Bare minimum for 1920x1080?

We got a Samsung 61" 1080p television and I was wondering what the bear minimum in terms of graphics card was for 1920x1080 with a decent FPS that wont studder. I know this is a vague question but bear with me.

Currently, our HTPC will be an AthlonXP 2500+ with a gig of ram. I will probably play games such as Call of Duty 2, Civ 4, etc. And definately not on full AA/AF. Could say, a 9600XT support this? Or do I need to look into PCI-Express graphic cards (than bumping my system to a A64 3000+, an option I kind of don't want to take)?

As for the bare minimum I'd say what you already answered with :)

yeh bear minimum would be a 7800gt/gtx and above...but hed have to upgrade to pci-e for that :(

If you want to play COD2, I would recommend at least a 7800GT.

damn you're good.

yeah, i'm looking at the x850 atm...i found one by sapphire for 219...how are 6800GT's?

I really have to decide, I guess, whether going A64 would be worth it.

Well a bear might destroy everything.

But, the bare minimum would probably have to be a 7800 of either flavor.

I vote for the 7800 also. It's not that much more than the x850xt or 6800gt anyway, plus it's a good bit more powerful.

The only thing you'll be doing at 1920x1080 with that 9600xt is playing movies/videos. It's ok for that, but even still I'd recommend a 6600gt. I use a 9600xt in my HTPC (for about another couple weeks anyway) and it has no problems playing video content at 1920x1080i...but forget about the games with it.

see the thing is, if i were to go with the 7800gt, I would have to get a new chip + mobo...decisions decisions...

hmmm...in that case, go for the x850xt then. It's still no slouch of a card, but if you're planning on playing the newer games that come out at that resolution, then I'd think it'd be struggling.

Of course, you could always game at 1280x720p. Like 90% of people out there can't see a difference between 1920x1080i and 1280x720p beyond a distance of 6-8ft anyway.

I would say go with a GTX, X1800XT or 2 7800 GT's at least. I run into some troubles playing cs:s at 1920x1200 with 2xSSAA and 8xAF on High Quality.

Do you sit 6-8ft from your monitor when you game ;)

The athlon 2500+ processor will be bottlenecking any of these video cards your talking about. I'm not saying you won't get nice frame rates but you'll be limited at least.

to quote the OP:

now...do you sit closer than 6ft away from your 61" TV? Most avid home theater people will most definately say a big NO to that one. The optimal distance to watch a TV that large is at LEAST 8ft. Go to your local Home Theater store (assuming there is a dedicated HT store where you're at) and ask the people that setup home theater systems if you find any doubt.

or head over to AVSForums.com.

remember he's on an AGP mobo right now guys!

The thing about s939 is that AM2 (new socket) is coming out in a few months. It probably will offer at least the same performance per dollar, otherwise it would just be silly to release it (imho). So wait until then if you can to upgrade everything. Check out some reviews and stuff once it does come out. It really is just around the corner.

now, this is just a shot in the dark, would SLI 6600GT's be able to run games at that resolution?

2 6600 gts = an oced 7800gt or a stock gtx so yeah but it's better and easier to get a 7800gt

6800 gs is also a great card..

yeah, i was just looking at that...

also, how would an x800xl fare? i just need the 1920x1080 resolution, aa/af aren't a big deal...

you can get an x800xt or x850xt for not much more than the x800xl anymore, so I'd go with one of those two. They're clocked around 100+ mhz faster than the xl, so they'll have the extra beef that may be needed.

I have an x800xl, and while it's a good card, I don't think I'd even attempt to run any newer games at 1920 on it. It'll handle 1600x1200 in a lot of games decently, but the newer ones like Fear, Rainbow Six Lockdown (which sucks ass IMO), etc, I can only max at 1280x1024.

althought...I finally ditched that pos stock cooler on it and got an ATI Silencer 5r2 and it dropped my temps from 70+c load, to a max of 42c. I also went from 420mhz core/1100ddr to 475mhz core/1170 ddr....and that's without volt mods. I may vmod it in the next week or so to see how much more I can squeeze.

:EDIT: btw, the x800xl is about equal to a 6800gt. Just depends on the games you play...just like any other ATI vs NV argument :p

No, at this point in time, I would not recommend anything less than a Geforce 7 Series or a Radeon X1000 Series card.

Btw, how did my post end up in front of the title post?
