Pretty much as entry level, bottom of the barrel you can get.

But it'll be miles ahead of a P&S.

I have to admit, Im interested in this for my GF for x-mas. She's been wanting a DSLR for the past 6 months or so.

Is this even a good value? What does this camera normally retail for?

I would hate to miss out on a good deal, but I also want to make sure I'm getting what she wants, and I don't know a thing about cameras really.

*EDIT* - This is the exact camera she was looking at

How is this a better deal? I'm pretty sure all 50 states have to pay tax as well!

The D3000 is basically the new D40, except the D40 is 6.1 MP. I've had the D40 for a few years now and love it. I got the D40 with both lenses for about $550 then, so this is a pretty good deal.

The link changed it was the D3000 for $499 with a camera bag and DVD. It would be a little cheaper with a camera bag as well (In some states I guess depending on how much tax you had to pay) but the deals gone anyway now.

If you're getting into dslr's, look for cam's that have auto-bracket feature.

Put a good lens on it in the hands of a professional and it will produce results as good as any high end SLR in most cases.

The Rebel has more actual features and more autofocus points, but it also costs more, I believe. Ultimately, you need to try both to see which you like and what your budget is for lenses.

Search for HDR pics on the internet.

it does it automatic for you. for d40 like mines, i'll have to tripod it, and change the exp myself.

I'm a noob, so I'd rather get auto-bracket do it for me, quick and simple.

Yes, but to a more serious photographer, live view is not needed or wanted. I would never have use for live view myself.

It doesn't display a live view on the camera LCD you have to use the viewfinder (little window you put you're eye up to)
