Extending sata cable out of ps3 to a large external 2tb 3.5"
Anyone here place their ps3 os and data on a large external 3.5" drive? How did you go about powering the drive? What's the best way to power the drive such that it powers on when powering on the ps3?

Why would you go the long road when PS3 works flawlessly with any FAT32 external USB HDD? It's even better because you can create and manage all the folders trough Windows...
I got 750GB My Book next to mine and it works just freaking fine! Even powers up with PS3 when i set it to, for example when i watch some movies on the go, PSP + Remote Play FTW!!! woot! ![]()

You can use a cable like this to hook up the external sata drive and power it using the internal power. http://industrialcomponent.com/oem/sataext12.html You could then buy this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817182179, put your hard drive inside it and just leave the back off, or mod it. That way it's protected at least from the front and will set up and look nice. The PS3 will think the drive is inside because your simply extending it out, using the existing connectors. I don't know what the maximum volume size the PS3 can format fat32 to. Windows is 32GB so if the PS3 can't format 750GB, use a program like this http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...32format.shtml to format the drive. ![]() And what 750GB drive has to do with formatting? I just said i have a 750GB my book drive next to my PS3. All of the WD drives are in fat32 anyway. ![]() There is no need going the long road, better to have as External. Unless you have a 20GB drive in your PS3 or 40. Other than that you are NOT going to fill up any of the PS3's drives fully with games. (unless you are super hardcore gamer that wants to own all PS3 games on PSN) But if you want to have every freaking movie on your PS3 under a list, or dumb A-Z category be my guest. Making folders yourself is much better compared what PS3 got.

bigdogchris, thanks for the links. I will try that extension cable.
The reasoning I have with using a sata directly connected to the ps3 is it will allow for faster seeking through 1080p x264 movies. My experience shows usb prevents responsive scanning when playing large movie files. Is my recollection correct in that the ps3 os and data hd uses a proprietary file system? Or would I be able to connect the drive to a computer after the ps3 formats it and still be able to copy music etc to it and reconnect the drive to the ps3 being able to play the music etc? If I did go the external usb route I would prefer that the drive power on through the ps3 usb power. I wonder if a wd20eads 2tb green wd could be powered through usb. If anyone has tested this let me know.

All My Books powers on trough USB but you can shut it off manually resulting in manual power ON. If you have a proper enclosure it will work just fine too.
Curious what kind of format you using to watch 1080p movies... Out of my experience i did not encounter any kind of stuttering trough USB though...

Can seek just fine through the movie, and everything loads right up with no delay. Maybe something else is going on....

Stuttering is not the best descriptor. x264 high bitrate encodings require substantially more processor intensive decoding than ie wmv files. Fast forwarding or loading thumbnails when having pressed the square button are less fluid and slower. 30x or 120x fast forwarding is much less responsive than say 1.5x in terms of fps.
I believe it is a matter of the ps3 not having enough bandwidth to process the source file. Faster access hard drives and a sata connection makes fast forwarding videos much more responsive in frame displayed per seconds than a usb connection.

Because what he was suggesting he wants 1 drive with content plus install his OS on it. If he wants to go that route he wants to go that route. Just because a USB hard drive works for what you want doesn't mean he wants that. Maybe he doesn't want the hassle of having 2 hard drives and managing content between them? You sir, are the genius

FWIW the PS3 does not utilize the FAT32 file system for the internal 2.5 hard drive. It can read off of external USB devices and what not. Although, unlike FAT32, you have the option of storing single files exceeding 4GB on the PS3's internal hard drive.

OP I would also read this. Talking about losing the ability to format after you pull a drive. http://www.driverheaven.net/gaming-d...ot-format.html It says you should download the firmware and keep it on a seperate USB drive and then after you hook up the new hard drive to the PS3, boot it up and it will pull the firmware data from the USB drive, format the internal drive, then you are good to go. Not trying to thread hijack, but I've got like 150 gig's of porn
and several mybooks, so can I just plug a Mybook into the PS3 and the PS3 will play them no problem through the xmb?Their AVI. and WMV.

How are you guys getting 1080p x264 movies onto a FAT32 hdd? Isn't fat32 restricted to files under 4gb? I wired my network up with gigabit and use PS3 media server to stream all my mkv's now.
