Can my monitor wreck my computer?

Hi all, I have a Viewsonic LCD panel, and I think it has wrecked two motherboards and a laptop. Is that possible? When I touch the end of the VGA cable from the monitor and my case, I feel a mild shock. I can touch it 10 times in a row and every time I get a jolt. This happens with both...

    Carmack Reveals New id Tech

Yay. Another canyon followed by another tiny corridor. I think id must be a bunch of claustrophiles. I'll hold my applause until id creates a realistic outdoor scene that actually shows some out-of-doors.

Intel Entering Discrete Graphics Card Market in 08

m2h mentioned this, but does anyone know what this will mean for open source/linux friendly drivers? I'd heard that Intel had opened its graphics drivers, and if this is so (and remains so) you can sign me up for an Intel graphics card right now.

I think you'll find that Lisa Simpson's rock kept away tigers, not bears. That may have been what was causing the crashes.

Google Responds To Billion Dollar Lawsuit

You'd think that would be true, but it is not. The Grokster case a few years back argued the same defense and were still shut down. It is curious that gun makers aren't held responsible when their products kill people, but software makers are held responsible when their products allow...

Google Responds To Billion Dollar Lawsuit

Actually, most warez sites don't have any content hosted. This is what angers me. Many clearly state they simply index files, and host none. They state that what they do can also be done with a google search. Yet they still get charged and convicted. How is this different? Again, Google...

Yes, I read that article and it was a good one. Would still like to see something similar here, mainly because the [H] "perspective" is more my style.

Google Responds To Billion Dollar Lawsuit

Certainly America is not the only country where this is true. It's just unfortunate that it is the country where it seems to be happening the most in the tech world, and that the fact that it is happening is killing the very heart of the competitive edge that makes America great. Methinks they...

In the wake of the excellent "30 days with Ubuntu" article, I was hoping for more of the same with OS X. Like most here I was surprised and disappointed by what I actually read. Dear H|OCP. Please give a Mac to whoever did the "Ubuntu" article and tell him to report back in another month...

Google Responds To Billion Dollar Lawsuit

This seems ridiculous. I have been waiting some time to see Google get sued, because it has what all the warez sites do not have -> Billions with which to fight a lawsuit. Basically I'm disgusted. It seems the law in America has little to do with who is right and more to do with how much...

    30 days with Linux @ [H] Consumer

You're not crazy if you like lipstick on pigs! I like that idea too. I can't code my way out of a paper bag, but I find the ideas endlessly fascinating. I think momentum is the problem. Linux has momentum, and as far is I know is the only non-Windows OS to have it. Could that momentum be...

Looking for an old-school text game.

Those may all be great games, but they're not the one I'm looking for. :) I think you picked a flower in it. It was quite short (like 20 minutes or so).

Very very strange speaker prob, I dont know if anybody can help

Sounds to me like a bad plug. My guess is a wire has come loose and your speakers think the headphones are plugged in even when they are not. It could be fixed, but (depending on what your speakers are like) an RMA may be easier.

Looking for an old-school text game.

Hopefully someone can help me out here. I remember playing a text-based game circa 1997 that was given as an example of how much like art a text based game could be, and that graphics didn't necessarily make a game beautiful. I vaguely recall that I played it Win95, it took place on a black...

    Ajump Prive AM2A64 @ [H] Consumer

Thanks for your reply, Josh. I certainly won't argue with the last half of the quote above. The review certainly sounded like it wasn't a pleasurable experience, wiring or no wiring. But I couldn't disagree more about the first bit of the quote. The company's level of service is ONLY...

    Ajump Prive AM2A64 @ [H] Consumer

In some sense, I think Ajump is not given a fare shake in this review. True, they didn't route the cables nicely, but then they didn't charge what Voodoo charges either. You can't compare the computer you get for cheap with the computer you pay a huge premium for. You get what you pay for...

    Removing GNU GRUB from mbr

This very problem has happened to me twice and made me hate linux, although I realize GRUB is not linux. Seems you can't get the one without t'other. Unfortunately, about every 6 months I forget how poorly it went last time and try again. I never learn.

    Best Linux Distro

I absolutely love the IDEA of linux, and would love to use it. However, I have played around with Linux several times in the past and have always ended up frustrated and swearing, often losing data. Can someone recommend a good place to go to learn beginner stuff about linux so that a guy...

Planning on buying iPod. Need advice about warranties.

Greetings everyone. I'm planning on buying an iPod Video 30GB, and I'm not sure what the best way to go about it is. A friend advised me to get the 3 year extended warranty from FutureShop here in Canada, because theoretically the battery could be replaced several times in that 3 years. But...

    Death to the Game Industry

The internet is killing publishers in every genre. It's not just computer games, but authors and musicians and film makers as well are realizing that we no longer need a gate keeper to decide who gets to experience what. And it's about time too. The interesting thing is that the publishers...

    Video Games Blamed For Shootings

That's only partly true. Canada has dramatically less violent crime per capita than America. It is a safer place to live. Canada sees itself as part of the world, where we are but one co-equal part of the whole, and where we think working with people is the best way for us all to be happy...

    Improving 3DMark

I think the answer is where does Futuremark's money come from? ATI and nVidia pay them money so that their cards look better. If futuremark were to drop them (which they would have to do to be relevant) how would they make money? By paying to license engines? Not bloody likely. By charging...

Does my Chaintech VNF3-250 need a BIOS update?

How do I know if my board needs an update? MBM5 is currently reporting CPU temp as -68! lol. Also, how do I do a BIOS update without a disk drive? Thanks in advance.
