my guess is with the market moving towards streaming style gaming, handheld makes sense for Microsoft as they behind Nintendo and Sony in hardware sales. Also with MS investing alot in AI will give them access to alot bare metal hardware that could be used for dedicated streaming sessions.

I would look at several nodes that are cheap SFF, run ProxMox, and Ceph for storage/local cluster (no NAS needed) and have fun.

Should be okay if both cards have decent Linux drivers. If I had an extra slot I would test for you. Currently passing a P400 to an LX container vs a full VM without issues for plex encoding.

proxmox is pretty light IMO. not much worse in terms of overhead than esxi. it has really been the choice for a lot home labers for a while now

Plenty of good cheap switches. Now if you plan do Unifi at least get a managed switch. Plenty of good ones with 1Gb and 2.5GBe.

it just means the wan port can only give 1gb. but the lan traffic is not affected. all clients can transmit at 1gb speeds

Unifi just came out with the Cloud Gateway Ultra with 2.5GB WAN connection for 129$. Throw in a UG+ Access point and you got something that just works :) and is much cheaper than that junk
