The case moding bug has bit me and I am going to be using a Lian Li A71 case to create a GPU server.
I have stripped the A71 down to the basic aluminum frame. The motherboard I am using is the Asrock H510 BTC which is not a standard MB size. It is a 20.1-in x 8.8-in (50.1 cm x 22.4 cm).
The...
Thanks!
The other option I am considering is to use a VM on a Windows 10 Pro PC I am building. Goal is to reduce the number of PC boxes.
My current plan is to use the AMD 3600x with X570 board. I do not want to run Windows10 through ESXi since this will also be my son's gaming PC.
So I am...
The WFH has given me some time to clean up the garage, and I uncovered my OpenIndiana Box which I set up about 8 years ago. Since things moved to the cloud, we stopped using it; but I want to revive it.
It uses an IBM branded (ServeRAID BR10i) LSI logic RAID card for which I had flashed the...
Well the new disk is not showing SMART errors on boot (unlike the last disk).
However IRST is showing that the disk is not working properly and the RAID array is degraded. Resetting the disk back to fixed resulted in the same error after a few minutes. That is why I feel it is likely the SATA...
My main rig has two SSDs in RAID0 and 4 Hard Disks in a RAID10 all on the Intel Controller on the ASUS P8P67 Pro. The motherboard was replaced after the Intel SandyBridge chip-set issue.
One of the disks in the HD array started failing (SMART errors). I had an unused cold-back-up hard disk...
Folks:
What do the infrastructure guys think about this trend? These guys are putting storage in side the server to provide scale out architectures in a box similar to what the big cloud guys (Google, Amazon etc.) do internally. They seem to be doing well in the VDI space.
How do you think...
The problem is supposed to be due to heat. As you OC, it becomes hotter than SB. That may be due to the new trigate technology which may display non-linear thermal properties. While at normal operating frequencies it is cooler but as you ramp-up it is less so.
It just might be the case that...
IB and SB share similar micro architecture but the process technologies are different. Apart from the feature shrink the type of transistors are also different. The highest multiplier moves up 10% and clock speed should follow. Minor changes in architecture add another 5% or so.
So...
The treatment of the topics here is very detailed and probably not suited for someone new to the computer programming. It is like an encyclopedia and the examples are in a low level language which introduced a lot of detail. It is meant for a serious study of the subject of computer science...
It took them so long because they were not following the instructions from Comcast and Dell Tech Support. They did not, I repeat, did not, unplug the power cord while they waited for 5 minutes. Comcast had to send in the Geek Squad to tell them how to unplug the cord.
It is more likely to do with microcode which will not run the CPU at a high frequency or at high voltage or at a high sustained current level. There is a lower voltage threshold below which a chip will not operate regardless of the frequency and that is unlikely to be affected by binning...
I am not virtualizing (yet); I am running OI directly.
Any clues on how to control disk-spin downs?
I have done the following add 'setprop interval 24h' to /usr/lib/fm/fmd/plugins/disk-transport.conf and manually set the spindown time
cpu-threshold 30s
device-thresholds...
I got my Kill-A-Watt meter today. My server ASUS-WS-8B, Pentium G620, Mtron 16GB SSD, 5x2TB@5900 RPMHard Disk, 16GB RAM takes about 70-80 Watts. The power consumption did not vary much during use, so it is very likely the disks are not spinning down. The server of course does not go to sleep and...
Playing with the pliers, I realized that the pin comes out completely and the two which looked like they did not have a pin, also had one. Removed the pin, inserted the remaining washer thingy, pushed the pin back and it was easy :)
Thanks for the insight Thor.I did not realize you could pull and push the top.
There are two kinds of pins in the picture; one with the pulling mechanism and another without.
I tried using the screws which came with the fan, but the fan holes are not threaded and it is going to take some effort...
I am replacing the 2 pin 80mm fan with a 3 pin 80mm fan. The original fan was attached using these plastic push-pins which I presume help dampen the noise.
I am not sure how to reuse them.
The way they are now, they are too wide to be pushed in. Are these one time use?
Or do I use a plier...

