Just got my macbook yesterday, was playing with iMovie HD a bit. It crashes frequently when deleting video clips. And by frequently I mean every other time I try to delete a video clip, the application just quits.
And it's not just me...
Until now, Macs have always been more expensive hardware-wise, but
this has been offset by the fact that they tend to hold their value much better than Wintel machines.
So.. when it comes time to upgrade, you can sell the old Mac and apply that to the cost of the new one.
I think this was...
I don't even need one, since I'm so heavily invested in my Windoze digital audio workstation, but dammit... I just want to own a quad G5.
Maybe there's a dual-core Intel Mac Mini in my future instead. That'll make me feel better.
That is all.
It seems to me that a GF6800 should support all of the Aero features.
I have installed the nVidia forceware drivers that were just released, and I have the n'vidia tab in display properties now.
Mine is the PCI-E version of the 6800NU (Leadtek winfast) with 256MB display memory...
That's a much bigger number than the "2% market share" that's thrown around. The reason? People with macs replace their computer less frequently. This skews the market share results, because more copies of windows are purchased by people who replace their computers more frequently.
But in...
Look at this. Somebody on another forum saw the storefront in Flint, Michigan and then asked about the company's web site.
http://www.apple-computers.us/
They are NOT an authorized reseller (they don't come up in the reseller search on Apple's site), and the prices are ridiculously...
Workstation tests were compared with Windows XP SP2, and server tests were compared with Linux on x86 hardware.
http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2436
In summary, the G5 with OSX excels as a workstation, but sucks as a server. In fact, he uses the word "catastrophic" to...
I wonder if it's theoretically possible to swap out a mini's combo drive with one of the new slot-loading dual layer DVD burners that the imacs are coming with? Hmmmmm.
I didn't find out until today that my company has en employee purchase plan through Apple.
I would've saved 50 bucks on my mini that I got a couple months ago. Oh well.
That's right. It's on Apple's home page now.
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/may/02cobb.html
I don't really think this is a great idea... does anybody seriously think that these things WON'T mostly be used to trade porn?
Hell, that's what I would be using it for if I...
Overall I'm satisfied with Tiger's performance on the mini, it's as fast or faster than Panther in most cases. Safari 2.0 is noticeably quicker (I think I'm supposed to say "snappier"). Resizing windows is still rather sluggish, and Safari 2.0 still doesn't handle pages full of animated gif's...
After all of Apple's hype that if you order by the 25th, you'd receive Tiger on the 29th...
I ordered way back on April 13th, and just got my email today:
Figures. So I'm guessing I'll get it sometime next week.
*edit* Apple systems are screwed up. Fed Ex just delivered...
The fan on the nForce4 chipset on my NEW Asus A8N-SLI motherboard has started making noise and vibration already.
I haven't examined it too closely, but the fan has a thin aluminum shroud around it. Has anybody replaced one of these with an aftermarket chipset cooler? Any...

April Fool's Day is not the best day to announce your product is released, but hey... Google did it a year ago with GMail.
By the way, anybody see GMail's login page today?
And they're increasing everybody's mailbox size to 2GB!
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/devices/flash.aspx
It's a guide to choosing a flash-based player.
Gee, it looks like the iPod shuffle certainly fails the test. It meets none of microsoft's criteria. Except for the "has flash memory" part.
I mean, who would...
Yes, according to Symantec, as Macs get more popular, they will increasingly become the target of attacks.
Or, just maybe, as people leave windows computers behind, Symantec wants to make sure people are still buying their software.... ...
According to rumors anyway... it'll be announced in early April (April fool's?) and in stores by the 15th. Somehow I doubt my mini will be eligible for the free upgrade though.

Dual-core G5 chips coming later this year (along with dual-core Pentium and Athlon64 chips).
But a 4-cpu powermac G5 certainly would be nice.

All day long, I'm hearing a subdued, somewhat rhythmic (once per second) seek from the drive in my mac mini. It's not a click of death or anything, just some disk activity.
According to the activity monitor, the "data out" shows 1024 bytes/second continuously. Nothing being read in however...
Motherboard is an asus A8N-SLI (single 6800 right now).
Just to keep things simple for now, I have my memory locked at DDR400 speed (it's Corsair XMS TwinX DDR400) and I'm not touching the PCI-Express speed or anything else.
Prime95 runs fine (at least for the 20 minutes that I let it) at...
I have my new Asus A8N-SLI board in.
A matched pair of Corsair TwinX 512MB sticks are installed, in both blue slots. According to the manual, this is the configuration to use for dual channel mode (slots A1 and B1, or 1 and 3 if you count from back of case to front)
Sandra 2005 shows...
This has been duplicated by several people over on mac-forums.com as well.
This program:

...is an open-source 3D space simulator, which is a very sweet app I might add. At least on my Windows machine.
If you try to run it on a mac mini (or any new G4)...
Fedex dropped off my mini this morning. Ordered on 1/29.
It's a 1.42GHz/512MB/80GB/Bluetooth/Airport.
First of all, damn OSX is just so nice to look at. :)
Just been tweaking settings, haven't installed any new apps yet, except Firefox. The good news is that mine came with iLife '05...
I'm going to be getting an Asus A8N SLI.
I have a matched pair of Corsair TwinX 3200C2 modules in my existing system (even though it's not dual channel).
I was going to pick up a second pair of the same modules for the new mobo. How much will that affect overclockability?
I received my DVI to S-Video adapter, which I'm gonna use to hook my mini up to my TV occasionally.
Now I just have to wait until 3/1 for the actual computer to ship.
Evidently it's a popular accessory for the mini-- I got mine in less than a week, now apple's web site says 4-6 weeks.
I have a ConvertX box on my PC (for analog video capture and hardware MPG2 encoding) and it's USB 2.0 based. However, according to Plextor's site, it only has Windows drivers.
They also sell a similar box called ConvertX PVR which is the same thing, except that it has a cable/satellite input...
The last Apple I really used was the Apple //c my parents had when I was a kid.
Mainly I wanted to play around with OSX, and have a convenient portable little media server that also runs most applications well. It's small enough to take it with me wherever I would use a laptop, as long as...
I just put in my new 160GB SATA Hitachi drive and I'm in the process of moving over files from my old WD 80GB SE drive.
I noticed that every few minutes, at regular intervals, this drive makes a funny noise. Sort of a wimpering sound. Like you put a cat into a pillowcase and sat on it.
I...
aside from my hard drive issue (new drive is one the way, just in case... see my other thread) I want to see if I'm getting the expected performance from UT2K4. Yes, there are some hardware upgrades in my future, but I'd rather wait until Doom3 / HL2 are actually available. See sig for what I...
During the last part of the installation of UT2004, my WD800JB ("special edition") hard drive made a solid sounding "thwack" sound. Much louder than any other clunk I've heard from a hard drive, and I've heard the click of death from other drives before.
This also occurs within a minute or...
