Keep your receipts. The company I work for bought a few Sony monitors, LCDs and a couple notebooks. They were all nice and generally did what they were supposed too. The biggest problem we ran into everytime we needed warranty repair service we had to provide proof of purchase and it was...
You have to replace the board with a system board designed for that notebook model. You can buy it from Dell spare parts or search ebay or go to a vendor that specializes in notebook parts such as parts-people.com or stork systems for example. I wouldn't expect the board to be that expensive...
You'll pay 30% more then pretty much any other brand to get if fixed. I work on alot of IBM laptops and many of the repairs I do are due to accidents like drops, getting them jammed in automatic doors, and spills.
IBMs are just like any other laptop as far as components go, they're just...
The company I'm doing work for now doesn't have thousnads of these, more like 250-350 units. Items 1 and 2 that you mention above are problems I see consistantly with the 40s and 41s.
It only takes a drop of liquid to kill a system board. If I were you, I would buy a new laptop and part out your damaged laptop on ebay to help cover some of the cost of the new system.
As far as component costs, $500 for a laptop systm board from a reputable dealer or manufacturer's...

2. Laser 286, 2MB ram, 20MB hard drive. had Geoworks, a cool little gui.

go to a hardware store and get a pair of safety glasses with side shields. You will find thay come in handy when your working with power tools. They aren't very expensive.
I did computer repair at a bearing and steel manufacturer for six years. I used to pull Gateway towers out of operator pulpits that would have 4 inches of dirt and soot in the bottom, found a dead mouse in one. Heck, in the bearing plants, some of the old HP printers I had to work on had to be...
Heh, I was looking at my Box. Above the oval that reads "saving U.S. Dollars 120" is a sticker, peal it off and it says "free half-Life2 game) and there is a logo and a picture of the hero (can't recall his name". So it is actually on the box, it's just covered.
I'm with you tho, I'll take...