Thanks for the pointer on backing stuff up.
I want to focus on power management. This particular server will see very occasional use. I think 95-98% of the time it will be idle. What do you suggest I do for power management?
I presume there are two distinct aspects here:
-> Overall...
You can very easily move the Q6600 to 3GHz (pin-mod if your BIOS does not allow OC). That should be free. 4GB RAM should be good enough. Assuming your motherboard can support a PCIe 2.0 card an HD68xx series card is around $150.
Also try to see how much you can get for your system. I have sold...
The top multiplier on IB is 63 vs 57 on SB, about 10% higher. Most SB run in the mid 4s under normal voltage. I think most IBs will run around 5.0.
There are very few applications which are CPU constrained, and more and more are becoming multi-threaded. But for applications using VMs or those...

Expectations are of about 5-6% due to architecture changes and a similar amount due to overclocking. This article claims 5GHz @1.17V with proper cooling.
Another claimed 4.8 with all cores active and 5+...
Did not see this posted though it has been going around for a few days now.

Revisiting the 2x64GB M4s in RAID-0. These random read performance (4K) is quite poor. And even with a single drive it was not too great. Is it the onboard controller which is the problem?
Yeah sad news. At least he had a successful career and died doing what he loved to do. Micron is the only US based memory chip maker and the firm is of vital national importance.
Gea, Latent and everyone else who has chipped in info; I have some great news.:D. Version 1.0 of my server is now about to go in Beta. I do not have a sys-ad background, and this is the first time I have set up a server. It has been an interesting adventure since my experience with *nix/solaris...
Thanks.
I was able to install it using the commands in the comment section of the wiki.
I am now able to access the SMB share from my Mac.
Just to educate this noob, what is the difference between accessing the folders via AFP vs SMB?
Also is there a way I can update the nettalk version to...
Thanks a lot Latent. Right now the pool is empty so there is nothing to import/export :). It took me some time to get the SMBs to work so I just do not want to mess with something which is working.
I also logged into my customac. I can see the the OI server. But I can not connect to it. I enter...
Folks:
Is there a way to save the ZFS settings created by napp-it and the port it to a new machine? I want to reinstall OI but was hoping that I do not have to recreate all the napp-it stuff for ZFS.
Latent:
1. Very interesting note about switching to AHCI requiring a reinstall. Will try that.
2. Right now, the server hangs when I try to put it in suspend mode. I have all C-States reporting enabled in Bios (not Auto). So I think it will never go down to the lower power mode which is bad.
3...
I was trying out the AHCI mode but for some reason OI does not boot in it. I get to grub and the OI splash comes, and then the system hangs, requiring a hard power down. I have turned it back to IDE and can boot.
=============================
I think the AHCI problem may have something to do...
I finally got down to assembling the machine this weekend :). I am not virtualizing anything yet; just want to set up the home server. Some questions
(1) How to make a disk attached to the onboard controller visible?
I have attached four 2TB disks to the IBM BR10i flashed to the LSI IT...

I have a reasonably complicated scheme using symlink to store stuff on the SSD vs Hard Disks.
When I do a backup using WIndows and ask for a system image it tries to use data from both the disks.
I was not sure how it would work out. Also for some reason the Windows rescue disk image I had was...
It does. SB chips are rated 1333MHz for the memory controller. I tried running 4x 1866@CL9 and could not make it hyperPi stable.. I could run 1600@CL8 and it worked. Their is not much of difference in performance between these two settings so I am OK with it. IB chips will be default rated for...
It has been an year since I started the first build. I did some changes this weekend.
I migrated to the Crucial M4l 2x64GB RAID0 array from the 2x40GB Intel V-25.
The single drive performance of the M4 was comparable to the RAID0 performance of the Intel drives.
I had been running 2x4GB at...
