HITACHI Deskstar HD31000 1TB

I've been thinking of getting this HD, but I can't find much on it. I wanted to know if it's a good deal for $70 (I know for 1TB it is, but wasn't sure about the quality). The retail package is a plus for me since it'll have a lesser chance of being doa. I don't have a preference for retail or oem packaging and I'm open to other brands.

my 500gb hitachi gets fairly warm/hot compared to my other 1gb/640gb drives...not sure if it's the same series drive, but just a heads-up

Be VERY careful with deskstars. A quick search online will show you that they are called DEATHstars. My 750GB is not working properly right now and it is only 10 months old. The packaging was good from newegg. Personally, I will not be experimenting with my data like this again. I'd rather spend extra 20-30 bucks and get the reliable brands like WD or Seagate. Add to that Hitachi has a bad warranty process and no advance exchange. Check out my other thread - I am going through a lot of issues right now. If I do get a replacement through the warranty, I will be selling that HD since I am getting the WD Green: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136317. $85

The DeathStar moniker is ancient and was associated with IBM's DeskStars, NOT Hitachi's DeskStars ...

Ancient cognomen or not, I have seen recent polls in several hard drive forums where in terms of reliability the top drives are WD and Seagate. Everything else is far behind. My experience is N=1, so it doesn't mean much, but in years of building computers for others and myself I have not experienced any problems with any hard drives. I was very hesitant buying the Hitachi, but I am open minded so I said how can I know if it is really bad if I don't even try? Well, now I know. Of course, not everyone's Hitachi fails. So you always have the option to buy one and see if you're one of the unlucky ones. Can a WD fail too? Sure. But given proper shipment packaging, I think it's obvious that WD will have a lower probability to fail. It also doesn't help that Hitachi makes their warranty claim process a pain in the ass.

You should look again because it was the Seagate drives that were in the news recently for huge amount of failures due to firmware problems.

Holy crap: let me solve you your problem: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...054&CatId=2459

!!! $69.99 for a WD 1TB GREEN Drive. It doesn't get any better than this right now. I am getting it.

Add to that: No tax if you're from CA (it's like 10% now and ZZF and newegg both charge us) and free shipping if you get something else to make the order over $100. This is a great deal.
