We'll have to agree to disagree on your first point, but I do agree with you that many storage vendors make the administration and operation of a system far more difficult than it needs to be.
Quite honestly I've yet to see a workload that "requires" SSD or super fast controllers. SSD/SAS...
And I don't doubt that your story is entirely accurate, however I'm sure I could find a similar story for every vendor out there. We all have issues from time to time and we make changes to prevent those issues from ever happening again. Judging an entire company and an entire product line...
In reply to C0m0dor and FLECOM, I think your comments are based on what you've seen with the existing NetApp controllers and OS. This product is an entirely new hardware platform and an entirely new OS built from the ground up specifically for use with SSD Flash. While I agree that the proof...
Just to play devil's advocate, a lot of the software out there is in one way or another covered by export restrictions. Even though everyone knows the regulations do little if anything to stop the export of restricted technology the companies have to play the game and provide some sort of...
I see this question come up often and the question really shouldn't be does "does vendor A use hardware or software RAID?" the question should be "why do i care?"
At the base level all RAID is software, the only difference is whether or not that software is embedded in a customized ASIC...
RAID-DP is now an approved type of RAID6, originally it wasn't as the specific method of doing dual parity was different than the original standard hence the DP moniker. NetApp has used it by default (and as the recommended best practice) for over three years now. RAID-4 is only still...
I reload on a Dillon 650
The original brass (that batch at least) is once fired Lake City I bought from a guy online for $85 So total cost for me to load the 1800 rounds done in that batch was about $360
So being there for the actual tests (I did the CS testing) I'd like to respond to a couple things.
In response to the "they must have done something to rig the testing" argument.
First off understand that we were there on a saturday and other than the 4 testers the only other people in the...
found the problem, turns out it was something silly. When i connected the other two drives the motherboard decided they should be "disk 1" and "disk 2" while relegating my array to "disk 3" so the system was trying to boot off the data drives and failing (and hanging). All i had to do was go...
K, here's my dilemma
I have an ASUS A8N32-SLI deluxe. I Built the computer using 2 raptor 74's in raid0 for the primary OS drive attached to ports 1&2 on the nVraid controller. Additionally I have 2 storage drives that I would like to connect to ports 3&4 as single non-raid drives.
When...
Famine,
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
I'm not even going to get started refuting your points since everything you've said is so completely off base.
thanks,
Basically the software load is Windows XP pro and Office 2k3. Plus some novell stuff and a few other small apps. My best estimate of the load size is around 7gb so even though it would fit on 8gb drives it wouldnt leave very much headroom at all for files, swapping, etc..
Thanks...
Good idea, but since what we need are the smaller drives I figured I'd ask the [H]ard community first since we always seems to have this sort of thing lying around from old upgrades.
Thanks for the offer but hard drives smaller than 10GB aren't useable as they wont hold the software load with enough headroom leftover. Also they need to be IDE as none of these systems have SCSI cards.
But again thanks for the offer
Guys,

As you all may know I blasted Valve in the CS:S is beta article and one of the things i blasted them about was not listening to the community.
Prior to the HL2 release they said over and over again that there would be no HL2 multiplayer and that CS:S was the multiplayer. The community has...
Exactly right, with the lack of admin tools right now it's a complete nightmare to police a server. unlike with 1.6 where it was a simple matter of (open console, status, amx_ban "player") now its (open console, rcon_password password, status, rcon banid 0 "steamid", rcon kick "player", rcon...
something else I want to make clear, this article looked at the game from an admin perspective only. Since CS is multiplayer only it requires someone to have setup a server for you to play on. And the enitre point of the article was to point out that the lack of admin tools and features make...
CS works just fine now
The only real problems with it from a player persepctive is the lack of maps.
Other than that all the problems relate to admin tools
nothing that you can track yourself. There are a few stats programs that have limited support for CS:S such as Psychostats 2 which we currently use at [H]ard|Gaming however there are some recent reports that the log files may be missing or misreporting kills so the accuracy of those stats is in...
Good points, and I could even be convinced to agree with you if the timeframe we were talking about was back when you were involved with firearms. However the last year has see Valve discontinue that community supporting attitude. It took months and months and months of near constant...
The focus of the article was that CS:S was not ready to be released. Released implies that the game was done, ready for prime time and all features were present. The secondary focus of the article was to show that Valve has no concern for the needs of the server admins who run the game and...
Hello? Valve unlocked the game almost 24 hours ago, these people are complaining because Valve's Steam authentication servers apparently can't handle the load and they are unable to play the game that they have purchased due to being unable to authenticate. Not because the game hasnt been...
the existence of sv_cheats=1 isnt the problem, the problem was that sv_cheats=0 on the server didnt disable it. And it allowed far more than getting some extra money. There are numerous screenshots of cvars enabled with sv_cheats=1 that allow wallhacking and a map overlay in normal gameplay...
