Thanks a ton _Gea, tons of great info. Once I get everything set up, I think I'll test Solaris with napp-it and nas4free. I'll also test re-silver/scrub speeds with 10/11/12 disk vdevs. I'll report what I find for future reference.
Looking at the used space on my VMs I'm currently using 250GBs (provisioned amount about double that) with 10 VMs mixed between various flavors/versions of FreeBSD,Linux, Windows Server, and Android. I plan on adding more, so I'd say my all flash pool should start @ about 500GB and I can add...
No real budget, and I already have the (24) 4Tb drives (18 in use 6 waiting for the upgrade). I will use the existing hardware in my sig for now with plans to build a 3 host esxi cluster in the next 6-12 months.
I don't have the ssds I plan to use for the flash pool yet , so for that I'd say...
Thx for the info!
So does this mean I can use it indefinitely for "development" , and put napp-it on top for GUI/interface?
What is known regarding the nature of Oracle's encryption? I find it hard to trust anything that isn't open source
What is the difference between using disk based or ZFS...
I started out running FreeNAS with (2) RAID-z2 vdevs each with (6) 3TBs drives. I have since then added a 3rd (6)disk vdev with 4TB drives and removed/replaced/resilvered the remaining 3TB drives. I'm going to setup a temp freenas box with the old 3TB drives to dump all my data to while I...
I am torn on this matter. On the one hand, most DDOS attacks I've seen/heard/read about seem to be pointless trolls causing problems for others for no real reason. On the other hand I believe DDOS could / can be used as a form of protest. If protesters form a line and deny shoppers access to a...
That sucks. When you are ready to update to latest ESXi maybe install to USB key (makes it easy to have a clone up on hand) and keep VMs separate in future.
Also here are some posts about ESXi config backup/restore so you don't need to re-do all your passthroughs...
It is. As I said, ethically questionable. It is not however, illegal as best I can tell.

"A practice known as "wardrobing," though not illegal, per say, is also...
I can't speak to what the best practices etc. are, but if it was me, I'd hook up new drive, let ESXi format it and then move VMs over with both connected. I have done things along this line before.
I'm not saying they won't make any money. I'm saying if you're going to sell your soul get paid a lot better than what ever you make from country with only 18M net users.
This whole encryption debate is so nonsensical and non-fact based, I almost wish they'd ban in nation wide just so they can see how stupid, pointless and powerless such a law would be.
Ok so you stop apple and google from using encryption great.....everyone will keep using open source...
I have 3/8 ID 5/8 OD. I suspect the main problem was the tubing (other amazon reviews also said that the tubing was not uniform thickness-to bad I didn't read before ordering)
I'd agree the compression fittings look better, but I don't see how they are doing anything to secure the tubing? At...
Am I the only one who, would just buy the needed drives and just return them to the store? As long as you have the up-front cash, you could do this for free. Maybe a little questionable ethically , but w/e. You could either buy multiple externals (maybe even from different stores) or just buy all...
I've administered various RAID levels (0,1,5,6,60) for years and various implementations (ZFS, mdam, FlexRAID/SnapRAID, various hardware RAID cards). While recently migrating a hardware RAID-5 to RAID-6 on a Dell server with a PERC H710p RAID card @ my office , I started thinking about what...
Need more info on Mobo, cpu, ram etc.
Freenas would be fine if you have ecc ram (or have back ups and dont mind the risk)
If you decide to go with FreeNAS make sure your HBA/expander are compatible. Their forums are great.
I don't see why windows wouldn't work (I would check size limits...
Thanks, I'll probably order that tubing and the spring clamps and see if I can re-use the same barbs. I feel like those spring clamps will provide a much more secure hold then compression fittings.
Currently using these fittings:
With this tubing
The tubing was not uniform in OD thickness, resulting in a tube literally falling out one day from top mounted rad and leaking all over my video card (thank god I used distilled water, no dmg)
Now I don't really trust either component and...
This is exactly what I was planning on doing. Then replacing the 1TB disks 1 by 1. Then online capacity expansion. Then I'll reboot and change partition sizes.
I figured it would take a few hours, you really think it will take days/weeks?
Yes all are SATA
Got a Poweredge T320 with PERC H710P currently has (3) 1TB drives in RAID 5
Want to migrate to (4) 3TB RAID 6 (I understand the write penalty, but boss is cheap)
What is the process for this? I was thinking adding a 3TB drive and do a RAID 5 - RAID6 Migration. Then replace each of the 1TB...
This breaks down the pro/cons of ZFS vs a simpler JBOD style setup pretty well - ease of setup/administration vs performance.
As for needing a lot of ECC - I'm using 16GB of ECC but could probably get away with 8GB. I've seen Freenas setups with 20-30TB on 8GB of ram as long as your not...
My 1st opinion on what to do would be to include a much more descriptive thread title :/
My 2nd opinion would be to look at FreeNAS or another ZFS schema. Use RAID-Z2 (RAID 6 equivalent ) at a minimum. Having only 1drive worth of parity (RAID 5) is no longer considered very safe b/c of the...
Was just being facetious. It wouldn't be normal for it to be that big but it is cooked up. Pretty sure if you had enough you could make a rock any size you wanted. However, IMHO your better off abstaining lest your keyboard start looking like that guys.
I'll post some SSD test when I build mine, I'm putting a 512GB samsung sm951 in the m.2 slot. Afaik up till now most motherboards didn't have 4 pci-e lanes for the m.2 slot so to get pull speed people had to use an add-in card. I'll be interested to see if the m.2 slot in my RANGER VII will be...

If one user decides to actively download data across LTE it can degrade service for the entire tower? First of all this is simply not true, it isn't...
Seriously. If its 1/100 of a percent stfu and stop bitching. No one likes to hear millionaires bitching over pennies(to them). If it takes such and elite haXor to steal data, then its not like they are all on the same tower slowing some ones exp down.
Thanks I didn't realize they were tested in such high heat.
After looking through some [H] reviews I'll get the boss to spring for a Seasonic SS-660XP2 and use a 8 year old XP computer
so that there is less chance of an excessive load on 3v or 5v. To bad this software won't work on windows 7.
