    Samsung Galaxy S24 / S24+ / S24 Ultra

I try to keep myself centered within that 20%. No posts about screen grain from me! And no need to crow about receiving a security update before others. I haven't noticed a difference in fluidity, scroll lag, or animations with the March update. But I also didn't have any concerns with those...

    Samsung Galaxy S24 / S24+ / S24 Ultra

On prior Samsung phones the built-in VVM app was accessible in the apps list/launcher as Visual Voicemail (iirc). But I haven't found a way to force it to appear in the launcher on the S24, even though it is visible as a separate app under Settings > Apps (after enabling Show system apps). This...

    Samsung Galaxy S24 / S24+ / S24 Ultra

You might be able to tap the three-dots menu in Samsung's Phone app and select Visual Voicemail from there. If you're lucky that will enable Samsung's built-in visual voicemail app. But it's possible that this might not work (though it does work for me - including transcriptions), and that you...

    Samsung Galaxy S24 / S24+ / S24 Ultra

The Face ID feature on non-iPhones seems to be easily tricked based on what others have reported. So I don't use it. I haven't had problems with fingerprint sensors on P6P, P8P, Pixel Fold, various Samsung devices (including S24+ and Z Fold 4), and some others. Other than some initial...

    Samsung Galaxy S24 / S24+ / S24 Ultra

I've had similar issues on two or three occasions with a Motorola Edge+ 2023. On those occasions I got the phone to restart by holding down the power button (or maybe it was power + volume) for a lengthy period - must have been at least 30 seconds. It seems to be a known intermittent issue...

    Samsung Galaxy S24 / S24+ / S24 Ultra

I do prefer physical SIMs for maximum flexibility. No need to worry when moving from Samsung to Google to OnePlus to etc. Also was no problem moving to Apple - until the 14 series. It's probably good that I'm not an iOS fan (too locked down; garden walls too high).

Do you have a working SIM that you could swap into the S24U?

    Pixel 8 / Pixel 8 Pro / Pixel 8a

Do the 70+ers not matter? :D I'll be there someday. My parents are there now - and would keep their phones for 7 years or more if they could. But I'll replace their phones well before that point. The big benefit of the Pixel 8 Pro to me at the moment is the flat screen. But that benefit may...

    Pixel 8 / Pixel 8 Pro / Pixel 8a

S23 Ultra for me, unless rooting and de-Googling is a goal. Or unless a flat screen is a 100% requirement (I want it, but not enough to drop $1100 on an 8 Pro).

    Pixel 8 / Pixel 8 Pro / Pixel 8a

Well... Fi does (or did) have $700 off a Z Flip 5 with no trade-in needed, even for those with the Simply Unlimited plan. So they can have very good phone deals if you intend to stick around for 2 years to get all of the credits. It'll be interesting to see what they do or don't do for the Pixel...

    Pixel 8 / Pixel 8 Pro / Pixel 8a

I think the other $619.99 needs to be paid back over 24 months. Should be about $25.83 per month. So only the sales tax is due today.

    Pixel 8 / Pixel 8 Pro / Pixel 8a

They changed that about 3 years ago I think. It's installable now through the Play Store. I have it on a Samsung S23 Ultra and have also used it on a Z Fold 3. For some reason Google limits the Phone app's integrated visual voicemail feature to Pixels and maybe a few other phones. But...

    Pixel 8 / Pixel 8 Pro / Pixel 8a

You can use the Phone by Google app on other Android phones. The built-in visual voicemail feature probably won't be available, but you can use the phone manufacturer's app for that (but it probably won't be as good as Google's VV support).

Do you generally prefer smaller phones or larger phones?

Large screens are also good for those whose eyes are no longer 25 years old. And especially so for those whose eyesight was never good, even at a young age. Or for whom almost 30 years as a software developer has taken its toll. Even the best corrective eyewear doesn't truly compensate for...

    Pixel 8 / Pixel 8 Pro / Pixel 8a

I'm not a fan of the rounded corners. But it should be worth it if we get a proper flat screen. I would also like to see better cellular reception. On a few occasions I've compared a Pixel 7 Pro with an S23 Ultra in the same location and same carrier using the CellMapper app. The P7P usually...

    Crappy reception

They have a list here that implies that wi-fi calling is restricted to certain devices: https://www.telus.com/en/bc/support/article/wifi-calling-explained But it would be preferable to hear from other Telus users.

    Crappy reception

What provider and what phone? Some US providers - primarily Verizon and AT&T - do limit which phones they'll "allow" to use Wi-Fi Calling. If you're using one of those or a reseller that uses their towers, you may not be able to activate Wi-FI Calling. If using an Android phone then you could...

Which Dell laptops have the best keyboards?

I'm typing this on a Thinkpad P53. The keyboard is better than what is typically found on consumer-targeted laptops but it's a far cry from the legendary Thinkpad keyboards of lore. The keyboard on my work-issued Latitude 5591 is no worse than the P53's other than slight differences in the...

Anyone else think Samsung is a pathetic company

Can't think of any issues that I've had with my Samsung Note 2, 3, 4, 8, or 9 aside from slow/delayed Android updates. The only other Samsung products that I've owned have been their SSDs and RAM sticks with Samsung chips - which have been fine. So I haven't needed their customer/tech support...

Subscriptions - How much you pay and what it gets you?

There are a lot more cell towers needed here - more land mass to cover and lower population density. Those costs are spread across all subscribers. There may be other contributing factors, of course, including the 'g' word.

What the heck is going on with skyhigh smartphone prices ?

Indeed. Charge what the market will bear. Capitalism at work. Sometimes it works in consumers' favor; sometimes it doesn't. Right now, with smartphones, it doesn't.

What the heck is going on with skyhigh smartphone prices ?

I hope that the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL models will be more readily available (i.e. no 8-9 week ship times), given their higher pricing relative to the Pixel and Pixel XL. But I suspect that those hopes will be dashed... If they are not more readily available, then the high prices are likely to...

    Huawei mate 10 = Release Oct 16th

The Mate 9 is a good phone but their software support is poor. The last security update for the US version of the phone was more than 5 months ago, in early April. For that reason alone I will not consider the Mate 10.

    Cheaper phone with ads

Depends on how much I'm saving. If it's a $599 phone for $299 and the ads are inoffensive and relatively out of the way, then maybe. If it's a $229 phone for $179, then no. There are already too many ads invading almost every waking moment of my life to willingly allow more, unless doing so...
