Make sure the VGA cable is pushed in correctly or use another one like everyone else says. You see the VGA has RGB outputs and if one of those outputs isn't connected properly you will get funky colors.

No gradient problems on the DVI connection? What revision is your monitor? A00? I find it hard to believe that you don't have any color banding issues, since everyone seems to be having them. Plasma Pong looks terrible in DVI imo, the banding is very noticable.
