So on a X2 4600+ gaming at 1680x1050 full details . . .

will an 8800GTS provide much improvement over 7900GT SLI?

Reason I ask is I have an option to move out of these cards and into an 8800GTS for pretty much even swap.

Haven't been able to find good benches yet that show me what I'm looking for.

Thanks.

I have a GTS and I never expiranced gaming like this... I game at 1680x1050 and its amazing

I had 2 7800GT's in SLI and my GTS kicks the crap out of them..
So yup I would trade in a heartbeat..run run

a GTS beats 2 7800GTX's... So, yeah, it'd be a bit better :).

Well, I ran across one benchmark that shows the FEAR benchmark for the 8800GTS and while it doesn't show 7900 GT SLI, it does let me see that it gets 58 in that benchmark where I know that my current setup will do 73.

There just seems to be a lot of back and forth in the reviews.

OC'ed 7900gt's in sli are roughly equivalent to a 8800gts. At least from these numbers, my setup OC'ed beats the gts in most. GTX however, rapes us :p

I've seen two replies now that mention 7800's.

These are 7900 GT's.
We know, but 7800's are just 5-7% slower so you can still compare the cards.. :p

So, performance wise, are 2 7900gt's in SLi roughly the equivelant to 2 7800gtx's in SLi ??? If so, then here are my numbers.. (ex owner of 2 7800gtx's):

Two 7900 GTs in SLI are roughly the same as two 7800 GTX 256 MB in SLI, in terms of performance. Just like a single 7950 GX2 is roughly the same as two 7900 GTs in SLI. So the comparison is valid.

Answering your initial question:

I would go with a GTS: A bit faster than two 7900 GTs in SLI and has much better Image Quality - angle independent Anisotropic Filtering, more AA modes, DX10 capable...the list goes on...
You really can't go wrong with a 8800 card. If you can't afford a GTX, GTS it is :)

Sounds like I will prob make the move over then. I wasn't sure what the exact 7900 to 7800 comparison was, but that all makes sense. Seems like I will see minor gains in DX9 but it will be future proof for DX10, plus all the image enhancements.

My main beef with the GTX is two-fold - first, of course, the $600 price-tag is sorta hard to swallow all at once even if it is only $150 more. Sure I could afford it, but I guess it's just a mental block for one card. $450 would be the most by far I'd spent on a single card and then only because I can justify it if it's worth two 7900 GT's. Second though is the sheer size of that beast. I'd have to do something extreme to fit it into my case - I have almost every drive bay filled in my case right now.

Right now, the 8800 GTS is the best card price / performance I beleive. At least you get the most bang for the buck.

Probably true unless you play at resolutions above 1600 x 1200 (1680 x 1050). If you are lucky enough to have a 24" or larger monitor, then the GTX makes much more sense.

Me, I'm getting myself a GTS for Christmas. :D

I love my GTS. As far as just a canned comparison goes, I'm getting 9597 in 3DM06. I have the card slightly overclocked, but nowhere near its limit. I believe I have it: Core 600 Mem 800 or something like that. As far as actual games go, I'm running every game I have at 1680x1050 with maximum detail settings, with a touch of AA, and a liberal sprinkling of AF. Absolutely nothing to complain about. I play all of my games with V-Sync forced, and really haven't noticed any significant drops.

I would love to get an 8800, but couple of other toys I want, so found used 7900GT KO on ebay for $180 for some SLI action. Maybe by Spring (or tax refund time) the 8800's will be in a better range. Now I have a better idea where my two cards sit in the hierarchy.

I'm pretty much doing that now with my 7900 GT SLI.

Don't play Oblivion much though.

Right now the only games I play are Counter Strike Source, DOD Source, Albatross Panyga golf, Guild Wars Factions, BF2

I play them all Maxed out, w/ 4x AA and 16x AF... @ 1680x1050.... 100% smooth
