I'm going to be moving to Shanghai in August and would like to know what's the best way to buy computer hardware there. NewEgg has a Chinese site -- has anybody used it? Any other Chinese sites to recommend, or should I just stick to ordering from US sites and having them ship to China? I could...
This is assuming rechargeable batteries of some kind, like NiMH. I have 10,000 mAh (=10 Ah) NiMH D batteries from all-battery.com. If you consider my HP laptop battery is 5000 mAh at 18.5V. 18.5 / 1.5 = 12.33. So if I had thirteen D batteries I could charge up my HP laptop twice? Am I doing my...
Is there some sort of a device that would let me charge my laptop with off-the-shelf AA, C, or D batteries? I've Googled with little success.
I have a device that can charge USB devices using AAA batteries. I can put rechargeable batteries in there and the device can also recharge the...
I'm currently using an old Raptor 74GB (WD740GD, 10k rpm) as my primary drive. I just ordered a Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB 32MB buffer. Should I use that instead as my application drive? I do pretty standard desktop stuff, a little bit of stuff in Photoshop.
This is quite old but the Storage...
I use them to resize windows, which I set up in Girder. So I basically just need three function keys plus three volume ones, or just six or so function keys total.
I used to have an Apple G5 keyboard, the previous generation before the current dumb aluminum ones. But it's dead now and I'm looking for a replacement. I could just get another one for about $45 but was wondering if there is a similar and better option, say under $100.
I really like the G5...
I just got a G2400W and love it. But the green power light is a little annoying when watching movies. I'd like to black it out somehow. I don't think there's a setting for it so I'm thinking maybe I can paint over it. A friend suggested black nail polish. What do you think?
I just bought it off Enter Computers for $380 (free shipping). Not many reviews on Reseller Ratings but I put it on my credit card so they will cover my ass.
I want a 24" that has 1920x1200 (1080p) resolution. For reference a brand new Dell 2408WFP is currently $599.
There are some decent ones on craigslist, like this Westinghouse for $375.
Are there any caveats with buying off of craigslist? Do warranties transfer over?
Would I just be...
My buddy wants me to fix his computer. Seems like the mobo is fried, doesn't POST. It's an Abit IS7, not sure about the CPU.
He got a new mATX case for it. So he needs a new mobo that is mATX, has AGP. This Asrock is pretty much the only one I can find that fits the bill. My only concern is...
I have Outlook 2003 running on my desktop. I manage my Tasks, Contacts and email from it. I also have a Windows Mobile Smartphone that syncs with it. I just got a laptop and want to sync all the Outlook data (Contacts, Task, etc not just email) with the desktop. Is it easy to do this without...
The 24" LCD is totally worth it.
The Raptor is worth it if you already have a lot of storage space. If you don't, it might be a good idea to get a really fat drive in addition to it. If that's too much money, then just replace the Raptor with a a fat drive.
The case does look pretty iffy...
Windows XP, SP2, totally updated
Chaintech AV-701 sound card
I don't want to hear any Windows alerts, so going into Control Panel -> Sound, I set the profile to No Sounds. But now, the sound alerts are going to my PC speaker (the NES-sounding speaker that's in the case)?
I've done this...
It's been six months since I last built a system and I'm a little rusty. Below I have listed which components I have selected and the rationale I have for getting them. Please look over it and tell me if I'm wrong about anything.
My goal is to make a fairly quiet system and then overclock it...
I haven't built a new machine in over 6 months now and during that time I've been paying less attention to HardOCP news, so I need a bit of a refresher for building my new box. So let me explain what I believe to be accurate about OC and you guys tell me if I'm wrong or have forgotten anything...
I am about to build my new box. The V1000 flips the board layout upside down so that the CPU socket is on the bottom instead of the top. Will the XP-120 fit on an A8N-SLI in my case? Thermalright's site only lists a mobo compatability chart (the A8N-SLI is compatible.
Is the XP-120 the king...
My AP is a D-Link Extreme G so I plan to get the matching DWL-G520 so I can take advantage of the 108mbps. Good idea? Does D-Link's Extreme standard work with any other manufacturer's?
Doesn't it even really matter which card to get these days with the standard having settled down?
If I'm a client connected to a WiFi network, is there a way or tool that I can find out information (IP, MAC, etc) about the other clients that are connected to the same network?
Right, I meant the other way around.
Are 1.8" drives easy to replace/install? Will it be economical to go with the 20GB from IBM and then replace it with a 40GB from NewEgg?
I'm thinking about buying either an IBM X31 or X40. I know a lot of people get the cheapest RAM option from the manufacturer and then buy all the RAM they want from somewhere else because it's cheaper. I'm wondering if this is feasible also with HDDs. The X31 uses 1.8" drives (same as the iPod)...
Thank you for all your opinions. Allow me to clarify my priorites:
* Cost is not a huge factor. A difference in $1000 is justifiable if it looks a little better, is thinner and/or has more features.
* I will not do Apple.
I think both the IBM and the Dell are about equal in the looks...
I'm thinking about getting the IBM X40 as it fits my priorities of having a thin 12" notebook. I'm pretty much looking only at 12" models as 10" is too small and I don't want a 14/15". The other major candidate that I'm looking at is the Panasonic W2, featured on Dynamism and iCube. Are there...
