try booting into safe mode if you can then goto start, run, type in msconfig, and on the first tab check bootlog. rebo tthe computer and restart normally. then when it hangs power dwn the machine and reboot into safe mode again and check the bootlog. C:\Windows\ntbtlog.txt is hte boot log

well if the HDD is EIDE then you need a EIDE harddrive and if it's SATA then SATA. but there is ATA-6 and ATA-7 and SATA for laptops. you notebook needs ATA-6 or ATA-7 and there is no interface changes between ATA 6 or 7. ATA 6 is ATA 100 and ata 7 is ata 133 so it doesn't matter.
