1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Lots of hi-res image scanning and manipulation. Frequently multiple images at once, along with multiple apps running simultaneously. I'm a multitasking whore. A half dozen or more Firefox windows open at the same...
Just a thought: As long as one is considering the W100 price point, why not look at the Sony Vaio X? I have one and love the dang thing.
11" screen, 0.5" thick, 1.6 pounds. 128GB SSD, 2GB RAM, Win7, built-in 3G. Three battery options, two of which ship standard (S and X) - The tiny S battery...
Just received a Kindle 2 yesterday. While it has its shortcomings with respect to native PDFs, it's a great device.
I'm surprised that no one has pointed out that the Kindle is currently the only ereader that currently gives you any web browsing capability. Yes, it's primitive, but in...
Amen.
As a WoW newbie (play casually a few hours a week) the discussion in game and on the WoW forums assumes that everyone participating is level 70 or higher, and if you're not you're worthless. It's assumed that you will spend every waking moment of your existence living and breathing WoW...
Am wanting to put together a new system. I have some components cannibalized from other purposes that I plan to use. Performance is more important than budget, but at the same time I am not an overclocker or an XTREEM L33T user. ;)
I am an impatient son-of-a-BLEEP. I hate waiting for my...
Just got my 20% off coupon about 15 minutes ago. It all worked like a charm. $565.73 shipped.
(The only downer was that I have a $50 Dell gift card, which unfortunately cannot be used with DPA.)
Nuts, the ones posted over at TechBargains for today don't work on XPS... :(
When looking at the coupons dor sale on Ebay, how do you know if they've valid on XPS? I'd hate to spring for one only to find out that it was unusable.
WTF??
Damned verification won't work for me, and I've tried using all caps, no caps...
Idiot programmers... probably shouldn't have outsourced the web development to India, huh.
What are the respective price points? It will be easier to make a recommendation between the two, as well as possibly provide other alternatives (I've assuming we're talking below $500 for each).

I just bought a used Sager laptop that comes with an Audigy 2 NX. It should be here tomorrow; I'll post my take on it after I've had a chance to run it through its paces.
-Dan
[update. Budget slightly higher, two more contenders]
I've read until I'm blind. I'll be damned if I can decide which desktop replacement to get. All of the following have appeal in one form or another:
Sager 4750 (PCTorque)
17" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) Gloss screen
AMD 64 3200
128MB Radeon...
Don't you mean WSXGA+? I didn't think this was available with WUXGA. If it is, please tell me where you bought it, as I'm in the market for one... the highest resolution I've seen for this model is 1680x1050, not 1980x1200.
-Dan
Fair question, but I really don't want to fuck with cables or an external monitor. As heavy as these laptops are, they still can be carried under one arm (or over one shoulder)...
-Dan
The screen looks absolutely gorgeous, but the reason I didn't include it is that a lot of people are reporting returning them due to the amount of heat the 8790 puts out. Apparently it's a real problem.
-Dan
Gettin' me a lapt....err... brick.
Weight, mobility, and battery life are less of a concern to me than horsepower, screen size and quality, and upgradeability. I'll be taking it to and from my office, but not daily. Uses will be heavy Adobe CS, folding, some gaming albeit not a major concern...
Here's a price about $67 cheaper - in stock.

Resellerratings.com shows them to have a decent, but not stellar rating.

Seems the Arctic Silver is settling in a tad. I'm seeing 60C/60C under full load with side of case off and fan blowing.
I can't help but think that the reporting is off. I did a power-down from long-term full load about 20 minutes ago and immediately felt the heatsinks at the base: just...
This is driving me out of my [CENSORED] mind!!!.
I did some tests.
Under 100% load on both CPUs for 10 minutes.
Case closed, CPU1=70C CPU2=73C
Side off case, CPU1=65C CPU2=67C
Side off case, small fan blowing on CPUS, CPU1=62C, CPU2=65C
So I go out and get a bunch of Zip strips...
Everything has been rock solid. No crashes or lockups of any kind, even running two instances of F@H nonstop for a week straight in the background (so always under 100% load on both CPUs).
-Dan
60/63c on bootup (occasionally as low as 58c, but only saw that once), then increasing to 70/73c as load is applied.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll be stopping to get some Arctic Silver after work, as well as a beefier case exhaust fan. I don't have the tools (or dexterity) to cleanly cut a...
You don't have to be rude about it. I don't have time to check this board every hour of the day.
I said in my initial post that I'm using the stock heatsinks and fans that come with the MSI K9T Master2 FAR motherboard. Since the motherboard layout is nonstandard, you have to use those...
Dunno if this is normal or if I have a problem somewhere.
Dual Opteron 246s.
MSI K8T Master2 FAR mobo (nonstandard, so I have to use the heatsink/fans that come with the mobo)
Case is this one: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-170-015&depa=1
In addition to...
Am thinking about throwing a few more boxes at folding. What's the best bet for a sub-$200 box for folding?
I see IBM Intellistation M Pros on Ebay for $150-200 all the time. They're usually 667 or 733 PIIIs (dual capable) with 256-512MB RAM, 18GB SCSI drives. One of those plus $20-40 for a...
I'm going [censored] nuts!
This is a clean install of Windows, so there are no previous app installs, documents, etc. that the system is trying to access.
The CDROM shows up in the boot sequence and I can boot from CDROM. It's only when it gets to Windows that it goes AWOL. I have...
Man, I'm stumped on this one.
My bits, pieces, and parts arrived from Newegg yesterday, so I plopped down last night to put it together. System as it currently stands:
Motherboard: MSI K8T Master2 FAR
CPU: 2x Opteron 246
RAM: 1GB Mushkin ECC Reg. PC3200
SATA 1: WD Raptor 74GB
SATA 2...

Yep, Intel swung mightily and blacked AMD's kneecap....
Pretty underwhelming for something that was supposed to leapfrog the Xeon over the Opteron...
-Dan
I'm gunna try building my own (crosses fingers).
Just ordered from NewEgg:
ATI RADEON 7000VE 32M DVI/TV $32.00 Cheap-assed throw-away vid card; I needed to have an extra so I can have this system up and running at the same time as my old system. Will ultimately take Radeon 9700 TX from...
So....
How do you think a dual rig with the new 2.8Ghz Xeons (800fsb, 1MB L2 cache, DDR2 support, E64MT) would compare to a dual Opteron 246 rig? They're approximately the same price...
According to the promo blurbs at Dell, the E64MT will allow these new Xeons to run 64-bit XP and other...
Thanks for that last post; I hadn't checked Dell's price on the new 800fsb Xeons. Does anyone know if these mobos will take Registered ECC RAM? I've got a gig of Mushkin PC3200 already coming, and this may end up being a good way to go...
I may do the daily Dell coupon hunt for a few and see...
Ya know, the sheer amount of information to wade through right now when choosing a system to buy/build is daunting. Add to that the fact that the choices are not clear cut: Intel vs. AMD, XP vs. 64 vs. FX, Xeon vs. Opteron vs. MP... a lot of conflicting reports as well.
I initially thought I...
I appreciate the suggestions. Unfortunately:
Best prices of those you list, but hardly any options re: motherboards, hard drives, etc. Configuration too rigid, e.g., cannot remove RAID controller or get one configured without RAM, Raptors not an available option, etc.
Do not appear to offer...
