Damn, at $410 too. The 58xx series has been a very interesting study on supply vs. demand .

I don't get it. ATI needs to get the price down fast, unless they want to repeat Nvidia's mistakes. The 4000 and 5000 generation of ATI video cards are great, but a 4870 wasn't nearly this expensive.

The 4870 came out as an underdog card, from the get-go.

It was priced to compete, price/performance, against a GTX260 (when it launched with the gtx280), so it had to be at 299.

Now at the 5000 series, any nVidia card with similar performance is priced way over the comparible card.

So...

ATi has kept the prices way down, compared to the nVidia side of the aisle.

Wrong. First, there's no ATI, it's AMD. Second, AMD does not dictate retail prices, only MSRP (remember - keyword is 'recommended'). Third, AMD has to get volume up, THEN the prices will go down.

and in order for AMD to get volume up TSMC needs to get its act together

"The biggest problem with PhysX is this: the PC is, and always has been, the open gaming platform. The entire point of PC gaming is that it can be changed and it can evolve in real-time as hardware evolves. PhysX, by its very nature as a proprietary technology, flies in the face of that openness. PC gaming is supposed to be democratic, not authoritarian." -- Mark [H]ardOCP Reviewer.

As long as these cards keep selling out the instant they're available, everyone can keep charging more.

No need to be a dickhole with the person over the AMD/ATI naming thing. Secondly, there technically *is* an ATI, in brand name, not company name.
