For me, it'd be:
1)D3
2)Far Cry
3)HL2 (close)
I loved D3. Best gfx IMO of the three with a surprisingly efficient engine. I rarely had any noticable fps dips in game, unlike Far Cry and HL2 at similar settings. Also seemed to have the best atmosphere of the three... I jumped out of my...
At 648x480 or 800x600 a 6800nu would be one hell of an investment... at a res that low you'll be getting great fps without cutting back on the eyecandy (AA/AF/effects) in most games coming down the pike. You'll probably be able to get away with keeping that card for several years without...
I can't think of any "apples to apples" comparisons for the 8 pipe LE and a 6600GT off the top of my head, but seeing as they have the same architechture, being NV4Xs, and the same # of pipes, the 6600GT should theoretically be the faster card. In most reviews the 6600GT is able to keep up with...
Would that actually be faster than 2x6600GTs? Maybe I read that review wrong but it looked like this new 256MB 6800 was barely ahead in a few tests and waaay behind in others (like the far cry bench).
...read the first 3 pages or so, skimmed the rest, so if my question has already been asked/answered.... oops.
Anyway would switching to partial fp (fp16 default and only going to 32 when needed) give performance boosts on 6800 cards too? My softmodded GTO has rocked it pretty well so far...
I remember hearing some rumors that it might hit PC like 1/2 a year after the xbox release, but I haven't seen anything about it since :( ...
Anybody heard anything?
Hmm interesting. How about character customizations? Is it very common to run into ppl using the same exact models or is there enough variety to make sure no 2 ppl look exactly the same?
After Ice's post I'm actually considering this (should prolly finish with hl2 first though). Sux that...
Most new GTOs randomly stopped unlocking towards the end of october. Seems that Dell/nVidia started physically disabling the extra pipes/shader after word spread about riva-tuner mod... meaning softmodding is a no-go, sorry. Then again there always is soldering :p
Since you started a thread, I might as well piggyback with my own questions :p
In addition to what Hurley asked, I'm curious about how well PvP is implemented in each game? Are the classes well balanced?
I think I read some story on here about a paladin stomping a warrior in melee in...
I'm hoping they "leak" a new beta set or, better yet, officially release one with HL2 opts. The 67.02s are good, but I still get occasional stuttering a few seconds after load points and some big fps dips in water levels (with v-sync on) :(
I've only had it for about a day but so far I'm really liking it!
The gfx are easily on par with D3 IMO. But the occasional stuttering, and the mid level load-points are kind of a downer... seems like whenever I really start to get into the swing of things I hit a load point, which abruptly...
Ok, I just shelled out the $59.99 online for the silver package... start downloading hl2, and finally when it says it's ready I click play and the game freezes! Not stuttering or hiccups but a total lock-up that's forced me to manually reboot 3 times now :(
It shows valve logo (dude with the...
Woah, that new 256MB PCI-E 6800 is more of a freak of nature than the original GTO :p
According to the Dell website it has 256MB DDR1 (wtf  ) at 600MHz (effective) and a 325MHz core... I would think a 6600GT would pwn this thing, badly. But I guess for bargain shoppers, the price...
Apparently he has enough expendable income to not worry about buying smart :p
Fallguy,
How well does your GT handle HL2 at 1280x1024? I'm curious cause that's my 17" screen's max res, and I'm hoping to be able to play get playable fps with 4xAA/8xAF (card set to "Quality") using the rig in...
Most interesting things I see listed there are the x800 vanilla and the XL. Guess they'll finally have something to compete directly for the 6800nu's market share. Those x850s don't look like they'll be powerful enough to do anything a current XTPE or XT can't.
Wow, nice find on the sub $600 XTPE.
But if you're planning on going SLI in a couple of months anyway why not just spring for a PCI-E Ultra now, (some ppl at nvnews.net already got their's) ? Similar price and performance in current games, and then in a few months when the 6900(?)...
Nice! The 6600GT is an impressive piece of hardware, I almost waited to get one of those myself...
The Anandtech HL2 benches ( http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2278&p=13 ) have it performing on equal terms with the 6800nu under almost any conditions! And at ~$200, Looks like...
That anandtech comparison is very interesting. The Xbit labs benches had me kinda worried (haven't got hl2 yet myself, but they made it look pretty rough on a GT at 1280x1024 w/AA & AF). Thx :)
Is it? Aside from the [H] benches I've seen it looks like a runaway for the x800Pro. Mind linking me to the benches you're referencing? (not being sarcastic, actually curious) :)
That ripple effect you're talking about sounds like image tearing... caused by a disjunction between the fps of the game and your screen refresh rate (happens a lot on LCDs). Turn on Vsync and it should go away.
edit: damn, beat to the punch :p
I had a blast playing D3. Went "Mesh style" and ran it in the dark, alone, with the 5.1 surround blazzing. It was way better than I thought it would be from all the, IMO underrated, reviews it got.
I actually got a lot more bored with Far Cry. It's gfx didn't look nearly as impressive...
There was a thread at the nvnews.net forums about eq2 performance on the 6800s. I can't find it off hand but there was a vid cap of it running on an Ultra with maxed settings getting really low fps...
Unless there are some more hidden optimizations the Forceware crew can whip out, you'll...
Depends on what you want to play. Overall the 6600GT is, IMO, your best bet... but the x700Pro has stomped all over it and even the 6800nu in some of the recent HL2 benchmarks . Either one of those should be good. But don't go for the x600xt! It's no where near as powerful as the x700s...
