesnt need an IP, or even TCP/IP. Just uncheck the tcp/ip box on the network card. Obviously don't uncheck it inside the VM.
5loth, why not just disable tcp/ip on your unlimited nic in the host machine? Then your host has no access or knowledge of your unlimited connection, and the VM will be unaffected.
I used to do this with virtualbox and a 3g card, it would only assign 1 IP per connection (obviously), so i just...
Any other cables running next to your vga cable? Is it a long cable? Try another cable, has fixed problems like this for me running long through a KVM.
Is this at work or home? If I lost a vCenter i'd be calling vmware asap.
As I'm sure you're aware, Google doesn't have much, with your post already being #1 for "Failed to initialize: vim.fault.InvalidNetworkInType"
sysinternals sdelete.exe ? I've never actually used it for secure deleting though, but I guess it does it well.

Not understanding the law very well, but I understand its illegal for person A to sell the chip (since they got it legitimately from intel and agreed to the T&C), but is it illegal for person B, to sell it to person C, neither of which have signed or agreed to such limitations.
Clonezilla can do a sector by sector copy. By default it will detect the filesystem and use appropriate tools, but you can choose Expert mode, and one of the options says to ignore filesystem and do sector by sector.
I've had a power supply be shoddy in the cold (ambient 22 or below), anything above that it always starts. And when its going for a while it stays on for days.
Did you set the network card to Bridged Mode? By default I think its NAT, which conserves IP addresses on your local network. Virtualbox does what you ask it to.
