AGP Card capable of HD?
I need a new AGP card for my HTPC. I am currently using a 6800 I had used in my main rig a few years ago. The only problem is it is not likely the 1776x996 resolution my Sony Projection TV requires to use all the retail space. At least I am assuming that is the issue why the desktop never updates and I get staggering windows when moving them around.
I was hoping to purchase a cheap HD card to through in, I am running this one via DVI, as the TV doesn't have HDMI, but is HD capable. Any ideas on a card that would work, I am not wanting to spend much.

Just put a gigabyte HD 4650 into a HTPC I built for a buddy of mine. It's got VGA, DVI, and HDMI outputs and has been working for his needs extremely well.

Slow GUI performance is generally caused by drivers either not being installed or not being installed properly in my experience. I suggest you try reinstalling the drivers or test out a few different driver versions before you go ahead and purchase an entirely new video card.

Regardless of the driver issues the 6xxx series has no HD decoding abilities. You'd be better off in the long run with the HD4650 posted above. If you remain on the 6XXX you will be using your CPU for all HD decoding. You'd need to jump above the 8800GTS level to get HD decoding on your GPU nvidia wise. The 4650 really is your best bet. I'd be willing to bet your getting lag as your CPU is being tied up decoding any HD content your playing.

I'd strongly consider jumping off the AGP platform at this point. For $80 you could get a new mobo and CPU that would easily do HD with the integrated video.

HD 3650, HD 4650... but AGP... well... it's your choice^^

I should probably clarify I am not attempting to play HD content, just an HD resolution.
I will attempt to re-install the drivers and see if that clears it up. My specs are: AMD Athlon 64 - 3500+ 2.2GHz; 2GB RAM

Someone flame me if I'm wrong here, but I recall when the 6 series was first released there were reported compatibility issues between it and some wide aspect ratios LCD when connected through a DVI connection. I would either try to get the card you have now working with that PC or simply upgrade through an intergrated solution unless you find a decent AGP card on the used market.

Thanks, I will give all these ideas a shot, on a side note, my TV isn't an LCD, its old school (2002) projection. But I'm assuming the DVI communications would be the same.

Actually you could probably keep the 6800 then and use something like Powerstrip or maybe nVidia's own custom resolution tool.

umm just hd resolution ? so 1920 1080 ? any 6800 will run that i ran that on a 6800gt for awhile.
also using a 6600 agp in my media cetner right now has no issues with HD content

Its more like 1700x900 or something like that. I re-downloaded and installed the latest Nvidia drivers, that helped some, but I am now getting some lagging/stuttering in my movies.
I am running XP Pro, and Media Portal. I am wondering what all I can uninstall to make it less cumbersome during playback. Oh and I am using Powerstrip to get to that resolution. It just seems to lag a lot when moving between sections of mediaportal.

hmm maybe try a new player... I had to use GOM and select a couple options to make some high rate BSG episodes run smoothly awhile back GOM player made it happen where others couldnt.

Try
KMPlayer (you can use media player classic's plugins to offload decoding to GPU) or try Media player classic.

I am beginning to conclude that my issue might be that I'm using PATA instead of an SATA drive.

Or possibly a Codec, but I dont know anything about Codecs; which means its most likely a codec issue, lol. I simply installed windows xp, all teh drivers, and the mediaportal software...and went from there.
