I don't believe there is any performance difference. They're "first edition" with production numbers on the heatspreaders (see 0447 and 0448 pictured). It says so on the small placard sitting on top of the box in image #3, but I accidentally cropped it while removing the corner of my monitor...

I paid $665 for an 8800GTX on launch day with overnight shipping and it was worth every penny.
On the other hand I'm now rocking a used GTX 570 that I got right here on [H] 3.5 months ago for the spectacular price of $265 delivered, and I am very happy with it.
Shrug.
Nice of them to compare to the card that I have (570), but even if I take +40% average at face value, it's not a compelling upgrade unless the price is REALLY good, which judging by the pricing of the 79xx series, it won't be.
At the very least there should be an option for "desktop" mode with start menu and all the metro stuff disabled. When the dev preview came out I assumed that there would be something like this in the final shipping version, ala "Windows Features", but the CP has me thinking they're going full...
The difference is that with Windows 8, it's designed with an entirely different set of inputs in mind, with the inputs that were previously used for every incarnation of Windows are an afterthought.
